Aye, but you've clearly got an anti-Dumbarton agenda, Jan, so we can't trust any publications that would employ you.

Being accused of that on that Facebook group is probably one of the highlights of my career. Absolutely superb.

As much as I dislike Farrell, I don’t recall this ever happening? Given it came from the FB page, I’m sure it’s me that’s wrong. Unless they’re referring to after the 2-2 at Stirling, but he didn’t say anything along those lines as far as I recall.

As someone who writes for the aforementioned publications, the only time I can remember Faz having a pop at the fans was after Annan away last season when we won 1-0. And the players got an absolute bucketload of stick leaving the pitch, despite us winning.

Just noticed it's been 3 months since our last home win

I hadn't realised it has been this long. But then when you mentioned it, it struck me I didn't even know what game that was. The 1-0 win against Elgin in atrocious conditions. A game I only remember because I flew out on holiday the next day.

It hasn't felt great for a wee while. But the basic stats are really grim at the moment. I think, mainly because of our league position, I hadn't realised quite how poor it's been for such a sustained period now.

The atmosphere yesterday was horrible. Not uncomfortable, dangerous or anything. Just really disheartening. You've got a team going through the motions and massively underperforming on the park, a fanbase with no belief in the manager or board, a manager who is struggling for the third season in a row to get any form going at all after Christmas. And a board who (outwardly at least) look oblivious to everything that I've just mentioned.

It's absolutely rubbish. Everything about the club at the moment just feels rubbish.

DFC, I'm in a huff with you.

  4. I said on our thread, but I'll repeat it here, that I thought 2-0 actually flattered us. 3-0 with Jordan Allan getting a goal rather than a second booking in stoppage time would've been fair on the balance of play - and his performance as a whole. Which was very good.

I didn't have a great feeling about the team when I saw Div Wilson, Blair Malcolm and Jinky Hilton all starting. And Finlay Gray on the bench. He might be extremely frustrating at times, especially when he doesn't pass the ball. But on a wide open pitch he's exactly what you need to go box-to-box. The three who started really lack legs, and Cammy Ballantyne ran the show from central midfield for the Bully Wee as a result.

Clyde started better than us. They looked like a team with the bit between their teeth; determined to make something happen. We looked half-arsed. All over the park. It was a shrug your shoulders and wrinkle your nose performance all day from far too many.

The opening goal was a decent strike from Martin Rennie. But it seemed to go in, in slow motion. He opened up the space around Gallagher Lennon far too easily, and (in real time at least) it felt like Jay Hogarth should've saved it.

Hogarth did make a couple of very good saves after that to his credit. He played fairly well, but he's just nowhere near Brett Long's levels. And I think our drop-off since Brett broke his ankle tells a story. He's a class act and miles too good for this division; and now he's out we're really seeing just how vital he is to us.

Getting to half-time at 1-0 was probably a better result for us than Clyde given their dominance. The double change clearly spoke volumes about what Faz thought of the showing, but we basically remained in the same formation. Finlay in the #10 in place of Hilton and Blair replacing Malcolm like-for-like.

Given Clyde were dominant, I thought we might've tried switching things up a wee bit. There was nothing really to lose given how poor the first-half was.

Our biggest threat comes down the right with Carlo and Kalvin. And that was the case all game. But when it doesn't go down that side we don't really offer much. It's just balls shelled into the channel for the tireless Michael Ruth to chase, hold up and then eventually lose as support wanders up at their own pace.

Aaron Healy was quiet and, aside from a nice cross in the first-half and a few wee touches here and there, contributed very little. But we only got him one v one with his full-back once all game. Everything else either went into the channels or slowly worked its way right before the move fizzled out.

Brian Kinnear in the Clyde goal made a terrific save in the first-half from Healy after a really good move (down the right). But that was basically all of note he had to deal with in the entire afternoon.

Jinky Hilton's performance was one for the ages; I don't think I can ever remember seeing a player caught on the ball in his own half so many times. It was like nicking sweets from a kid for the Clyde midfield. He wanted time and space. But they afforded him neither.

