  1. Christ I forgot about Purdie, his left foot was a cannon. Revered at Aberdeen I also remember Les Hutchinson as keeper playing a binder in a 1-0 Cup win at Cumnock- weve got there with better teams and lost. Quickest hat-trick------------ Peter Boyle, 7 mins against Cumnock also, 2-0 down with 10 mins to go in the Dryborough semi-final at Yoker, won 3-2
  2. Tommy Burns would be the keeper hands down, followed by Big Mo, both were Scottish Junior Internationals Alan Sneddon was a right-back. Peter Allan would be the best defender by a country mile. Alastair Duff as striker, but people seem to forget the stupid criticism he got, with Peter Boyle- an Australia International ( passed away down under 3 years ago )
  3. Football is a funny old game,I remember the good old days as well, especially the 80s,but there is know point looking back,it's what happens from here on in that matters, and no doubt we will get there Lets not take too long about it
  4. Sorry, but I dont think it does. I have results dating back to 1965, and our home record up until the recent decline is hugely positive. There are teams beating us now who had NEVER beaten us, a 3 I can think of with 2 victories against us in 40 years. The Sectional League Cup , West of Scotland, Evening Times Cup & Dryborough Cup were not to my mind minor trophies. I would put the McLeod & Central cups in that category. The point is, we were COMPETITIVE in all competitions. I was sick of Pollok beating us in so many finals in the 80s. Have a great night & best wishes---- we will return.
  5. I agree with you. I was just correcting Larky9. We are where we are- I know guys are working hard, but the decline is so great and the guys so few by past standards, I worry. The opportunities should be there; Larkhall is a decent sized town ( 16, 000 ) (( much bigger than most towns with successful Junior Clubs, is football-mad, Rangers are not the force they were, has the history behind it, and past players loved the club ( until last year ). We own our own place, have done since 1881, and Im sure there is huge local affection and latent support. Were not getting into it
  6. Thats not true either. In the past we were comparatively wealthy by Junior standards, decent crowds, social club, even tote doubles, junior discos etc. We were able to pay decent money and transfers. You seem totally unaware of this, we were not a pauper club, and certainly not regarded as such. No disrespect to the other Lanarkshire clubs, but we always on a higher level with perhaps the exception of Shotts and sometimes the Vics. Income streams seem to have dried up. Committee size only 1/3 of what it was in the 70s
  7. In that time off the top of my head; 7 Sectional League Cup final appearances, 2 wins, ( 1 v Pollok, 1 v Shotts ) 5 losses ( 3 to Pollok, 1 to Petershill, 1 to Bellshill ); 1 West of Scotland final loss to Irvine Meadow; 3 Evening Times Cup Finals, all lost, the last one to Kilsyth; another Dryborough Cup Final lost to a very good Kello Rovers team 4-3, the outstanding John Blackwood missing a sitter; A couple of Central Cup wins , several RJ McLeod Cup wins ( one the same week as the Dryborough Cup win at Shettleston )several losses... more if I put my mind to it. Lots of decent players and teams through that period. Despite the odd screw-up in the Scottish- like at Lugar for example---we had some great days. Players like Gerry Hamilton, Pat Barkey, John Mulholland, Billy Thomas, Peter Allan, Eric Alexander etc at different periods would have graced any team in Scotland. Tommy Burns , Tam Devine were great keepers. Since that time we were challenging in the 80s and 90s and for a spell seemed well established in the Premier League, then were relegated. The point is we were challenging and prominent, even if up and down- and we had our history behind us, and teams were very wary of coming to Larkie
  8. We are where we are and I know people are working hard to get us out of it. However, I hope something of the soul of the Club hasn't been so damaged that we bob along the bottom for a long time and all our proud history and achievements become lost in the mists of time and we are not perceived the way we used to be.
  9. Holders of all these proud records, famous Larkie- the greatest nursery in Junior football-----------we will return. I just hope it dosent take as long as General MacArthur, or has as many casualties. I feel like KIA
  10. I'm sure i read before he's a kelty hearts fan , so don't see why he's got a problem with Larkhall Thistle , maybe he'd care to explain ? Jealousy maybe, or perhaps the Kelty webbed feet are sore at this time of year
  11. No amount of drugs, alcohol or grub could erase the pain
  12. Thank you. I know its possible, just so bloody hard to get through. I am old enough to remember us beating Glenafton 10-0 in a West tie, the Stonehouse Violet 14-2 the next week, I must add at this point that the Violet keeper was a lifetime Jags supporter who sadly passed away recently, ending a horrible year for us on and off the field.
  13. I remember seeing Royal Albert crush the Talbot , I think ( maybe someone here will check this ) 13-0, ( long time ago ), so maybe there is hope for our resurrection. I also remember travelling through to Auchinleck for a West tie many moons ago which was abandoned due to failing light at 3-3 , with the Jags awarded a penalty which couldn't be taken . ( For some reason, the game started late ). Talbot won 3-1 on the return , which shocked us, but that was part of the rise of Talbot into the machine we know today.
  14. You've misunderstood me bud. It was directed entirely at our friend from the wilderness. Thanks for the kind comment though, but after yesterday I just don't know. Recent results and performances had showed a great improvement. Who would have thought that this could happen to US?
  15. I believe he is from an unchartered part of Fife and supports a team that I have canned food older than.
  16. Come back when you have achieved 10% of what the Larkie Jags have in our long history. I wont live that long.....
  17. One further point- Alastair Duff could score against anyone, and was lethal from outside the box.
  18. Alastair Duff, followed by Peter Boyle, followed by John Mullholland, followed by Graham Gracie----------as strikers Peter Allan followed by Ecky Alexander as defenders. Big Mo for keeper, followed by Tommy Burns . Martin Mulhearn followed by Gerry Hamilton as midfielders. Pat Barkey followed by Johnny Sanaghan as wide players. John Chalmers could play anywhere George Dickson and Jim Dempsey as enforcers Alan Sneddon followed by Tam Sutherland as full backs
  19. Heh heh. One from Rutherglen might be more accurate. I remember Alan once trying to chip the Ladeside keeper ( At Kilbirnie ) from inside our half ( keeper miles out of his box )- ball landed in an ice-cream van outside the ground. I cannot attribute a religious connotation to this attempt.
  20. Somewhere between wishful thinking and a hope that it will revive interest & support having sparked a few memories locally.
  21. Interested to see on our website the article about Alastair Duff. By far the best natural finisher seen in living memory wearing the Red & White stripes with a venomous shot / highly accurate shooting. I recall, though, criticism as he couldnt tackle. My memory differs from the report ,though, as I always believed Alan Duff scored first at Linlithgow, not Alastair, a prod from just inside the box. Two second -half goals from Alastair saw us through. Maybe Im wrong. In my lifetime we have played the Rose 3 times, and won them all ( Lanark & Lothians, Scottish Cup 1976-77, Dryborough Cup (( 2-0, Alan Sneddon scoring ))- how times have changed. Hoping the 140- year centenary against Dukla Pumpherston will help to spark the Club back to its former glory. Readers should look at our Facebook to see the legends of the past and the calibre of player produced. Its going to be emotional.
  22. Ditto this week; until today, Muirkirk had never beaten Larkhall, ever.
