  1. Yet you find the time to upgrade your secretary to a PA? Amazing Back on topic: The Moviegoer's Companion 8/10 It's one of these fact filled guides full of trivia, info, quotes and top 10s. Sample: 147 - The number of small firecrackers attached to James Caan's body to simulate his death in The Godfather. I may start boring everyone to death with trivia questions
  2. I am listening to The Rake's new one, Ten New Messages. Nothing new here which is no bad thing in my book. I'll give the Kings Of Leon's new stuff a listen tonight.
  3. Had that in my hand last week in Borders. I ultimately put it back because I had previously read a novel by AA Gill and for some reason I linked the two together. I hadn't really enjoyed it but I suppose it was 10 years ago - I should give it another go (as I will with Daveism, should you recommend it once finished). I have restarted London Fields by Martin Amis after losing track of it when I came back from holiday in the summer.
  4. I've watched a few, I'll be short and sweet: Casino Royale 7/10 - Encouraging, good to see another take on Bond (especially an inexperienced and reckless one), wasn't too convinced about the depth of the relationship. It did have some great set pieces though. Scary Movie 3 2/10 - Just plainly not funny. Not good for a comedy. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back 5/10 - Not as much of a mess as Dogma, 2 extra marks for Ali Larter and the Buffy burd in latex. The Astronaut's Wife - ??? Fell alseep, is there any other more definitive critique than that? Ferris Bueller's Day Off 8/10 - What can I say? Tremendous. It's got the laughs, the music, the human storyline, Oh Yeah by Yello and Ed Rooney "Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude."
  5. War? It's purely a tribute to 'A Girl'. I'm loving it at the moment and bizarrely enough quite like it as an avatar. I'm afraid it's here to stay for the meanwhile (until Mr Stainrod reappears) Don't mention 'he who can't be named' or Radford will shut down the thread quicker than you can say 'power hungry mod in hissy fit censorship scandal'
  6. Was that the uncut lesbo version? And to think there was a child on board as well. It's a disgrace
  7. The Year Punk Broke - 9/10 It's a Sonic Youth tour movie featuring plenty of them before Dirty really took off, just after Goo was released. As it is shot on a big tour across Europe including a bit of festival stuff there is a lot of Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr stuff on there as well. Not only is the concert stuff great but the various band members from all the groups come across as funny, articulate human beings. It must be fantastic and at the same time endlessly boring being on the road for months at a time. Superman 2 rocked by the way and is even better now that the directors cut thing has been released. Still in 3rd place behind Spidey and Batman though.
  8. It's Paddy Considine that steals the show every time he is on the screen for me. Best actor currently working in this country by 100 Broons.
  9. I take it this has finally been released? I've been waiting for this film for about a year. I watched The Departed - I'll give it 8/10 I was kind of underwhelmed by Jaaaaack but was astounded by how much I enjoyed Di Caprios' performance as I usually detest the runt. Looks like I may have to re-evaluate (ie ignore) his earlier work. Great film, loses a point because I've seen Infernal Affairs, loved Marky Mark's foul mouthed turn (another guy I usually hate)
  10. Juliana Hatfield - Made In China It's great!
  11. Napoleon Dynamite - 9/10 You are going to either love it or hate it. I loved it. "Yeah right. Who's the only one here who knows the illegal ninja moves from the government? "
  12. An African 10/10 is non-migratory. I'll make it a 10 with big, sharp pointy teeth! Is this the 'did she/didn't she - real sex' stuff that's been invented to promote the film?
  13. Last night I watched..... "What...is your name? What...is your quest? What.........is your favourite colour?" 9/10, maybe 10/10.
  14. If we're talking Japanese films, take in Audition, if you can stomach the end. A proper horror movie that doesn't conform to the usual lame standards.
  15. Paddy Considine is simply brilliant in this film. Control:The Ian Curtis Film is out later this year if anyone is interested. New Order are producing the soundtrack and will be re-recording a few Joy Division tracks as Joy Division for the film. Deborah Curtis and Tony Wilson are co-producing it and Anton Corbijn is directing so expect much black and whiteness, stark contrasts and grainy film.
  16. Best Movie Punch Ever (the Robin Hood scene) Love it! "How long have you been a robber?" "4 foot 1" "Jolly good!"
  17. The Meaning of Life - 6/10 Flashes of utter genius, some sub-standard Python stuff (Cleese looks like he can't be arsed sometimes). Some strange stuff in their as well (Fishy fishy ) Spirited Away - 9/10 Sublime, I hope it is never, ever remade into live action. Could be the best animated movie I have ever watched.
  18. It is indeed a difficult movie to watch in parts but worth it. I watched Blade Runner again last night, the Directors Cut. Harrison Ford should seriously reassess his views on it, a modern masterpiece. I don't think I can add anymore than what has already been said about this film. Quite beautiful, considerably tragic, in many ways a futuristic Frankenstein story. 9/10
  19. Young Frankenstein - 8/10 Gene Wilder does what Gene Wilder does best. Terri Garr - nice Gene Hackman - one of the great cameos Madeline Kahn - it wouldn't be Mel Brookes without her - barking mad as usual Special mentions however: Peter Boyle - One of the greatest monster performances of all time. "Puuuttin ona riiiiiii" It's Marty Feldman's movie though, bug-eyed brilliance! Best Igor ever.
  20. Home Alone - 9/10 Ye canny beat it! The Aristocrats - 7/10 I didn't find it as funny as I had been lead to believe but non the less there were a few renditions of the joke that had me in tears. It's a testament to the movie that my interest did not wane once watching different folks take on the same joke.
  21. The Hulk - 7/10 Much better the second time round. Crappy CGI dog fight apart it's a pretty good film. I was too tired to give it the attention it deserved the first time round and found myself baying for the big green guy (like most critics and fanboys). Jaws 2 - 7/10 Nowhere near as good as the original but thankfully not half as bad as the next 2 sequels. It does have a good couple of set pieces (the water skiing scene is pretty good). Jaws is probably the one film that I would not be too disappointed in seeing being "enhanced" digitally. The great thing about the original is that we do not see the shark much (I'm far from convinced this was through design given the problems they had with the shark). When we do see the shark it's pretty crappy looking though. I don't think that making it a bit more realistic looking would detract from the tension.
