Just noticed that Buckie Thistle drew Linfield in the Challenge Cup. I know it’s considered a diddy cup at these early stages but that’s a bit of a glamour tie for Buckie. Would be hilarious if they beat Linfield but I suspect Linfield would progress with relative ease.

A team in green and white hoops playing Linfield. What could possibly go wrong?

    What exactly is the ambition?

Broomhill and Cowdenbeath would have started the season with the exact same ambition of getting promoted to the SPFL.

All of the Cowden fans I've read on here were very realistic about their prospects at the start of the season. Promotion would have been wishful thinking, not ambition.

    Absolute diddies.

"There is a suggestion the home players could stand and sing an acapella version of God Save the King with the backing of tens of thousands of fans,"

If they do, the ref should issue yellow cards to the whole team. Including the subs. Ungentlemanly conduct.

Something bothering me, why don’t they just rename the preliminary round as the first round, and renumber the rest to include a 6th round before the quarters, like they do in England?

    Seems sensible to me….

The FA Cup has six preliminary rounds, so their QF (round 6) is actually the 12th round.

My point is that, outwith these three, yellow is evidently *much* more commonly used than any other colour. Thus, it's a Scotland colour.

But only since the practice of selling replica shirts to gullible fans at inflated prices began, and thus required regular changes of design. Not something to be encouraged. White served well for decades. End of rant.

I literally said all of that in my post.

Green is one of our colours too as that's on the badge and we can have salmon pink sleeves on the home kit as we have that as an away colour too.

So far then, we have blue, white, red, green, yellow and pink. Oh, and don't forget maroon. Have I missed any?

Is anyone seriously saying those are all "our" colours? Stop this nonsense - it's navy blue and white.

Aye you did mention the manufacturer thing - sorry, I misread your post.

The point about salmon pink though falls rather flat as it has never been near a home kit in any shape or form. It was also a novel away kit, once.

Yellow *is* in the crest, *has* been on the home kit more than once and has been our away kit colour of choice no less than 9 times, as well as being our GK colour 12 times (14 if you count the kaleidoscopic nightmares of the 1996 goalie tops).

It's for that reason that I'm not particularly flabbergasted about the yellow flashes in the new kit. It's an interesting change, but it's not a radical new colour for us.

Scotland 'home' jerseys were pink and yellow between 1899-1901 and 1905-8.

Scotlands home kit had yellow on the collar 94-96  and at no other point in our history.

The closest was the bits of gold in the mid 2000s.

There was occasionally manufacturers' logos in yellow as a counterbalance to the yellow in the badge but only that one other instance as part of the design of the jersey.

There was also the primrose yellow and pink "Roseberry" jerseys worn around 1900.

    Opening league fixtures

    20 August 2022 - North Caledonian League

    2pm unless stated

    (Last season's positions in brackets)

    Alness (10) v Invergordon (1)
Fort William (Rel.) v Golspie Sutherland (4)
    (1pm) Loch Ness (2) v Orkney (6)
    St. Duthus (5) v Halkirk Utd (3)
    Nairn County 'A' ( 8 ) v Thurso (7)
    Inverness (9) v Clach reserves (-)

(Bonar Bridge (11) are the idle team on the opening day)

    ----------------------------------------------------------

So maybe, the game of the day is Fort William v Golspie Sutherland? Also the only two teams currently with a SFA license and therefore eligible for promotion if they win the league (and any required play-off). How will The Fort adapt to their new 'surroundings'?

Loch Ness v Orkney, who also have the honour of kicking off the league season, & St. Duthus v Halkirk Utd might also be interesting.

By 'new surroundings' do you mean Claggan Park, where they haven't played in living memory?

    Lesmahagow 3 Bellshill Athletic 1

Good game in the blistering heat. Good to see Kris Jarvie back at Craighead, as the Hill no 9.

End to end stuff with the Gow finishing better

23 is not "blistering heat', albeit possibly unusual for Lesmahagow.. 33 here today, but still Brentford managed to cope with the heat and spank Man Utd 4-0!

All the experts say we can expect more of these high temperatures. Maybe Lesmahagow and others should be looking to sign more Brazilians etc.

You don't get to decide that though. B teams are decisive. Everyone knows this. PLenty of folk think the LL is being progressive by doing it, plenty of folk think it makes the league look tinpot. The LL and the clubs knew this when they voted. You take the rough with the smooth.

Do you mean ''divisive'?  If so, you're right.

Whatever, we need to live with it for now.

That's good to read. There was a time when clubs were experimenting with that and said they'd lost money as a result.

Outside of the top division - for obvious reasons - could clubs in each league agree to a sensible maximum budget for playing staff to bring down costs? Would that be construed as an attempt to bring back a maximum wage? I can think of plenty of reasons why everybody wouldn't agree to it, or would only agree if it was pointlessly high, but would it be legal? Are players even earning enough to make it worthwhile in the lower divisions?

Was there ever a maximum wage in Scotland? The notorious £20 limit was  a Football League rule.
