  1. Not biting the arse of £10m then when you add in Cadden that Flow mentioned there was a deal (don't expect it was as much if they played it as cute), Campbell who must have cost Luton +£500k based on his appearances and if Erwin is a datum.

As an aside I asked Gillingham fans for a heads up on Slattery as they seen him more regularly than the Southampton support, I'll add to this when more comes in but:

    High tempo
    Tough tackler
    Doesn’t mind putting it about
Played pretty well for us but I don’t think he’d get a regular start in our current midfield, which is pretty strong.
He is well thought of by most Gills fans, but you will no doubt find a tosser who thinks he’s crap.

Hard to say, he only played 7 times for us then got injured, but Steve Evans appeared to think highly of him.

Definitely would have been welcomed back without a doubt. Good reputation among Gills fans.Put his name in the search on this site and you will see for yourself.

Seems very much a like-for-like with Campbell. Expect a few yellows this season then.

  2. Perfect sense.

But do you think it has also heralded a change in how we operate on the transfer markets? If so, this surely has to be the way forward.

While not astounded by Jim Goodwin's approach I do think filling his team with proven SPFL players will pay off, certainly to Christmas.

Outwith the big 5 city clubs (and Dundee Utd due American naivety perhaps), the rest of us have gone down the English lower league, journeyman, redemption story, long term crock approach.

We're now signing players that both require a fee and also putting them on longer deals than we have for the first time since we had a rich sugar daddy in the Bahamas playing non-virtual Championship Manager.

Maybe this was part of the assurance GA was given when offered the job.

  3. Club has on the face of it changed its signing policy a bit it seems. Moult and Johnson were signed on 3 year deals under Les and I know McGinn was floated to him but he didn't bite. They were purchased with sell ons expected so the activity this summer is not new just not seen for quite a while, they both proved lucrative but conversely Randolph didn't.

The length of the deals does seem at odds with the drastic reduction in revenues from the lockdown at the end of 19/20 season, all the way through last and until the end of this one. I say this as season ticket revenue is essentially halved by offering a 2-FOR-1, no walk up revenue, concessions, hospitality or away fans. We don't know how long that will last this year too. Certainly few would envisage the South being full of 5,000 baying OF fans at any point.

Is there any restriction on the £3m from wee Nicola when it comes to transfer policy? If not I'm sure it could be used in other facets of club business and allow funds to go to potential transfers. The potential of purchasing players of quality opposed to free agents which is a bit of a lottery with the aim to improve the product on the pitch and capitalise on future returns is refreshing and maybe not been available if it wasn't for that loan.

  4. Seems the big stud has signed. Seems to have pedigree which would suggest a starter. One goal in every 7 appearances probably due to him being 6'3".

Word from Scandinavia, his scoring rate from corners needs deliveries from a single man rather than a duo .......

However at both his previous clubs he managed what seems like a season's worth of appearances or less over two year contracts. No context as to why. Being 32 you'd hope he has the nous to guide a younger player beside him whither it be Mugabi or O'Connor.

So therefore expecting an 18 month injury vs Hibs. #standard

In the meantime I'm off down to the Garrion Bridge with Rohypnol and some pickled fish to lure him out.

What is the point of moving the ball half a yard? it doesn't do anything except make it harder because you have to hit a moving ball.

If they just want to draw opposition players out the box there are much better ways than having two of our guys stand in the corner of the park.

I'm with you on this one, ball played 1 yard to teammate, 2 defenders close to block, corner taker has higher potential to not get cross in, extra hassle and urgency that doesn't exist if the ball is whipped in initially. The only benefit it seems is one extra defender is drawn out to mark the second man and you'd imagine its a forward so the chance of a counter is reduced. Conversely we also have two players opposed to one is the most useless part of the park with two defenders close to negate any additional threat.

Same thing goes for the two centre half's standing 2 yards outside the 6 yard box if it draws the strikers forward and stops bunching in the midfield I get it and if we had central defenders who are composed on the ball such as Aldred and Pete then again passing it forward opposed to the lottery of a 65 yard kick makes a lot of sense.  We all recognise we don't have the personnel to play like this so why is GA persevering as if he has a point to prove or even worse, an ethos/style we wants to impart.

With respect to O'Donnell, perceived fatigue has nothing to do with the fact he doesn't inspire those around him with authority, composure and confidence. Similar to McHugh, he would better serve his teammates by concentrating on his own form which in C&A is decidedly average since arriving.

  6. Evident there is a lot of formations and tactics tinkering and fitness levels needing upped. Surprised at some of the team with it being a team coached by a guy who had 800 appearances in his career so obviously knows how to take care of himself seemingly off the pace. I understand the guys arriving from down South thinking second gear may be enough which already seems to be a wake up call.

