I mean I do get the argument that if you want to shoot at person A but you miss and kill person B then that is culpable homicide rather than murder because you had no intention to kill person B but that is not what the law in Scotland says and the law in Norn Iron probably follows similar lines.

The distinction between murder and culpable homicide can be fuzzy at best and the fact there is a distinction is probably a hangover from murder automatically being a capital offence.

They shot indiscriminately at a group of people and killed one of those persons

He isn't actually required for Scotland.  There's a far superior, more experienced left back looking to win the Barclays in a few weeks.

Tierney can do what he wants regarding Scotland, I certainly don't lose sleep over it.

he was required when shinnie allowed the kazak winger in behind to finish us off

Gordon’s was pretty shite as well and it’s not exactly something McGregor was known for either.

I’ll admit I haven’t seen him play in a while but I don’t know why he’s dropped out the equation so quickly. He was always solid enough and is still playing regularly for Hull (the team that let go of McGregor).

I’d be absolutely astonished if Marshall was no longer a better keeper than Bain.

    Bain is awful

    Marshall should be no 1

I was open about at the time and the reasons for doing so.  I have also on various occasions admitted that it was a stupid thing to do regardless of the reasons for doing it.  There’s a couple of posters who mention it as a personal dig without mentioning the context but hey ho.

I think there are many Leave voters who would now vote Remain.

I don’t get the argument that it was a democratic vote 2 years ago when people didn’t understand the implications but it would be an undemocratic vote now when people do understand the implications.

The reason I don’t get the argument is, of course, because it’s bullshit.

Not a single person who voted leave thought that it would mean this kind of leave

Sue Barker is moaning that the umpire applied the rules absolutely to the letter. Isn't that his job?

This is really starting to annoy me. The coach has admitted he was coaching. Williams smashed her racquet. Williams verbally abused the umpire. Why is this somehow the fault of the umpire for applying the rules?

    It's not

It's the fault of Serena Williams and her coach

The act was shameful enough and now she has shamefully created a gigantic smokescreen using her celebrity status

No one is willing to go against the grain and call her out on her obviously shameful behaviour, they would be branded sexist too

No apology to her opponent who was reduced to tears in her victory presentation, never seen such a thing before

    Disgrace

    Many backing her.

Sue Barker on the BBC website saying Serena "has a point" on the sexism claim and that the solution to Ramos "doing it by the book" is that "sometimes the rulebook has to be rewritten". She also says coaching will have to be allowed, rather than punished, plus game concessions should only be given by the tournament supervisor (who of course won't have been present when an incident occurs other than by chance through most of a competition).

You've also got Marion Bartolli saying his decision was "totally not acceptable", and calling for him to be sanctioned as Williams didn't "curse or give verbal abuse" (?) especially when men "never get a warning for saying things that are 10 times worse" (except Ramos regularly does exactly that)...

Chris Evert thinks she only went "a little too far but had every right to say it" - and Ramos should have "given her a break due to the enormity of the moment".

    Basically... it's the umpire's fault.

    Sue Barker is talking bilge

You can't very well call the umpire a thief and expect to get away with it.

That said, there's a completely different tone in the coverage of Serena's "meltdown" to McInroe, or to baseball ejections, for example.  You also don't get any of the, "ah well, but it least she proves she cares"  reaction which happens regularly to excuse male athletes (red cards in football being a very obvious example).  Look at how the BBC report talks of Williams' "maternal instinct" kicking in during the prize giving ceremony.

It seems to me to be that there are two issues at play here, one to do with enforcing the rules of tennis, and the other to do with the implied double standards in the media coverage.

Framing the whole thing as Serena vs the umpire misses part of that, I feel.

You're feeding into her bullshit excuses for her disgraceful behaviour

Watched the highlights of this earlier from the point of her being penalised a point after reading about it this morning.

Williams was bang out of order the entire way through it with the way she was acting. The point where she said "you'll never umpire me again as long as you live" was a personal highlight. It was disappointing that the commentators couldn't bring themselves to really condemn Williams for her behaviour.

Good on the umpire, and good on Osaka for keeping her concentration through the entire farce and getting the job done.

    The commentators, journalists, past players

None of them can bring themselves to say it as it is

    She's a disgrace

Just want to point out we beat the Bosnians but then lost to Cypriots who then got through the play-off round and made the Europa Groups. They drew 3 and lost 3, taking points of each of Lyon, Atalanta & Everton.

Previous season we lost to Maribor who made the CL groups this season. We'd beaten Rjeka the round before who beat AC Milan 2 weeks ago. Was very disappointed losing to Maribor.

Before that it was Kairat from Kazakhstan when we made an arse of it.

And before that, we were knocked out by Real Sociedad after knocking out Groningen (who later that season won the Dutch Cup).

3rd Qualifying Round each of the last 4 seasons, being knocked out by fairly decent teams but also knocking out teams who were much favoured over us on the way.

that Rijeka results almost as good as when you beat Bayern Munich, eh

Law never won the Ballon d'or. That would be the world footballer of the year. He did win the European award though. He was world class though. Judging by the many youtube clips I've seen of him in his pomp, he was pretty unplayable.

Alan Hutton has been the closest thing we've had to a world class player of late. Before he endured his series of awful injuries (various breakages and ligament damage) he was on his way to becoming one of the very top full backs in Europe. Against Italy in 2007 the reigning world champions made two substitutions and a further tactical change to try and stop him bombing forward. They couldn't. He moved to Spurs the following January, got injured in April, and then kept getting periodically injured for the next few years and just never came back the same player. Truly heartbreaking.

so he never got to world class, or anywhere near it?

  11. when Darren Fletcher was at his height playing in European Cup finals and dominating the holding role , he was world class

didn't last long, season or two before form began to slide with stomach injuries

before that Lambert in same role for 1 season at Dortmund, he was playing that role at world class level

last world class attacking player must be Dalglish?

Quite like the look of Barnsley at home to Birmingham today @ 7/5.

Birmingham have lost 6 of their 7 away games this season (the other was a draw with Derby) and looks like they have a few players missing through injury for today's game as well. Barnsley haven't started brilliantly but picked up a good win away to Burton midweek so hopefully that gives them a bit of a confidence boost.

I put money on that today

did it as a double with Montrose away at cowdenbeath

    cheers :thumsup2

I like dunfermline at 9/5 with ladbrokes and think they will have too much firepower for Falkirk.  Also like Montrose at just under even s away to Cowden and stenny same price roughly at home to clyde thoughts peeps? ?

think Cowden haven't scored a goal from open play in 10 1/2 hours of football

I fancy anyone against them at anytime
