  1. 0 attempts on goal.

    0. Zero.

I find it hard to believe that even a competent pub team wouldn't manage a single attempt over 90 minutes. Fair enough taking the approach that we need to be stuffy and stop losing before we can think about winning, walk before you can run etc, but I see absolutely nothing positive to take from that performance, or indeed, absolutely anything since McIntyre was given the job. Ridiculous appointment, and I agree that Nelms needs to be seriously scrutinised. Not just for his choice of appointees in the manager position, but also for sanctioning them signing a complete and utter load of dross over the past two and a bit seasons. It seems like we've gone from taking calculated risks that sometimes pay off and sometimes don't, i.e. Hendry and Kamara, versus the likes of Deacon and Moussa, to just signing outright garbage that patently isn't up to playing at this level.

I think throughout the squad, and it has become ridiculously bloated, there are probably 10-12 players who can actually cut it in this tier, however, neither of our past two managers seem to be able to identify them or coalesce them around a coherent approach or tactic. The rest are just pure deadweights who offer absolutely nothing. Why the hell did we sign Miller? It's not as if he's an unknown quantity or didn't have a recent body of work to judge him on. Who was responsible for scouting and assessing the likes of Ralph, Mendy, etc etc? Who sanctioned investing a fee in Hamilton, who appears to be no better than the ten-a-penny jobbing goalkeepers who are inevitably available to sign for free every single off-season?

Somebody needs to be held accountable for this absolute omnishambles. This isn't just a run of bad luck, or the natural ebb and flow of the relative quality of a team you'll see naturally over three or four seasons, it's complete and utter intransigence.

i didnt realise the corner stand and the one next to it were as old as that!

Definately one of scotlands quirkiest stadia. More so back in the day.

I remember going as a kid in the mid 90s and there being a small terraced stand to the right of the stands in the shot above next to the shed.

    Any photos of that?

I think you're talking about the 'Fair Play Award Enclosure'.

I'm no United historian, so I'm sure someone will correct me, but my recollection of it was that it was built using the prize money awarded to Utd for winning UEFA's 'Fair Play' award during the 86/87 UEFA Cup run. The stipulation was that this money had to be used on ground improvement and was around £30,000, hence why it resulted in a small, stand-alone enclosure.

    For what it's worth..

I've just been told McCann has 2 games to save his job.
Also heard ( unsure if I believe it or not) the players walked off the training pitch arguing with McCann

Take that from what you will.

    Sorta hope it's true

Wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I think most of us will have had an arsehole boss at work at some point. You go through the motions for them because they're the boss, but you don't take any heed of a single thing they say once they've proven themselves to be an incompetent f**k up over and over. Going by how dejected the players have looked during the past few matches, I wouldn't be surprised if they're at that stage with McCann. Ok, it's unprofessional to confront your boss, but workplaces eventually see employees losing their shit at idiot managers once they've had to thole them for long enough. I don't see why football is any different.

  4. Surely the type of football you play is either a joint decision between BoD and Manager, and therefore you appoint one amenable to and capable of implementing this, or you leave that up to the manager to decide what's best given the tools at his disposal.

Personally, I'm of the opinion it's not really for the BoD to be telling managers how to manage, but if you insist on doing that, then it seems a given that you'd go after a manager with proven ability to implement what you're after, and agree with him before he becomes your employee how exactly you expect the team to function, not hire him first and then get down to that discussion.

My concern here, is that if it is indeed the case the BoD are insistent on expansive football, they've hired a guy with no track record at all on which to judge the efficacy of such an approach. I'd love it if Dundee FC played like 1970 Brazil, but I'm sure that with having no actual management experience at all, even if I suggested to the BoD that's what I'd endeavour to achieve if appointed, they'd laugh me out of the door. I can't believe they appointed McCann because he expressed a willingness to try and play expansive, passing football, and are willing to stand by and watch him fail while attempting to do so. That's gross intransigence on the part of the BoD if that's the case. It's not just the results. We're a bit easier on the eye than we were under Hartley, but it's not like we're knocking it around with complete comfort and panache either. It's frantic, and closer to blind panic when the ball is in our defensive third, never mind the fact we're utterly impotent further up the park.

If the BoD are going to insist on the same from any new manager, the only reasonable response from any applicant should be 'forget it'.

Pretty much bang on for me Boo + I'm wondering how much of McCann's tactical fuckwittery was behind Caulker & Wighton wanting away

Yes, I've wondered why Caulker went from more or less grovelling about how wonderful McCann was when he signed for us, to not playing despite apparently being fit, and opting out of his contract without another club lined up. Ok, Caulker's problems are well documented so it's not as clear cut as laying this all at the feet of McCann in his particular case, but combine that with the fact he's fallen out with players before, Bain and Allan seemingly desperate to get away from him, Wighton underperforming then leaving,  and the fact we appear to be a wholly unattractive proposition to well known players who are happily joining other Scottish clubs while leaving us signing total unknowns from abroad, and you can't help but wonder if the word is out that our manager is an entirely unpleasant or incompetent individual.

