I think Scott is low on confidence and will be a different player after a pre season.

It just goes to show what an impact he's had, when I first started reading that I was thinking, "Wait.. but Tanser has been brilliant this season", until I realised it was a different Scott!

How many games has (James) Scott had for us? I remember 3 appearances at the start but I don't think he's gotten on since, has he?

Like @djchapsticks it would be folly to mock a Robinson signing. He's had so few failures, even Olusanya who looked rotten with us, then with Arbroath has turned into a very useful player. What's more, I got my fingers burnt with Hemming. His previous season was an utter disaster, both playing, injury and personal issues. It looked a mental decision to put him in at #1, although forced somewhat by Carson's actions. Just before the split, and it's fair to say Hemming has surpassed most people's expectation, certainly mine. So, yeah... maybe Robinson knows more about football than I do..! ;)

Regarding PCAs, we would regularly bemoan under different managers that we were always on the cusp of changing league, either Championship up or Premiership down, thus meaning we couldn't be proactive with recruitment. The only question that is really up in the air now is the European place (yes, top 6 is still to be confirmed but I feel we'll get over that line), so I feel we are in a much better position than before when it comes to attracting players.

The Spittal thing, if there ever was anything other than "we'll take you if you are willing to come", is just a bigger team with a higher wage budget coming in for him. It helped his case by going on quite a purple patch too. Can't really complain about that.

Even jokingly, il accept no shared ownership of that toxic waste

I get it, I really do, but the "OF problem" is a mix of imported terrorism and localised religious bigotry. It's a problem made in Scotland though, that combination is "our fault", and it's also "our fault" that we've allowed it to get so ingrained without direct fight back from all sides of society.

It's going to be interesting seeing if the new 'inciting hate' law comes into play with the next OF. Sky (or whoever covers it) will have their instructions from London, so probably won't be aware of the law coming into effect, especially as it's a devolved power, and I know they sometimes turn down the mics when there is sectarian chanting, but they can't turn the sound off for 90+ minutes. What's more, depending on how you interpret the law, you could.. albeit it's a tough ask.. make the claim that if religious hatred is broadcast, then Sky would be responsible for choosing to broadcast such content just as much as those who are professing such hate.

  3. So is this how it's going to go?

    https://www.thenational.scot/sport/24232889.warnock-believes-aberdeen-must-sign-proven-spfl-players-summer/

Warnock has now morphed from a sad old angry boomer who can't manage a team into some sort of media soothsayer.

Edit: also, considering his political views, why.. the actual f**k.. is the National, of all papers, promoting anything the hateful buffoon says?

Weirdly he looked like he'd be an attacking full back who had to sharpen up defensively when he joined, but now it's the opposite. You can trust him but he needs to do more going forward.

Interesting.. it's almost the reverse with Strain, and that probably answers my question on the call up. I guess the Aussie manager prefers defensive full backs who can attack, than attacking wingbacks who can defend.

    2) My preferred option, both ugly sisters are jettisoned from the league with zero regard given to their future options.

I'm sure if it was to a league where they'd earn more money, they'd be happy with that.

I'm split on the OF leaving, they are ours after all, "you don't dump your rubbish in your neighbours garden". I also feel that if the OF were to go, they'd force some bullshit where the SFA still put them forward for Europe despite no longer playing in the SFA jurisdiction.

  6. IMO.. it's a real double edged sword, and I am sure someone will have mentioned this already, but if you are small-ish team and you have a sugar daddy put money into the club, it's going to trigger fair play rules. With clubs like Rangers and Celtic they can put that money in knowing their revenue covers that and while it's not enough to trigger fair play it will be more than enough to create a huge gap between the OF and every other team.

Have fair play and you can't have large investments in small clubs, remove fair play and you just increase the gap between the "haves" and "not haves".

  7. Not read all the replies but in terms of St Mirren the classic must be either Hammarby in Europe or against Rangers in the cup. Both of those were really tough to take.

What I would say is that there is a flip side to this, where we do tend to pull out a result when we need it. Either the Motherwell 3-2 game or Hearts 1-0 games to avoid relegation springs to mind, or as just about any Saints fans remember, that crazy result that kept us in the Championship, can't remember off the top of my head who that was against, but I think either Stirling Albion or Arbroath. If we lost that game we'd have been relegated to the 3rd tier of Scottish football for the first time.

Beni likely out with illness and Nieuwenhof still out. Devlin and Tait in the middle is pretty lightweight if that's what we go with.

How is Atkinson getting on? He's one for the future, I get that, but I am surprised that Australia called him up but not Strain (both playing RB). This isn't because Strain is with us, and Atkinson is with you, but (admittedly, while fit) Strain was showing far more than Atkinson.

