  1. Players clipping the ball aimlessly forward as soon as they got it. Like watching a team of Gary Irvines.

Michael O'Halloran not making the ball stick up front? No shit. Not really his fault, though. And he was never getting in behind.

No power left in May. Brown a Championship player.

Positives: Bryson busy as usual. Booth had a good first five  minutes. Thought Viv was lively and tried to make things happen without it ever looking likely (no space to work with, and not enough guile in the team generally).

County well worth the win, and Saints look like a team destined to lose a lot more games by a single goal if nothing changes.

I don't think changing formation matters much anymore tbh.

We'd still be playing the same aimless style with the same shit players in attack.

Don't necessarily disagree with that, but we might as well be off the pace in January having tried something different with those players - albeit a slight formation tweak isn't hugely revolutionary.

Any early thoughts or rumours about who we could go for in January (other than Walker)? I can't see Davidson taking any more punts on unknown overseas players at such a critical time. A striker who can carve out their own opportunities would be ideal - especially if we struggle to add genuine creativity in Wotherspoon's absence. Hoping Butterfield isn't another 'brilliant in 2010' signing and shows he can add that bit of quality to our midfield.

What a player he was, by the way.

On a related note, I think Melamed's introduction helped us massively last season. He had the knack of getting into positions and scoring goals against the diddies, turning those frustrating 0-0s and 1-1s into positive results and helping enable our resurgence (or at least that's how I remember it - clearly there were other factors too). Doesn't feel like that's going to happen this season :(

Glad he's finally called Jacob Brown up, I've been banging on about him for years.

I feel as though I've heard of Jacob Brown, but that might be because he has the most Championship-sounding name imaginable (happy to hear alternative suggestions).

A few parallels to be drawn between ourselves and Chelsea this season, I reckon. Obviously we play a superior  standard of football, but it’s the same set-up, same formation, difficult for ‘better teams’ to break us down, and both teams have a massive goal virgin leading the line.

I pitched this thesis to some friends after the Champions League final, but they weren't interested. I think it fell down on Hibs = Man City.

  6. Out of Bryson and Conway, I doubt many would have picked the thrice-capped former Derby ace as the one to get the new deal. Not until a few weeks ago, anyway. I still feel his lack of acceleration gets shown up at times (eg on one occasion yesterday when he let the ball run across him in midfield), but he's neat and tidy with the ball and I don't begrudge him another year.

Melamed's influence has waned recently, but he offers something different and I'd love him to stay. Still feel he can be a regular chance-getter and goalscorer – particularly against the diddy teams.

  7. Mannus was solid. Did he produce the moments of wonder we saw from the mercurial Enckelman? No. Did he chuck the ball in the net? Not really. He knew his strengths and limitations, and has to be up there with our best ever keepers based in large part on his consistency and reliability (and physique). I'll always have more of a soft spot for the likes of Enckelman and 90s Main, though.

Before the game would I have taken any St Johnstone players over our players? No. Think it’s fare to back your own players

This was the only bit that raised an eyebrow from my perspective. I see where you're coming from regarding backing your own team, but I doubt David Martindale would turn his nose up at Ali McCann, for example.

Congrats to the St Johnstone boys on here, I’ve purposely stayed off here because I’m not gonna lie it hurt a lot watching that yesterday.

We spoke about it today though, that was just as hard lol.

    Can listen here - https://talklivipodcast.libsyn.com

Again to reiterate, my genuine congratulations to you lads, a thoroughly deserved win, as hard as that is to say. Still gutted.

Enjoyed listening to that (and not simply to revel in others' misery).

I'd 100% keep him, purely because he scored goals and offers something different to the team. Do I think he'll stay, I'm not convinced. I suspect he's missing him family and maybe feels that Davidson is still not 100% trusting him. I think he'll play in almost all the games from now until the end of the season, I also think he'll score goals. But there's a part of me that hopes if the world opens up again and he's able to get his family, etc. across to visit him, he might get a little happier. It's a really tough situation for him and the club and I'm sure that no matter what the club will do the right thing by him, especially if he wants to go, it would be with our blessing and thanks.

It must be pretty gutting not to get a single minute of the semi-final or final after being such a big part of the team's recent upturn in league form. (That's not a dig at Davidson, as clearly his decisions paid off big time.)

I'd like to see Melamed stick around – I enjoy watching him and he offers something different from our other forwards.
