  1. 5-3 is a good score from 4-0 down. I'm sure at the mid session Wilson would have targetted 5-3. Hard to say who will feel the better of the two, probably Wilson.

I'm hoping for a Higgins-Williams final if only for nostalgic reasons. Am i right in thinking that if Higgins wins, he'll be the first to win a title 20 years after his first win?

Absolutely, no-one would really come close. Ray Reardon and Steve Davis' titles was 8 years between first and last. Stephen Hendry's was 9 years between first and last. Alex Higgins 10 years between first and last. Ronnie 0'Sullivan is 12 years between first and most recent.

Worth pointing out that it's a record Higgins already holds at 13 years between his first and most recent anyway and if Mark Williams wins that record will stretch to 18 years.

Even Joe Davis' 15 World titles (then on a challenge basis so that should be disregarded) were within a 19 year period. The other ones similar John Pulman 11 years between first and last and Fred Davis was 8 years between first and last. Not usually considered in records due to the challenge based World Championship.

Currently listening to the Who Are Ya? podcast, where the presenters visit a club for a day to find out about them (though heavily weighted to English fitba), and the excellent Ear Hustle from inmates in San Quentin jail.

Giving Ear Hustle a wee go just now.

Adam Buxton’s latest guest is Bob Mortimer and, predictably enough, is the best present you can give your ears this week.

    I absolutely concur.

  5. The timing of going up gears at 11-9 from John Higgins was exceptional, as was his shot making at this stage. Fantastic match, best of the tournament yet.

I've always found myself favouring John Higgins throughout his career, but any of the 4 winning this would be a great story. I think if Kyren Wilson can win the tournament he'll start picking up major titles regularly, he's the most complete of all the players establishing themselves, he's got everything. I hope he wins it this year.

Fair play, he's been the best player in the tournament. Still hope he loses. Both semis look to be boringly one-sided.

Both look like 50/50 games to me.

Why do folk not like Carter?

Me and him (and a few others I guess) suffer from crohn's disease - and therefore I've always felt a connection. He also overcame cancer (I think).

    Why the hate?

My wife suffers from Crohn's Disease also, she's in a particularly bad flare up at the minute actually. Of the 32 players at the crucible this year, 2 suffer from Crohn's Disease. Ali Carter and Liam Highfield.

I really liked Carter's interview before the O'Sullivan match, he was really pumped up about it. Great to see him win.

  8. My eldest was buzzing today. At Montrose to watch his uncle clinch the league title and got taken on the pitch. He described the day as "his best ever" he's only 5 but those words were unexpectedly emotional to me.

He's getting brought up going to Pars games but maybe today will stick with him.

I was delighted that Thorne got the boot. The rest, I'm fine with but the recent additions on BBC are improving it somewhat. Hendry and McManus particularly.

I don't watch it on Eurosport. At all. I just don't like it. No particular reason.

I'll normally favour Eurosport coverage. It depends if Joe Johnson is commentating, I think he's terrible; worse than Thorne.

Neal Foulds is particularly good. Jimmy White is also a very good pundit, but you'll have to stomach his dodgy wig and leather jacket.

I'm surprised how excellent a pundit Ronnie O'Sullivan is and usually joins the studio crew when he gets papped out a tournament with a few days to spare. Eurosport are very good at pre-match interviews, less formal than the BBC.

  10. I could listen to Alan McManus all day.

Could be a changing of the guards for BBC Snooker commentary. McManus, Hendry and Steve Davis are fantastic. As are Dave Hendon and Neal Foulds on Eurosport. Could do without John Virgo and Joe Johnson.

  11. On the train to Charing Cross from West Lothian. I buy my ticket from the ticket inspector on the train. He hands me my tickets telling me he split it so I've a return to Queen Street and then a return between there and Charing Cross saving me £4.

Just if you ever need the definition of a "gid c**t".

I can top that. Sitting having a discussion about countries and she was adamant that turkey was close to africa. So we get the bairns atlas out to show her it’s closer to the middle east.

Then she sees egypt on the map, and says “egypts not in africa” this is despite having a map infront on her, it written in black and white and having being published in all the atlases ever, Yet she wasn’t having it.

I see your point, but Turkey is fairly close to Africa. I wouldn't fancy swimming it but it's only about 300 miles across the Mediterranean Sea from the coast of northern Africa.

  13. I can't remember how it worked now. I think I sat in the correct seat till the first mid-session interval, then sat nearer the back where I could see both tables. The crucible is fairly steep seating so when you are up the back movement isn't so much of an issue.

You do get to move around between frames depending where you are in the theatre, obviously if you are front and centre then you cannot move unless play has stopped on both tables which is unlikely to happen often, and in any case you could watch both tables from there.

  14. Few interesting ones. You could argue that with McGill v Day the qualifier is probably edging it as favourite.

I like Lyu Haotian to beat Marco Fu. Haotian was very good in the qualifiers and Fu has had laser eye treatment mid-season and hasn't played a tournament since the Masters in early January where he got horsed 6-0 by O'Sullivan in the first round.

I'm going to stick on a wee coupon later of the qualifiers I think that will get through their ties. Haotian, Lisowski, Dott and Day is paying 21.15/1 on bet365.

  15. Adults in replica shirts is cringeworthy unless playing 5s.

No long now. We've never had a TV in our bedroom before but the wife bought one at the weekend to avoid the two and a half weeks of snooker.

World Snooker doing decent coverage of the final round of qualifiers yesterday and today, Graeme Dott currently in a right battle to qualify with Mike Dunn -

I’ve only watched one Simon ferry interview but quite enjoyed it.
The graham hunter podcasts started to do my tits in. I find him very sycophantic. They’ve agreed to the interview, just relax and chat man!

I agree with Graham Hunter being very sycophantic, regularly to the point of cringeworthy. If you get by him being a bit of a tit he asks good provoking questions.

  17. Athletico Mince is my favourite podcast. The South Africa stories make me cry laughing on the train. Fuckin' gang bangers.....you gotta love them!

I've just started listening to Simon Ferry's Open Goal, it seems good enough. I like football insight from players, he tries to focus on the funny stories.

I also like Graham Hunter's Big Interview though I like listening to the older players interviews; Gianluca Vialli's interview was excellent as was Joe Jordan but the Steve Archibald interviews were the best by a long shot. Where as I got a bit bored of the recent Ledley King and Jermaine Defoe ones.

I also enjoy the Snooker Scene podcast; but if you're not a hardened snooker fan it's not for you.

Do they normally have any returns? We are in Sheffield for two nights so was wondering if it was worth chancing my arm to see if I could get a ticket for another session while I'm there?

Yeah, a couple of folk I know went down last year without any tickets for any sessions, they were just wanting to bne in and around the crucible and winter gardens during the championship but they managed to get tickets for a few sessions when down there. I think they are planning on doing the same this year. Even if you don't, there is much more going on around the venue than a normal event.

As long as it's around the first round, maybe even into the second you will probably be able to pick up a couple tickets for another session.

This year the tickets for 2019 will go on sale in the crucible box office desk on the first day of the final if you are still down when that happens. The first day it is only the crucible box office desk and in person, the second day of the final is when it is opened up to online and phone bookings.

I'm actually going this year, never been before so quite excited. Think I only have Table Two tickets though so will probably get some boring dross like Dott vs Ebdon.

Lucky beggars, I've been before. I found in the early rounds there was space enough that you could nip into the seats near the partition up towards the back and you could see both tables. So you could maybe try that.

You'll be taken aback by the size of the place. It is very small and tight. In and around the venue is buzzing during the championship. Enjoy.
