  1. Finally managed 18 holes in April yesterday - huge winds, 3 horrible squally showers and ridiculously soft and squelchy conditions.

    It was bliss.

Why we were playing a competition off the medal tees I've no idea, though...

Perfect, it'll be like Tiger winning on one leg or Stephen Hendry mopping the floor with everyone despite a broken elbow.

    Waste of money.

    Fixed it for me.

  4. No way can the Augusta Committee be deemed a bunch of reactionary weirdoes. I've been watching the Masters for as long as I can remember, and off the top of my head, here's a rundown of things they've managed to sort out during this time:

    • The "No caddies other than our own" rule. And, of course, all their own caddies were black, so that's hugely progressive! And they retained the painters overalls by way of tribute...
    • Not showing any coverage at all of the front nine.
    • Only showing brief highlights of the front nine.
    • Erm...

    A comprehensive list, I'm sure you'll agree.

  5. Despite the current/recent conditions and weather forecast, Fife Golf Association insists that the final of the North East Fife Winter League (Handicap) Cup between Drumoig and Ladybank will be played at, erm... Charleton, the only non-links or -heathland course in the League. Charleton will not only be a quagmire given the last couple of months, it currently doesn't even have a fully-functioning clubhouse due to a fire in *checks notes* June 2020.

Apparently, it's "their turn on the rota" and, despite both finalists requesting other venues, or even that the final be played at a non-neutral venue determined by the toss of a coin, it's off to Charleton we trot. I'm expecting the post-match meal to be a Pot Noodle. Should be fun... 🙄

  6. Whatever the reason for members no longer using bar and catering in their club (financial pressures, post-COVID behaviours, cliques), club Committees (and members) need to accept that running bar, and particularly, catering operations very seldom result in surpluses that can be reinvested into the club or offset to reduce fees; they do well to break even, and the fact the the income and expenditure for these items are rolled pretty much across the board rolled into wider club accounts mean the vast amount of committees and members don't even know how much profit/loss these operations are actually running at (particularly where staff in smaller clubs are often doing a bit of admin as well as running a bar - these aspects are very, very seldom cross-costed in meaningful P&L reports).

Clubs need to find a way of delivering what their members actually want from their club - and when was the last time your Club ran any kind of meaningful (and regular) member survey to wring this information out? I'll bet if you have completed a detailed member survey over the last five years, it was a one-off exercise that hasn't been repeated. I'll also bet that the majority feedback was about on-course stuff (bunkers, pace of play, availability of morning tee-times on a weekend, etc) rather than the bar offer or the catering menu...

A very bold move from oor Bob when he’s struggling to make cuts…

Given the "chuckle" emoticon from the PGA Tour account, I reckon they must be in on the joke . I imagine it'll be seen as yet another way to help folk  filter out the Good Guys from the W*nks...

didnt think you could get cut during the winter.  i thought pretty much all courses in Scotland will officially open for medal play within the next 10 days.

If your course has a Rated Winter Course, or you play off standard tee areas throughout the winter, you can get cut any time, and Scottish Golf has been encouraging clubs to use this. There are a couple of applied limitations (clubs are expected to put in place a Local Rule re use of fairway mats, and these can only be played from fairways and tees, and no more than 2 temporary greens can be in play), but I have heard that a few clubs have started to apply handicap changes for their off-season medals and Pro Shop Winter Sweeps.

I kinda interpreted that as Spieth and Viktor trying to make sure Rory didn't get done for an illegal drop - knowing where a ball crossed a lateral water hazard can be a bugger to judge from back on the tee, particularly when there's water all the way down one side.

It should never have taken that long, though: "You sure?" "You sure you're sure???" "On your head be it - don't do a Monty!" would've been far quicker...

Went up to the Pro for a fitting for some new irons.  I've currently got a set of Taylor Made Rocket Bladez that i've had for about 12 years.  I've never thought that they were particularly holding me back (there's far more in my game than my clubs at fault for that), but the difference on the trackman between my existing 7  iron and the irons that i tried (TM Q10'S, Ping G425 & G430) was incredible.

I hit a few warm up shots with my own 7 iron and was hitting it just under 160 which I would say would be about right for me. All of the newer irons I was up in the high 180's.  Even poor connections were travelling over 170.  The increase in forgiveness is instantly noticeable as well.

eta:  I played with a set of G425's last year on holiday and really liked them, and coincidentally they were the ones I was most comfortable with today

Now all you have to do is work out what your new 160-yard club is... 😉

  11. Another solid start (-4) for Connor Syme today. He does appear to be in very decent form at the moment, without converting into wins.

Interestingly, his was the worst round of his 3-ball, who were a combined -17 (-8, -5, -4).

There can't be too many times that's happened. I wonder if the 18th was his final hole or his 9th.

He teed off at the 10th in round 2, which means it's been downgraded to merely a horrible choke from one of the worst of all time.

  13. I see Conor Syme is once again in a decent position near the top of the leaderboard, this week in South Africa.

No coverage on Sky Sports, which is puzzling given that it's a designated DP World Tour event, it's part of the "International Swing", and they're covering next week's event which has the same prize fund and the same amount of Race To Dubai points available.