Even Cian Newbury, who had a very good first-half, looked spooked after being robbed by Jordan Allan for a chance early in the second-half. And didn't seem to recover. It's the first time he's looked like an inexperienced kid, albeit he was still probably one of our better performers over the 90. He was the only player consistently passing forwards and into good areas in the first-half, and I really do admire his bravery on the ball.

When we conceded the second goal (a penalty in the second phase of a corner that we didn't deal with) it became a real rabble. Newbury seemed to pop up at left-wing and centre-mid for a bit. Carlo floated all over the park. We committed bodies forward, but then didn't use them. It was a desperate mess without anything to give you hope.

The stats don't lie. The wheels have now well and truly fallen off and, unless we get our act together quickly, then I can see us failing to make the playoffs. Nothing really feels like it's going to change soon either, which is the most alarming thing. We haven't dominated a game since Forfar 10 days before Christmas. And next Saturday is our final game of February.

I don't want to be disingenuous to Clyde though. I thought, from 1 to 11, they were much better all over the park than us. They looked more up for it, they were organised, they managed the game well. It was a very solid performance. The sort of thing you'd expect the team in fourth to do to the team in 10th.

Jordan Allan led the line very well and caused us plenty of problems. With his silly second booking the result of frustration at his own finishing I'd suspect. Cammy Ballantyne dictated the whole game from the middle of the park, and both Lee Hamilton and Craig Howie were imperious at the back. Martin Rennie is a player I've always quite liked (even if he looks like he'll drive you mad) and he was a handful for us, especially when he drifted wide and played off Gallagher Lennon.

I've fancied Clyde to stay up since McCall did his January business. Avoiding 10th might now be a stretch, but those players and that manager are capable of winning the playoffs. No doubt about it in my eyes.

If it's EK then I hope you sword them. If it's Brechin then, to be honest, I'd rather a trip to Glebe Park than NDP next season. But I hope you can understand that it's nothing personal, purely the business of where provides the better away day.

What was the fans reaction at full time?

I'd say the reaction in the lead up to conceding the penalty was actually stronger than at full-time. By that stage there was a degree of acceptance - the usual boos and 'chuck it Farrell' but not a great deal beyond that.

A wee group of the more vocal younger guys had a run-in with a very well known voice from matches, who was previously right on the teams back all the time, but seems to have mellowed in recent years. He was losing the place over their calls for Faz's head I think?

I'd actually rather there was a furious reaction at FT. The half-arsed booing and shoulder shrugging is just another sign of how deflated the whole mood is around the place at the moment.

Today was the worst we've played all season. Clyde bossed the game from the first minute and, imo, 3-0 would've been a fair reflection of their dominance. We didn't look up for it, we were slow-paced, predictable and lacked invention. It was an utterly miserable way to spend an afternoon. One of the most deflating and grim (not outright infuriating) in quite a while.

  6. Aside from one very nice move down the right where Brian Kinnear made a terrific save, this has been all Clyde.

The goal was perhaps a bit fortunate and I think Jay Hogarth should be saving it. But it's the least Clyde have deserved.

Cian Newbury and Sean Crighton are playing well. Everyone is is between 'anonymous' and 'howling'.

I'd not be surprised to see a couple of changes at half-time. Ideally with Finlay Gray on for Div Wilson and Marc Kelly maybe on for Jinky Hilton. Who is having a horrible time of it.

The Bum has achieved his win % figure mostly in League 2 with one of the biggest budgets in the division. I’d be curious to know what his win % is post November over his time with us because it must be absolutely horrific.

I don’t think Naysmith is particularly special but he has tactical knowledge, knows how to change a game and his players will run through a brick wall for him based on this season. That combined with a good enough budget will get you out of this division. Unfortunately our board are letting an absolute buffoon of a gaffer waste a good League 2 budget with no sign of it changing any time soon.

These are for after the turn of the year, but I had them worked out a few weeks ago:

    2021/22 - 4/20 games (20%)

    2022/23 - 6/20 games (30%)

    2023/24 (as things stand) - 1/8 (12.5%).

Faz has been in charge of 122 games, winning 44. Only 11 of those wins have been post-new year. So 75% of his wins arrive in the first-half of the season, which is absolutely wild when you look at it written down.

