I was referring to a game pre-Covid at Tynecastle, I think we lost 4 or 5 nil. But I always remember him being excellent that day. He was also good this season against Dundee though and scored a nice goal.

    Cheers

That's the game with Hutton in goal but sadly I don't remember anyone having a good game that day after initially thinking we'd do well.

I missed the Dundee game where we played well till Cammy got sent off.

Where's the season ticket notice and some signings please!

Yip, and in the semi-final. Don't know how well I phrased it but I said he was poor until the start of the play-offs (2 goals in 15 games from mid January to May, at a time when the team was scoring 5 or 6 goals every other week). He showed bits of his best in the play-offs when they came around.

He tends to perform better in big games I would say, last year in the play-offs his hat-trick against Montrose was incredible. And his best ever game for us (apart from Montrose) was away to Hearts in the cup. Which I think ties in to my point that when he's got that extra bit of motivation you'll get a bit more out of him.

Much agreement by me but was it against Dundee in the cup in November or am I making a senior moment error?

Once they leave us I rarely take any interest but this could be an unusual season facing up to Smith and Easton whilst berating Ian Murray.

Is there a hatred between Morton and Airdrie or is @Cowshed just trying really, really hard?

Can't really see a history of edginess: the COVID season play off was too late for our depleted squad and an easy Morton win

Prior to that it would be the season where Morton fell apart after being well ahead and the Diamonds triumphed.

The linesman one was a game I missed but my mates still talk about it.

The seats in that main stand are surely for midgets is the one memory I have from my last visit.

My take on it is quite simple. Rhys picked which he considered our best 11 for the play off games and he never made an appearance. You would therefore think that for the coming season we will have to sign players who improve our starting 11 therefore I really can't see where he fits in.

He played in the Falkirk second leg . He has potential but we will need someone stronger in midfield.

  5. I watched a very good Sky documentary on the title winning team of 83. I recognised most of the players on the pitch in the final clip but was one of them John Gardiner who had a loan spell with the Diamonds and who was in an Easterhouse school team I looked after in early 70s?

Was he the reserves goalie to the excellent Hamish!

Thanks for any info and hope you stay in Premier.

I’ve already seen shouts for Kyle Connell on twitter. He did well a couple of years ago but no thank you!

A very different team to mine but also hard to argue with it. I’d have liked to have fitted Lister and Barr into mine. I suppose with these one change will affect quite a lot given you’re trying to fit players into a formation.

Quite surprised Rhys didn't make your team: he was the first one I'd gone for. But it's tough indeed. I have no idea on our squad for the:

    Championship:

merely typing that word has me in wonderland.

That's a fair effort and well balanced attacking side. I'll need a lot of time to look back over those seasons if I'm to make any other suggestions.

I found this really difficult and omitted loan players so Turner is out.

Amazingly I have been unable to pick Cal Gal as the recent seasons are over loaded with others.

Quite difficult looking back at the poor seasons, so here goes in four four two.

    Hutton 2019

    Bain 2015

    Fordyce 2021

    Gregor Buchanan 2013

    Josh Edwards 2018

    Dylan Easton 2022

    Craig Barr 2014

Rhys McCabe 2023 ( and Manager)

    Callum Smith 2020

    Andy Ryan 2017

    Jimmy Lister 2016

    Hope I've followed the rules.

If I'd gone 4-3-3 I'd bring in Cal Gal for 2021 as Dycey was playing for Livingston in 2013 and with a temporary transfer,  he's miles  better than Buchanan!

    Tough task .

I saw this on the Queen of the South thread and wondered what an Airdrie equivalent would look like. It really makes you appreciate the last couple of years but I think this is the best I can come up with. Low points are 2013, 2016 and 2018 which didn’t really have any vintage performers.

    Parry (2016)

    Stewart (2018)
    Crighton (2019)
    Fordyce (2020)
    P Boyle (2014)

    Turner (2021)
    Docherty (2015)
    Easton (2022)

    J Boyle (2013)
    Gallagher (2023)
    Ryan (2017)

That's a fair effort and well balanced attacking side. I'll need a lot of time to look back over those seasons if I'm to make any other suggestions.

Utter respect to the younger fans, you have earned this. I started following the club around 1970, and had the joy of a great team to follow in the 70's a Cup Final, a Texaco Cup Final and a Spring Cup win. We had a spell in the top flight in the 80's and then the great 90's with 2 Cup Finals, and a  jaunt into Europe.

I think that those memories and the joy I got from them helped me through some grim times this century. Last Saturday was a return to those great days, with an evening of sheer joy.

So what about next season, we have just spent 210 minutes against a team that is weaker than any we face next season, and we couldn't beat them in regulation time, not good. However, anyone who followed the team through the entire season will have seen dramatic improvement in a number pf players abilities through the season, so the coaching is good. We have also seen improvement in Rhys' management of the games, so management is improving. If both can carry on improving, then we have every chance. I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Much as I agree with your post, can I gently point out that we did beat Hamilton in regulation time in the first leg. It's difficult to judge future prospects against other Championship sides on the basis of this play off format, but I'm looking forward to next season.

  10. Just finished a promotion curry for the first time in so many years.

Yes it was tight and nervy as Hamilton edged ahead and it was a delight to see Gabby rescue the aggregate draw.

Who could ever relax at a penalty shoot out but praise to all the scorers and the Rae save made it oh so sweet.

That opening day at Peterhead has been topped by leaving L1 at last.

Well done Rhys and the squad and the travelling support today. Now off to watch the highlights.

    Roll on the Championship.

  11. Overall an even game and I'll take that win as the basis for a better performance on Saturday.

I believe that's the first home win in a playoff final so I remain relaxed.

Thought the Ref was honking bit some of our players have to be a but braver in Hamilton. Connor Smith was a threat so our right back will need to be more astute than Janny.

    Might watch the recording tomorrow.

Holy f**k Falkirk have fallen to become that much of a joke club that even Newco Airdrie fans are giving them wee pats on the head like this.

Having suffered 7 goal defeats at Firhill, Arbroath and even Cliftonhill ( and an 8 there) I stayed to the end each time as scarpering is the cowards way. I was not patronising those who stayed to support their side and in many ways it's many of those Falkirk players last night who should depart the scene.

  13. Posting before catching up on earlier pages.

That was an amazing opening spell and indeed first half for Airdrie. Falkirk appeared to be going for long balls to a front two but this led to Airdrie simply playing through the wide open spaces. Clearly a first goal matters and that was a super strike. It let Airdrie dominate although even I was surprised at the calamitous defending for the second/third goal. Corners have rarely worked for us but to see Gallagher and McGill being outscored by Dycey and ATS , was a delight.

Even at 5 up I still had that dodgy feeling it could go wrong. Enter Josh Rae to let the Falkirk side back into the match. We've learned from earlier disasters and managed it better. Was delighted to see Jordan help us out and that penalty calmness was a relief.

Praise to the Falkirk fans who stayed to back their team and the match is not over yet.

    Phew!

  14. I have no idea what teams will get through these semi finals but I desperately hope Hamilton are not one of them. Could Alloa do a Queens Park? Can Airdrie finally escape these play off dramas with promotion? Are Falkirk destined to be still the best attended League 1 club? All to play for and after some digital trials, I have my ticket.

    Obviously C'mon the Diamonds!
