Inbhir Nis -vs- Dùn Phàrlain
CallumPar replied to Salvo Montalbano's topic in Scottish Championship General Chatter
Partick Thistle are better than Inverness. But we actually went out to win that game. The mentality is what I have the issue with, not the quality of players. I never claimed we were even close to being a top 4 team. I just don’t believe that playing for 0-0 against a team below us, that haven’t won at home in over 3 months and are going through an injury crisis is ambitious enough. Inverness have a threadbare squad, with lots of players injured and others playing through injury. I’ve been reading/hearing Pars fans saying that makes you easy to play against for months now. I’m frustrated that McPake went back to the 3-5-2 again, for no obvious reason. Frustrated that we just settled for 0-0 there, despite the fact that Inverness aren’t that good, they haven’t won at home for ages and are going through an injury crisis. Start the game fast and get the crowd agitated. You mentioned the atmosphere at east end being nervy, why don’t we try to make home fans nervous when we go away from home? It certainly worked a treat on Friday. This isn’t a dig at you. I just don’t understand why our manager is making these decisions at all. Playing ok, getting into good areas, almost scored right on half time… nah, let’s go with the tried and failed system. -

If they’d scored the penalty, that would have been Inverness’ first home win since 11th November (8 home games). It’s not as tough as it’s made out to be. We just made it look like it is. We should be trying to distance ourselves from the team in 9th, not playing for 0-0, managing a grand total of zero shots on target in the entire match. -

Yeah. The team look much more comfortable when we play a back 4 with wingers. Trying to shoehorn them into the 3-5-2 system hasn’t worked and makes us look absolutely dreadful. First half, we weren’t great, but we were a lot better than we were in the second. As you say, the new defenders look far more comfortable in a 4. I also think Edwards is better with a winger in front of him. O’Halloran’s better with a full back behind him and the attackers/midfield are better when we have wingers, rather than wing backs. I honestly don’t think the 3-5-2 benefits anyone. -

Yeah. It’s been every bit as bad as it was during the 8 game winless run. I don’t understand the switch. Moved the new RB into the back 3, when he’d been fine at RB. McPake just determined to make the 3-5-2 work it seems. -

What? I’ve been watching the stream and it’s been fine. Not missed much though. 75 mins played and the only shot on target has been a penalty that Mehmet saved. -

Jakubiak rounded the keeper. Then I’m not sure his shot was even on target when Devine blocked it. -

To be clear, my comments aren’t in relation to the penalty - which looked like a clear penalty. Almost an exact replica of what Allan did away to Airdrie, where he also gave away a pen. But he started off stopping the game at every opportunity and wasn’t letting the game flow. Has been better the last 10 mins or so. -

The referee seems to be giving fouls for the slightest contact. It is Gavin Duncan though, he’s proven in the past that there doesn’t even need to be contact for him to give fouls against us. -

Good save from Mehmet. Was worried when the pen got given. We’ve started really poorly, but that’s not a big surprise, need to try and get a positive result - it doesn’t need to be pretty. -

Seems about right. I’m sure he’ll have at least one disallowed for offside. -

Come on, that’s a bit harsh. I’m sure he’ll only score one own goal tonight. Danny Devine will score the other. -

Was it not only 2 games? Hopefully it’s just a wee knock/niggle and he’ll be back for the weekend. -

Not getting carried away, it’ll still be a tough final 12 games. But it’s good to finally get that win - and against one of the better sides (who have comfortably beaten us twice earlier in the season). There are players in there that can help us get results and we need to keep the likes of Todd fit and get others (Bene, Fisher, Breen) back. -

Ok. I’ve been critical of McPake and the club lately. Time for some praise when it’s due. McPake got the team and tactics right tonight. System looked really weird early on, with McCann and Holmes coming so deep when we didn’t have the ball and the full backs playing so narrow. But it worked and, for that, McPake deserves some credit. We got a bit of luck, yes. But I think we earned that luck. Todd looked like the same player we all thought he was. Brilliant goal from him. If we can keep him fit, we’ll have a goal threat again. Jakubiak was also a handful for Thistle’s defence - bringing him on once we had the lead was a great tactical move. MFW looks a very good CB. Edwards looked back to his best, back in his LB role. Allan and Otoo in the middle worked fine, with Otoo putting in a great shift. Forgot how good he is in midfield. Hamilton is just a brilliant player to have. -
Matty Todd is absolutely fantastic. Brilliant to have him back. Delighted for him to get his goal. Also, Benjamin went absolutely crazy when he scored. He may not be a great footballer, but you could see he cares and that’s certainly much more passion than we got from the players Hughes brought in 2 years ago. MFW really coming onto a game as well.