Won the league at East Fife mate.

I'd assume you weren't aware of that. To say winning a league with a modest budget is nothing special seems a bit silly.

He's about to add another league win. He's maybe not Pep but he certainly knows his onions round these parts more than most.

The bit that's always confused me about Naysmith is how he almost managed to get a QOS side with a strikeforce of Lyndon Dykes and Stephen Dobbie relegated from the Championship. It's really the only blot on a CV that is otherwise fairly solid.

  9. We've been the better team. Hitting the post and having a goal chalked off. But a mixture of the pitch and our lack of pace means this is a dire watch.

Feels like I've spent 50% of the half watching the Spartans keeper take goal kicks. Must be how our opposition feel watching Brett Long.

  10. I really like what I've seen of Spartans this season; Cammy Russell, Bradley Whyte and Rhys Armstrong have caught my eye as players I didn't know all that much about before the year, but now really rate. I can see all three moving up the food chain a wee bit over the next summer or so.

Dougie Samuel is a class act and the way the folk connected with Spartans conduct themselves (based on the two games so far) is a reflection of that. I've said it before, I really wanted to hate the B-team enabling boys club. But I just can't. They are a good team on the park and a nice bunch off it.

I was digging into the Stats Centre last night (rock and roll) and something really caught my eye though. Spartans have the lowest number of shots and shots on target in the division (169 v our 222 and 70 v our 98). Despite that they've only scored one goal less than we have. So they are clinical but, based on other trends I've watched, that's unsustainable. Either they have to be shooting more, or they won't be quite as clinical throughout a 36 game season.

I was also quite surprised to see us so far up the shots table. We're third for shots on target, and if we can manager four tonight we'll go top. Given one of my bugbears this year has been that we don't shoot enough, I'm starting to question if that's just in my head!

Kalvin Orsi likely won't be fit enough to start (although I'd be trying to save him for the big astro at NDP anyway if he's not 100%). But I think we will see things given a wee shakeup again. I'm expecting to see Ryan and Tony Wallace return; although who drops out is anyone's guess.

I'm also really concerned about left-back. Can we please try Blair Malcolm there? I wouldn't even be against a simple switch of him and Gallagher Lennon to try Lennon in midfield with the pace of Finlay Gray to support him. Lennon is better on the ball than Malcolm, but I'd fancy Malcolm to be a more comfortable full-back.

Based on a mixture of what Faz might do and what we could do, I'll go for something like this:

    Jay Hogarth

Carlo Pignatiello Cian Newbury Sean Crighton Blair Malcolm

Aaron Healy Gallagher Lennon Finlay Gray Tony Wallace

    Ryan Wallace

    Michael Ruth

Healy looked like a good chalk on the boots, dig out a cross type winger. And I think that might work well for Tony Wallace. I also feel a bit guilty about dropping Marc Kelly after he did what we've been failing to do all season and got a goal from a cross. I'd not be against starting him in behind Michael Ruth in place of Ryan Wallace; but he could be a decent option to have in reserve. Wallace, for all his lack of goals, just has a bit of quality that can open up a game. And I think we miss him when he isn't there.

I also thought Div Wilson had a good game on Saturday, although wasn't sure if he was taken off after a knock. If he's fully-fit then he could take Lennon's place in central midfield.

A win makes the whole situation (on the park) look a lot brighter. A good performance and a win would be a really nice Tuesday night treat.

I've seen the club say that Ruth has nine goals and @Jan Vojáček said the same on the match thread yesterday so I've obviously incorrectly given him a goal somewhere. Help me out pls.

    Screenshot_20240211_150131_Samsung Internet.jpg

    Easy!

The Annan game he only got one. He was initially given the opening goal, but it was corrected to being a Matty Douglas own goal.

There was actually a lot of chat about who scored it. Because the SFA initially gave it to Ruth too, I believe Jim or Graeme got in touch with them to clarify if he was being given it. And they presumably watched it back and nabbed it off him (correctly unfortunately).

