Don't use the trains myself but heard a report on the BBC travel news that a train wasn't stopping at certain stations on its route due to the 'weather conditions'. WTF?

This is more likely to be that old trick where a late running train goes 'express' in order to make up time and get it to terminus before the TOC gets fined for being late. Hugely irritating when you rely on a smaller station to get you by.

Last night had a two carriage train at peak time southbound, then I was 20 minutes late getting in this morning. Standard.

And you too - can't argue with a PB. Are you still on for D33 this year?

Looking okay for it, though not getting as many miles as I'd like during the week.

Also fearful of injury - you know that if you push a bit too hard and pick up a bad 'un, you're rooked for ultra distances...

  3. Commute daily from Laurencekirk to Aibrrrdeen. Nightmares with overcrowding and late services are fairly regular part of my week, alas.

And fully agree with any posts about it getting worse under Abeillo, especially when they withdrew some of the season ticket benefits (free 1st class at weekends etc) and replaced it with bugger all.:angry:

Alan Mullally still gives me nightmares with his batting. I can remember him batting as high as 9 in tests when Tufnell was playing.

That'll have been the New Zealand series when England went bottom of the rankings. Irani, Caddick, Mullally, Tufnell, Giddins for a tail, so effectively six down = all out. It's on youtube somewhere IIRC....

Sounds painful, Scorge, but great efforts there. Quicker on the second run, too! How's the Hazlehead course? I did the beach at the end of November - that could be a really quick route if the wind's blowing the right way.

Cheers min. Looking to do Portobello when I'm down the road next month, what should I be expecting?

Hazlehead is a wee cracker in the forest: it's slightly uphill on the out loop, but then great fun coming back, and you can never see too far in front which I always approve of. It's a touch narrow, but easily my favourite.

The beach is a PB candidate in the summer, but today into the headwind on the way out it certainly wasn't....

  6. Managed to do the double this morning despite pulling the top of my back coming out of the shower. Oops.

29:30 for Hazlehead, then 28:36 for the beach. Happy enough, and felt very smug at the café seeing all the deviants with hangovers desperately fighting over the bacon and sausage rolls....

  7. Keeping next year's goals very simple: three big ones (D33, Mudder, Loch Ness Mara), probably a couple of halfs, and find a 5k and 10k PB in there somewhere.

Double Parkrun on New Year's Day in Aberdeen to kick things off.

Hope everyone runs well and stays injury free!

  8. Watching the NZ vs SL test, NZ have spunked both their reviews in the first 16 overs on marginal LBW calls. I still think captains don't quite know how to use these after the 5 / 6 years it's been in play. Also disagree with the idea that you shouldn't lose a review if it's umpire's call, you'd be getting about 10 reviews an innings.

Think the strategy that captains should be using is to keep one in the bank for the whole 80 overs in case there is a massive blunder, and use one on a marginal LBW punt (unless you're maybe 70/75 overs in and might just burn the second one anyway). If a team burns two up early and then gets undone by a stinker, then they have to take it on the chin, alas.....

Thanks for all the advice guys, a lot to take into consideration, especially about things like HRM's and Garmin's. I'm not sure how seriously I'll take running after London so I might leave it until then before I look at picking one up.

I'm thinking about going to the Parkruns as well, I think it'll be good to get used to running with other people.

    .

Welcome aboard, and good luck for London. Would deffo recommend a couple of 'big field' events if you can find ones that fit in with training, because as has been said there is a bit of a skill element involved in running in a big pack.

Did 16 miles here today after getting a bit carried away, biggest distance in five months. Tight knee aside, all well. One month hard in the gym on upper body before ultra training next.

  10. Main goal here is the D33 Ultra in March, TBH I've got a very busy year looming with college/work/etc and so will probably have to be really picky about races. Will probably be back at Loch Ness for redemption/vengeance too.

Did my first double digit run since GNR yesterday, 11 gentle miles to a friend's pub and back. All good and ready for winter cross training and the headtorch high vis season now....

  11. Well done Nessers. Was following a few people on soshulmeedja and was aching to have been there. I think I will be going for redemption next year.

London ballot results are out this week, getting impatient because my entire calendar for next year is kind of on hold until I've had the latest rejection magazine/jumped for joy at last (delete as applicable)

  12. Previewing the album on iTunes just now and I still cannot understand what the fuss is here. They're decent tunes but they're just so boring. And it sounds identical to the first album - great stuff if you're into it, not so good if you're looking for musical progression.

That's my two cents, and you're welcome to them.

Edited to add - this post is almost identical to the one I posted several weeks ago, and I apologise for the repetition.

Was a big fan of the first album but agree this one suffers from a lack of progression, it's much more pedestrian and there's far less really good quality tracks on it. Tried to write it too quickly maybe?

Will still give them another shot live, because I was impressed by how tight they were last time I saw them.

  13. ^^ good running Morrison. Wish I'd been in that good a nick by the time I'd got to the last 200m!

Start line atmosphere - incredible, ditto going over the bridge. Unforgettable scene.

Was running really well for 7 miles and the magical, elusive sub-2hrs looked do-ablee, but by then I'd began to burn myself out dodging traffic and at the 10 mile point where I should have been accelerating, I hit the wall. That mile (uphill and visible in full) is cruel, ditto the last stretch towards the finish, not even the (fantastic) support could keep me from having to walk some of it, bah. Clocked 2:11, but happy with how I approached it as if I want to bring that time down in future I'm going to have to risk attacking the distance rather than try and 'tortoise' it.

    Shattered.