With St Mirren, Hearts, Dundee and Dundee Utd all on cruise control it is worrying with the league due to start in 10 days. As has been pointed out, you ask any one of 4,500 regulars at FP in January what we needed and you be told a 1 or 2 midfielders and one, ideally two centre halves. As we sit here after making heavy work of what should be a coasting session those positions are still open and needing filled.

What does give me the fear for the season ahead is if I was any of the other 11 managers in the league, I'd pretty much only be worried about my own teams game rather than having to deploy anything to counter what we have at present.

I thought a few weeks ago that Watt would be the foil for Van Veen in a front two. The issue is both Woolery and Lawless have nothing in the tank to get down the wings and cover back for anything more than 60 minutes.

Nothing I've seen so far would suggest he's likely to achieve that goal.

Maybe you overlooked the league table from when he took over till the end of the season where we secured the 4th highest points tally, it would have been best of the rest if we got a result against Ross County on the final day. So to say that is neither fair nor accurate.

Granted I think I was only entertained with Hibs away, the rest of it was painful on my peepers to watch and we smashed and grabbed a couple like Killie away.

He was poor last night, very poor, at times in the second half it felt like having 10 men because he either 1) didn’t reach balls played to him or 2) got the ball and had it taken off him/fell over.

Since he was one of the only ones who actually gave a f**k between January and May I'm willing to give him one night off.

It's very easy to give it tight to the forwards when they are standing around twiddling their thumbs because there is no link and support from the midfield behind them. As has been pointed out already, midfield has been an issue with our team for the best part of 3/4 years with the emergence of Campbell essentially papering over the cracks. One decent midfielder picking up MotM awards is all well and good if he has quality beside him and by and large we haven't. Repeated poor recruitment has hobbled any chance of building on what foundations we had and improving.

Is it just me or is O’Donnell actually quite pish?

No astute observation, for someone with his billing decidedly average to poor. Not that he is alone, from bottom to top turgid. Long ball shows you have no confidence in your midfield and their ability to create. Lamie - bombscare, McGinley - average, Crawford - not his fault but WTF, midfield may have a chance if there was a calming influence but there isn't.

Scraping a draw against Queens Park, 2-0 down against QofS and this display that's up there with Albion Rovers in Hamilton.

Only benefit is Alexander will be invigorated/shamed into bringing in personnel starting tomorrow morning at 9am.

  10. Lot to cover, so QP have had a significant cash injection means they are attracting Championship level players when about to compete in the 2nd after being promoted from the 3rd.

Of course many will cite "ahh its only a glorified warm up", "calm down", etc. but this is the same shit that happened a year ago and progressed into the first game in Dingwall. I dunno, I'd maybe like to see a team with the 7-9th biggest budget in the country show up and actually look like it.

However that can't excuse what was witnessed tonight, mid-July or not, it was pretty much woeful. Kelly is the only one to avoid any criticism. Based on his hutspah, I'll predict Van Veen to get 15 goals minimum, however he needs service and he ain't gonna get it from those behind him at present.

I appreciate the midfield was makeshift as Covid probably disrupted the planned starting line up but yet again as we've found in 7 of the last 10 seasons our midfield is lacking and will be the key to our downfall unless addressed as a matter of urgency. Lamie started to make less errors as the season progressed and Dec was unavailable but he was back today with a vengeance.

Outfought, outplayed and outworked, did not think I'd see that in our first game back under GA and what he achieved from Jan till May and his pedigree as a player.

I would need to have a wee look but I am pretty sure the bulk of our squad are players who were not established at any decent level before Jim brought them in and gave them a chance.

If our squad looks good now it's largely down to the fact that Jim brought them through.

Was referring more to your summer acquisitions which your two colleagues seemed to pick up on. Also as a Motherwell fan, conscious that you took Tait and Erwin previously and now bolstered with Dunne and Main.

We were shockingly bad tonight and stole a win against a team that looked 3 leagues above us rather than the reverse. I never understand why so many big teams are a crock of shit playing in July/August when the excuse of players adapting and bedding in is used as if the lower league opposition don't have those same issues.

Anyway, I would be surprised if you're not top 6 come the first international break in September.

  12. The rest of the SPFL wee teams I imagine will be viewing how Goodwin's policy of filling the team almost exclusively with proven (if not amazing) SPFL talent will turn out. The standard these days seems to be every team outwith the OF rebuilding (which is now the norm every summer) with the vast majority being from League One and below down South, a handful of academy graduates and one or two from the Scottish lower leagues.

A lot to be said to having players who know the drill and pace required of our game. Will be interesting if nothing else.