  12. That game wasn't the worst spectacle in the world. Especially given the form of the two teams and the state of the pitch. It wasn't free-flowing gorgeous football. But both sides were pushing bodies forward and it would've been entertaining enough for a neutral. Or, as the guy beside me said at one stage "here, this hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be."

We had more chances, but I thought Forfar merited their point. I felt like we were on top for the first-half and at half-time I was confident we'd win if we could add a third early on. Alas we didn't, Forfar grew into the game and had been threatening an equaliser when it arrived.

Mikey Ruth's miss at the end is a howler. But I'm prepared to cut him some slack on the basis that I thought he had another very good game today. It's just a shame he was left so isolated and doing his best with big punts for large spells of the second-half.

He took his goal superbly and I hope the miss doesn't dent his confidence. He's on the brink of double figures for the season, and that's something we haven't had from a striker since Calum Gallagher. So much of what he does is good; I just wish he was a bit calmer in front of goal at times.

Speaking of our goals; how refreshing was it to see us actually deliver a cross and someone get on the end of them? All season we've fannied about and not crossed it. Or have crossed it, and nobody has been there.

David Wilson's delivery for the opening goal was a beauty. The height, the pace, the spin. Everything was on the money. Div is the best crosser at the club imo, in fact he's probably one of the best footballers there, but again his game was blighted by moments of cheaply losing the ball. And then moments of real quality.

Aaron Healy pulled off some lovely old fashioned wing play for the second too. Face up your defender, burst beyond him and cross it. The sort of thing we've not done all season. It was a nice finish from Marc Kelly too, he got himself into some good positions today and you can see why he's scored so many goals in the Lowland League. I just don't fully think he's a winger though. Everything good he does is inside.

Healy looks like the sort of player who'll do some excellent things. But also get bullied out of games. He's just so tiny and was brushed off the ball quite often. I'm looking forward to seeing him on an astro pitch mind you, because that was no surface for a speedy winger.

He really looked like he had the beating of Tam Brindley though, and it was a shame we couldn't seem to get him involved in the second-half at all. Ruth became isolated and everything became long, direct and central.

That's all the positives. But the goals we lost were absolutely terrible. A header from a corner two minutes after taking the lead when we fail to pick up Forfar's biggest goal threat? Come on, man.

The second was even worse. A cross hung in the air for ages. I thought Jay Hogarth could maybe have dealt with it. He stayed at home, Gallagher Lennon was caught in two minds, Forfar have a shot that Hogarth awkwardly saves and the rebound is put in.

Today reinforced my worries about Lennon. A lot of young defenders make mistakes and then have the pace to drag themselves out a hole. Cian Newbury (who was excellent again today, and looks a real class act) was caught out a couple of times. But recovered with a little turn of acceleration.

Lennon just doesn't have that. So he's making rookie mistakes, without the rookie benefit of a wee bit of pace to recover. Martin McNiff last season covered his lack of pace by how well he read the game. Lennon isn't at that stage yet, and I worry about him moving forward. He's a centre-half playing at full-back. I'm absolutely sure of it. And the big open park at Clyde next week will not suit him at all.

I'm Carlo Pignatiello's biggest fan, but every time he picks up the ball at right-back and mazily dribbles to left-wing before losing it I want to kick the life out of the seat in front of me. Just take a touch and cross it. Or play a one-two with your winger. You don't need to breeze beyond a few people and end up on your weak side. There's absolutely zero point to it.

Faz said post-match he was pleased with the performance and with the chances we're creating the wins will come. And I agree on the attacking sense. But every week it feels like we're conceding silly cheap goals, and that's putting even more onus on us to be clinical at the other end.

I don't think we learned a great deal more about us this afternoon. And Forfar would probably say likewise. I think they are absolutely fine as a team, but there's not a great deal of excitement in that squad. They didn't really run at us with pace all that much, there wasn't really anyone who stood out as a creative force and I think the only save Jay Hogarth has made of note is from the shot that led to the second goal.

They'll probably stay up. But a lot of that might be down to just how poor Clyde are rather than anything more. With a manager like McKinnon, I'd be expecting a lot more if I was a Loon. The league table doesn't make pretty reading, and I was quite shocked to see you guys ninth after today. Albeit I know it's been a very disappointing campaign.