Again, I've always wanted McCann to succeed. He was a bit of a cult hero of mine when I was younger and I hugely admired him as a player. However, it's my opinion he's completely out of his depth as a manager, and unfortunately his abrasive manner and total lack of objectivity is really putting me off him as a person too. I just hope the BoD act before he essentially relegates us and goes entirely from hero to villain.

  6. The 'confidence' thing is nonsense. Were they lacking in confidence for the first 'serious' match of the season when they looked shambolic v's Dunfermline?

I agree with McCann that the squad has the ability to do much better, but where I disagree is over what is the cause of their horrendous under-achievement. Our manager puts our players in a position to fail before they go out on to the pitch. He plays players out of position, uses formations that expose their weaknesses, his instructions and tactics are baffling, the players look confused, there's no discernible shape to the team. That's not 'confidence' or lack thereof, that's disorganisation. That's not on the players.

So typical of McCann's 'angry wee man' aggressive persona that as far as he's concerned he's beyond reproach, and the very visible problems are down to disheartened players, incompetent refs etc etc, basically anyone and anything but himself.

Of course the players' confidence is going to take a battering after a string of poor performances and terrible results, but there's an underlying cause here that, until it's addressed, the players alone aren't going to be able to overcome. We're not going to get results by just having the players 'believe in themselves' a bit more when they are fighting a pointless fight to begin with. We need to shitfest our way out of this situation, but with McCann's stubbornness in sticking to his football ethos I see no way that's going to happen while he's in charge. To be perfectly honest, the team performs like and gives off the vibe of a collection of individuals who have absolutely no faith in the guy leading them.

  7. Really sad news about Caulker. Was well worth the risk considering the calibre of player he can be when he's healthy. Can only wish him all the best with his battles, and if he does conquer his demons and comes back to Dens one day in an opposition shirt then I'll be glad to see him. (unless it's Sevco or the Arabs in which case he can f**k off)

Interesting how you can clearly distinguish our 4-4-1-1 formation in that still.

Dundees set up on the other hand...

No apparent shape, and players seemingly popping up wherever they like a la 2000's Real Madrid Galacticos has been a recurring theme so far this season.

Free ride. No. But the goal is Meekings fault, IMO. Mendy loses the ball facing his own goal, then the ball bobbles and the St.J player lifts it over the top. Below is Meekings positioning at that precise moment.

    IMG_0327.jpg

He decides to play offside from here, about 3 seconds too late as this is the second phase of play with him in this position. It’s very poor decision making as well as a poor starting position which leads to watt being played onside.

Both Mendy and Meekings at fault, however, I also think Hamilton has made it far too easy for Watt by staying camped in his 6 yard box. It's immediately apparent Caulker is never catching Watt from behind, so the goalie should be coming out to meet him much sooner. There's no other attacker streaking through the middle for Watt to square it to, so the keeper should be aiming to meet him at the edge of the penalty box. At worst you force Watt to try the lob, or force him to go around you to the wide side, and give Caulker the chance to get back for the challenge or get on the goal line. It's not an unforgivable brainfart, and he's not culpable in the way Meekings is, but at the same time it's still yet another error from Hamilton.

I have full confidence that our team is good enough to stay up. Unfortunately the person telling them how to play isn’t.

This is it in a nutshell.

This squad, even with garbage up front, is easily capable of pushing for sixth. There's one single reason why, instead, we're looking like relegation certainties, and it's not any of the players.

Dominate possession, miss a fuckton of sitters, lose a comedy goal.

    63% possession - check

Watt running in behind a static defence trying to play offside - check

Moussa missing a free header from 6 yards under no pressure at all - check

It's so fucking predictable. McCann is utterly fucking clueless. Hasn't the first idea how to sort this out. If we had even a half-way competent manager then this squad is easily capable of pushing for sixth place. Utterly ridiculous we have 0 points after playing newly promoted St.Mirren, an off-colour Aberdeen, and our bitches in Perth. Then there's the cup fiasco vs lower division teams. Get this idiot fired right fucking now.

Totally agree. Full back is a much tougher gig these days.

Which is why I keep saying we should be playing with a back three and pushing ours up the park as wingbacks.

We have an abundance of capable Center halfs, so it makes sense to use them and give our less that stellar fullbacks less responsibility. It's just further exposing a weakness trying to play with a four at the back. Another reason I've totally given up on McCann ever figuring it out.
