    Think this Euro’s performance will define the Clarke era. He has been a good Scotland manager but failure to get through the groups here and it’s tough to say his tenure has been a success. If we don’t get through it will be multiple instances of falling short of achieving anything substantial like making the last 16 of the euros or making a World Cup. Get through here and it will be a proper achievement.

    Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland have all made it out the groups at a Euros in the last decade. If he were to have two attempts and not achieve the same it would be pretty poor. We have been more consistent but achieved nothing yet that is beyond our capabilities. It seems a bit arbitrary that three games can define so many years but that’s just the nature of international management

    don't agree. His time has undoubtedly been a success - two qualifications after years in the wilderness. I was critical of Clarke going into the the Euros and immediately afterwards (inc our abject WC qualifying play-off) as we were still really disjointed on the park and I didn't think he was getting the best out a talented group of players at his disposal. However a second successive qualification, numerous fantastic performances inc Spain at home, and even barring last night's late collapse, some of the football we were playing, away to the Netherlands it should be noted, was really top drawer stuff. I

    If you consider everything, and particularly our record since 1998, he has undoubtedly been a success - that stands regardless as to whether we make it past the group stages or not in the summer.  When he does decide to pack up and perhaps a return to club management, I believe the calibre of clubs approaching him will be testament to that. I doubt he will elect to go Birmingham City.

    Holland are nowhere near a top tier national side. If they can beat us 4-0, the likes of Hungary will be fancying their chances of doing the same.

    "no where near" a top tier national side if you just ignore inconveniences like results, tournament records and rankings.....

  3. A more nuanced assessment to perhaps take away would be overall a fantastic performance away to a top team but a bad result in the end.

    - Shankland did well and don't think there would have been much difference in terms of team performance if that had been Dykes or Adams;

    - Shankland's miss was a one on one, which you would have expected to him to score - hardly a "shocker" or a "sitter" as it has been described;

    - if we play like we did for 75 mins, and we take any of the Christie, McGinn, McTominay or Shankland chances - which based on previous performances and goal tallies is likely - we will do well in our group games;

    When you see stuff like "reality check" etc getting banded ahead of us going to our second successive Euros, you just wonder where folks have been for the past 20 odd years......

    I don't really like the term "soccer", but at least it's better than "footy", which can get in the bin.

    "footy" is mainly the sole preserve of those who happily use terms like "pen" and "lino". They also invariably think that any ex footballer with a nickname (ie just adding a y" to the surname) is hilarious with their "bantz" which is largely derived from tales of dressing room japes and training ground bust-ups. The use of "mate" is a core part of their lexicon.

    The absolute fucking state of Adidas. The only consolation is that we've not got the worst of their 2024 kits. They all look like cheap training kits. Imagine us in an Oor Willie kit

    "footy". But I like the Belgian one if that is indeed it. On the whole, the Belgium national team have great kits....

    I haven't seen very much of Hardie. I watched Argyle's FA Cup match against Leeds Utd - he didn't stand out to me. I think his name will be on a list somewhere, but not necessarily high up on it. Clearly he's adapted to life in the English Championship since promotion from League One last year.

    At the moment personally it's a case of not having seen enough of the guy play, so I don't have a strong opinion either way. I'm not planning to watch Argyle any time soon either, so it'll just be a case of keeping an eye on his stats - which at the moment aren't bad, but again don't really scream out that he needs to be on the plane.

    Shite for Brown that it's injury that is almost certainly going to rule him out of the Euros.

    On the other hand it's hardly awful that it has probably secured Shankland's place in the squad (assuming he continues his current form).

    But zooming out a bit, it's got to be a concern how thin we now are up top. Beyond Dykes, Adams and Shankland, who is there? With Nisbet, Brown and Stewart are all medium term crocked, we might be in a bit of a pickle if injury strikes any of those three.

    Christie can do a job up front. There has been discussion on here re McTominay or Ferguson playing there. Not sure how Burke is doing, but he might be a potential sticking plaster backup.

    Am I missing someone else who might be able to play the Scotland forward role?

    Edit: forgot about Tommy Conway, though I'm not sure he's at all ready for a full cap let alone a finals squad inclusion.

    can also put Ryan Hardie in the Conway camp.

    I was surprised to read that the cat was bookies favourite to win on Thursday but it is apparently true.

    I assumed that the Labour boy would still win despite (or actually helped by) being dumped by the party.

    yeh also saw that in a Guardian article and surprised to see he as anything but a complete no hoper ala his London mayoral campaign.

    Just shows that if you are in the grift for the long haul it will eventually pay off.

  9. Finding it increasingly difficult to open things. The top items for me are:

    - Mouthwash

    - Little sachets of coffee or milk in hotel rooms despite tearing at the "perforated"/open part

    - little sauce packets in pubs

    - razor packs that use that see through plastic coating on the front - anything that comes with that plastic coating

    Loads more that I will remember when I next struggle with them. Sometimes a minor irritant - a petty thing getting on my nerves. Other days throws me into a full blown rage.....

    Stormed the office :D

    a mob. Honestly - I know opinion on Sweeney is split and he can utter nonsense on account that he feels his tenuous Clyde/shipbuilding links give him a unique perspective and solidarity with the working man. This plus the fact he was claiming Universal Credit when he got punted as an MP, though you would question his need for doing so on the basis it seemed a comms exercise.

    However, his stuff on Glasgow redevelopment is really good and he takes a genuine interest in seeking to maintain old Glasgow buildings, support sustainable redevelopment, and never seems partisan about his pursuit of this (would be difficult to do I guess as Labour in GCC are responsible for the majority of the rot of many a once great building).

    But the above just shows him as a shameless Labour careerist, towing the party line, blurring lines between lies and misrepresentation to justify the deceitfulness of the party head. With Sweeney and many Scottish Labour MSPs/MPs it is Labour first, Westminster second with constituents and Scotland appearing way down their list of priorities.

    All the news outlets punting this "MPs lives were under threat" line to absolve Hoyle of his dropped bollock.

    I mean, if it were "that" vital, why the f**k did it take Labour until just after the SNP raised a motion to think that their stance on Gaza was a touch worrying.

    Its utter pish.

    Ayr folk aren't happy again.

    Furious Ayr residents force South Ayrshire Council to return pavement to original size after traffic chaos on main road

    Council chiefs have been forced to return a pavement to its original size at a new housing estate after being blasted by residents over traffic chaos.

    Bosses have vowed to reinstate the walkway on Mainholm Road, Ayr after it was widened as part of a development at the site of the former Mainholm Academy.

    intrigued by the article and it was inevitably about parking. Bingo parking article points for use of:

    - "nightmare";

    - "bottleneck";

    - "disaster waiting to happen".

    No, I'm not blinded. What you mean is you don't agree. That's fine, you don't have to. I'm comfortable with my opinion and think Steve Clarke probably agrees.

    Shankland has scored 17 goals in the Scottish Premiership this season. Van Basten he is not.

    The level of opposition is incredibly important. Its immeasurably harder playing against Chelsea than Ross County.

    I find it strange you seem genuinely angry I would take Brown over Shankland. Are you Lawrence Shankland?

    angry 🤣. Straight in with the old "ragin", "seethin" response. Says it all but at least Clarke agrees with you. Okay fella 😂
