What decline? In 2008, we nearly qualified automatically out of a group containing the 2 previous World Cup finalists having beaten one of them home and away. The last campaign we got utterly scudded by an average Russian team (twice) and a shite Kazakhstan team. We barely scraped past Cyprus and San Marino in 3 of those games as well. What do you mean irrelevant, he’s pointing out that this current crop of players is no better than the 2008 team which won 8 games in qualifying and therefore we are no further on. He’s also already pointed out that he thinks the decline is due to poor coaching and other countries being ahead of us in that area. Your claim that we will make a tournament and this is a good group of players is unfortunately questionable given the horrific campaign we just had. We may well make a tournament but it’s not because we are any better than we were 20 years ago, it’ll be down to the fact it’s much easier to qualify.

I can understand people not liking a new signing at either old firm club but the level of abuse Lennon received in those early days was way beyond anything I’ve ever seen. I certainly don’t remember any other signing receiving death threats and having to retire from international football because they signed for one of the two clubs.

It’s quite simple really, he was the first high profile Northern Ireland internationalist that Celtic had ever signed. His signing created a massive sectarian backlash at the time. Drew is right that he was roundly booed and given ridiculous treatment from the moment he walked out that tunnel at Dens for his debut. I have no issue with younger fans hating him today because he is “unlikeable”, however he only acted the way he has because of the initial treatment he received when he signed, which was 100% sectarian. To suggest otherwise is just mental.

Rangers current financial position means they absolutely can not afford to be losing out on the best part of £1m regardless of their opinion of the SPFLs governance. I don’t want to derail the thread and go down the Rangers financial route so I’ll say fair enough if that’s how you see it.

If this £10m somehow comes to fruition then the potential loss in prize money for Rangers if they finish 2nd would be £960k (£1.34m for 1st). Given the £10m+ losses Rangers are making every season and the continued material uncertainty over their ability to continue as a going concern, i find it quite staggering that you would rather lose £960k rather than pay £5k, purely to spite Dundee Utd.

It did advantage them, they finished 0.037 points behind QOS instead of 2 points. Not that it helped in the end.

I think Scottish footballs attitude towards John Collins really highlights why we are where we are. Reconstruction, colt teams, project brave etc etc will make no difference because the main issue is purely mental, our players have the ability but seriously lack the mental attributes to make that step up and until chairman/managers/players and fans understand that massive change is required in the set up of our clubs it will never ever change. I personally love listening to JC and think it’s a real pity he is ridiculed as much as he is. I think he does have the character to make it happen but if no one is willing to go along with him then there’s not much he can do. I hope he does buy a club and introduce that sort of culture. I reckon he’d prove a lot of people wrong.