In all seriousness, if the airport is able to operate then I'd imagine from a safety aspect it'll be fine for the game to be on. I guess the issue then is whether or not the wind is bad enough to turn things into a farce.

Planes can operate with reliability at considerably higher winds than a small inflatable bit of plastic.. ;)

    He really doesn't understand.

Neither do you it seems. I pointed out that Hearts fans would relish beating us, because they would. Why Vincent wished to argue that point is beyond me as all the evidence shows that to be the case. To then flounce off claiming I was the one arguing the point, is laughable, especially as it came in response to him claiming such notions are out of date and no longer relevant, despite the post being from 2020.

The short answer is if you dislike me posting then don't encourage it by arguing with me about a point that is obvious.

Reminiscent of Nelms & Keyes with us.

Got to say, I know nothing of Keyes. I appreciate this is an Aberdeen thread, but which of your managers did he recommend/appoint?

There was some nonsense when Nelms was love bombing Jack Ross but it obviously came to nothing, was that Keyes too?

In terms of recent appointments, you have to be really happy with Docherty. So whoever scouted/recommended/approached should get the credit for that, unless perhaps Docherty actively applied for the job and he more or less fell into Dundee's lap.

This season's outstayed its welcome by a few months already

Burrows must look a bright light at this moment.

He got a lot of good press while at Motherwell, and he comes across as a fairly even minded guy in the media.

Considering the mess Cormack has gotten into with bad appointment after bad appointment (you could argue Glass, Goodwin and Robson were worth the gamble, I suppose), the idea that he has someone who seems to genuinely understand how to approach and appoint a manager must be a positive.

I read that as him admitting he was doing a bad job (or at least not agood one) and saying that's why he resigned. He seemed a dickhead and a mediocre coach, but i thought that was a fair comment. I have been wrong before.

The story was in the Daily Mail, which is totally on brand for Warnock considering his political leanings <_<, but it was behind a firewall so I didn't see the whole story, just the first paragraph.

I think it's now at a Simpson's meme stage, "stop it... he's already dead" when it comes to Aberdeen just now. You are pretty unlikely to get dragged into the relegation zone, albeit how funny that might end up being ;), and you are not making the top 6. You are going to be left in no-man's land with dead rubber games, leaving all the talk to centre on the manager and Cormack.

As an Aberdeen fan I'd be wanting this season over as soon as possible.

  13. I grew up seeing us in the top 6 regularly. In fact, it was expected, so you can imagine the 20 odd years we yo-yo'd between the bottom of the premier and the championship was a bit of a wake up call. I understand why people are nervous about the top 6, and that includes players and staff - even if they don't admit it, but there shouldn't be this imaginary bar we need to jump. This side is more than capable of maintaining our top 6 standing and in Robinson we have a manager who not only managed it last season, but has a history with other Scottish teams getting to that position.

I wouldn't be against games being off for wind as it ruins it as a spectacle,  however I can't remember a game ever being called off for high winds.

Totally agree, I really hate seeing games played in high wind, especially if it is swirling. Most things you can mitigate. Bad pitch, rain or snow, or even limited visibility with fog, but high wind is the worst.

As for games cancelled, wasn't the Celtic/Caley Thistle cup game not cancelled for that? I think part of the stadium came down. Some years back though.

Look, we get it. You lived in Edinburgh, some Hearts fans were nasty to you.

    Fine.

But you honestly make every St Mirren - Hearts thread a total snoozefest.

Nobody can be fucked arguing with you. Nobody is getting all worked up. You're just really, really boring.

I won't be replying to you again on the topic. Hopefully we can salvage a match thread here.

Talking about 86 again will be really interesting and full of lots of new things to say.

As someone who was approaching my second birthday at the time, it's very relevant to me.

How old were you when your tannoy announcer (or whoever it was) went on their salty, tear-stained, rant?

This. I don't really dislike St Mirren all that much...

I don't have any great animus towards Hearts either.

Yet living in Edinburgh for about 5 years it was clear to me that St Mirren lives rent free in many Hearts fans minds.

Pretty sure the primary reason Hearts fans will want their team to win is that, erm, they want their team to win because they always want the team they support to win.

"Wanting your team to win", and, "holding a grudge against another team for your own teams' failings" are two different things, they aren't mutually exclusive though.

  18. Hearts are absolutely there for the taking...

    ..as are we, though!

I'm sure the club won't put too much stock in this, but the opportunity to "repay us" for relegating them while stopping us hitting top 6, with the chance that Hibs replace us thus giving them a derby before the end of the season, must get the Hearts fans moist. Even if there is only a slim chance of that happening.
