  1. I had hoped that we'd have used the Dundee United and Inverness cup games to try out some different formations (4-1-4-1 or 4-3-2-1 probably but maybe also 3 at the back) but instead we've used this open 4-4-2 with no plan B whatsoever and we still haven't learned a thing. There must also be questions asked about his signings. Why no right back? Why only one central midfielder when Falkingham and Graham left (and allowing Spence to go out on loan) when we're moving up a league and not going to be able to dominate possession like we did last season. People groaned when we were linked with Jim Goodwin pre-season before he joined Alloa but he's exactly what we're missing right now IMO.

Yes I've posted a few about this on the 'Gordon Strachan' topic. You are allowed 12 on the bench. Couldn't get my head round this either. Strachan said he wasn't experienced enough for this match!  (McGinn who came on, is?)  Starts him in the previous two very important matches, then leaves him out of the 12 subs named. Subs bench included two sub goalies. When was the last time and how many times has a team at any level required to use 3 goalies in the same match? Hamilton is also experienced?

I know McKay was ok to leave but not sure about Naismith but Burke was in the stand.

Burke's boss has phoned Strachan asking him the reason he wasn't in at least the 12 subs when he started the previous two. He phoned as he couldn't understand it either. Obviously like me, was there another reason? Also he was unhappy that Burke like McKay wasn't allowed to return to his club early. Wish I knew what was said. I hope Strachan had a good answer and not sarcastic one!!

Imo there is certainly another reason and nothing to do with lack of experience.

Think there's some sort of rule about needing to have three keepers in a matchday squad and that the keepers need to be actual goalkeepers and not outfield players in a goalie top (North Korea tried to only name 2 for the World Cup I think, then tried to name a striker as their third choice but they were denied on both scores). Other than that though, you're right. I think Burke was with the squad in Slovakia though, as his tweet, later deleted, would seem to suggest.

Not really. We will win all home games, one with bonus point. Pick up 1 away victory and a losing away bonus point.... we qualify

When you put it like that it all sounds so simple...

  4. Still an incredibly tough ask to qualify with this group (surely they need to look at expansion or a round for runners up or something?) but a great performance. I'd have probably given Pyrgios the man of the match award to be honest but Sarto was good too.

  5. While I get your point about the positions having nothing to do with anything (and I think there's a rule about having three keepers in the squad anyway so that's redundant), surely it shows that he was still going to have players (like a third goalie or a third left back ) who were never going to play and so it makes even less sense to just stick him on the bench in a tracksuit.

  6. You'd have to think that having to either uproot a young family or travel 100 miles or so each day for training would require either a big step up or a significant increase in wages. Is going from Under-20's Manager and First Team Coach to Assistant Manager that big a step up? Would St Mirren be able to give a big wage hike? I'm not sure this will happen but if he does go then I wish him well.

  7. What time is kick off? Is it clashing with a Challenge Cup game or something? It's a shame that one of the games fans will find it hardest to go to won't be shown live now (unless it's elsewhere - online or via Italian TV maybe?).

  8. Heading down to Ayr today where the old fashioned nature of Somerset (which I enjoy) means nipping to the loo which is just a space between the two turnstiles with a trough to pee into (at least it's not just the wall as it used to be at many grounds and might still be at Cappilow?). I think female toilets were an afterthought for many years and there are not portaloos once you get into the ground.

  9. Glasgow has a nice new velodrome and is hosting or has hosted world or European championship Gymnastics, Track Cycling, Swimming and will be hosting the first edition of the European Sports Championships (the athletics are being held in Berlin and Glasgow will host the aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, and a new team golf championship) so the sporting legacy is strong. I'm sure it made the city money too.

  10. Scenes at the Sant'Elia as Sampdoria score at last through Fernandes to equalise against Cagliari in the 85th minute, only for Viviani (surely the only keeper who wears the number 2 jersey) to fluff a clearance and allow Melchiorri an empty net from 20 yards 2 minutes later. Been a decent game this between 2 struggling sides.

    According to the SFL Review.

    Coincided with promotion, tbf.

A few quid, fair enough - doubling the price?

The old SFL review books were great. My local library had a huge selection of old reviews in there and I used to occasionally get one out to have a wee shifty at old squad lists and ponder stupid little details like why someone started off the season wearing the number 6 shirt then switched to a number 4 in November.

  12. As one of the old fashioned types who likes to avoid the English results, I don't tend to listen to Sportsound on a Saturday now as they keep giving you the English scores during the game. I know many people want to know the scores and I'm a bit of an oddbod that way but it's still an example of BBC Scotland giving more of a damn about the game down south than up here. Especially when you have RG saying things like "we're just trying to get that score confirmed" yet being able to tell you the scorer and how many goals he's scored as soon as it goes in.

  13. Under pressure Milan at home to Lazio tonight, still 0-0 but Lazio look to have made a bright start.

Do Milan always wear Champions League strips btw, even though they're not in the Champions League? Just saw a close up on Suso and his shirt had the 7-time winners patch on his arm. I'd have thought they'd need to have Serie A patches for sponsorship reasons etc? Or have they got that on the other arm? Seems a bit bizarre and a bit of a minter for Milan, to use P&B parlance.

  14. Been to Italy lots, especially in the North

    - Verona is lovely, and there's obviously the Lakes in that area too. Just south of Lake Garda is Valeggio sul Minco which is a beautiful little village on the river and home to a pasta festival and there is a botanical gardens at Parca Sigurta and a waterpark nearby too. There is also Mantua which is nice and has three lakes and an old city centre.

    - in you're heading further west then Bergamo is worth looking around. There's an old town at top of a funicular railway and lots of nice old buildings. Loads of great restaurants there too but they serve polenta as the starch which I don't particularly enjoy.

    - in Tuscany, if you want an alternative to Florence and Pisa the there's Lucca or (if you have a car) Montecatini Terme. I'm sure you'll enjoy wherever you end up though.
