  1. Yep, up against a much better team than he faced with us but I’m sure he’ll improve and be fine. It does seem very unlikely he ends up back here so hope he kicks on and does well.
  2. Admittedly they’re playing Rangers but sounds like Megwa’s having a tough night for Hibs. Bring him home!
  3. Hearts game confirmed for 5pm on the Sunday. A strange kick off time but probably a better crowd than we’d get on a Monday night.
  4. I think pretty much all of those were caretakers and got the job out of good runs (Robson), being the easy option or both, weren’t they? As you say that shouldn’t make them better qualified than someone with a short but successful CV but that’s the way it seems to work. I think there’s a couple of things with McCabe that clubs might question, rightly or wrongly. Will a bigger club want to take a risk on appointing a 31 year old manager who beyond the first few years of his career hasn’t actually played much above Scottish Championship level. This is more on McCabe’s (and Fordyce’s I suppose) end but when will they be ready to give up playing? McCabe knows when to take himself out the team but he’s currently playing a vital role in the team and Fordyce just loves defending and I can’t imagine he’s keen to stop playing anytime soon. Clubs will certainly have their eye on him but I do find it hard to tell when they’ll move on. It’s quite a unique situation these days, not much we can use as a comparison.
  5. It’s a tough draw but an exciting one. Hopefully goes a bit better than the trip through there a few years ago!
  6. They both scream Dunfermline given how much McPake loves signing Dundee players. I’m not expecting too much more business but another defender (either a right back or centre back) and a forward (ideally someone who can play out wide) would do me.
  7. 2008/09 apparently. We beat Cove and Spartans at home before losing to Dunfermline in the last 16, a game I can’t remember at all. This is only the third time we’ve done it since 2002.
  8. On this, I think there’s a wider point of our team mostly being made up of young players or guys whose careers have been going nowhere. Telfer, Frizzell and Watson were all doing ok at best in League One and we’re now getting very good performances from them against much better opposition. McCabe, Fordyce, and I suppose Gallagher as well, are all guys who struggled a bit at this level previously too. That’s alongside getting really good performances from young players and ATS who broadly fits into the above categories. We don’t have the budget to compete with the teams around us for most players so we have to be a bit more creative with our recruitment. It’s a real sign of great coaching to be able to identify players other clubs aren’t going for, improve both young and experienced players and to get this level of performance from them.
  9. Was thinking about this during the game today. The amount of big home games we’ve won over the last few years is ridiculous compared to the decade or so before it. Can add today, Partick Thistle and both Raith games to the list above. It’s great having a very likeable team doing all of this too.
  10. Great win and as others have said, pretty comfortable in the end. Airdrie edged the first half and as soon as we scored St. Johnstone seemed done. Other than Carey having one or two moments they offered nothing in the final third. Kimpioka was a good laugh. Quick, strong and absolutely hopeless on the ball, he screams future Vanarama superstar. Frizzell and Telfer the standouts for Airdrie. I particularly enjoyed Telfer’s run down the right in the second half which had some incredible one touch passing from four or five players. I thought Franczak had a decent enough game at right wing back for St. Johnstone and was surprised they took him off. He was a bit wasted when St. Johnstone changed to a diamond but he’s surely a better attacking option than McGowan? Shout out to David Hutton for waiting until Mitov was about to collect the ball before blootering it right across the pitch.
  11. Really enjoyable first half. The game’s been played at a much higher tempo than I expected. Not too much between the teams so far but Airdrie edging it with Frizzell the standout. I think we’ll miss McGill’s running this half, he was getting some joy in behind (without actually doing too much) and as much as I love Gallagher he can’t offer that as much.
  12. McStravick was described like that when he joined so maybe we’re just building a team of Frizzell’s. I’ve seen Airdrie teams built in worse ways to be fair. It’s always hard to tell with loanees but hopefully he’s more of a Megwa/Aiken than a Wylie. We definitely needed another midfielder in if Aiken is going to be out for a while, and even if McCabe has to drop back into defence with Megwa away, so seems a sensible signing all round.
  13. That’s it confirmed. Doesn’t sound like there’s much chance of him returning either.
  14. I think we had a home game against Dunfermline postponed for that last season but it’s very much a rarity. Forecast looks a bit warmer on Friday and Saturday as you say so fingers crossed it’s fine. Strange game this, probably a draw neither team were too excited about. We have a very good home record, particularly against Premiership teams recently, comfortably beating Motherwell and St. Mirren in the last couple of years with a narrow win over Dundee and an extra-time defeat to Ross County this season too. St. Johnstone have improved under Levein but seem to have had a pretty poor cup record since winning the double. Hopefully Megwa is back with us for this game. We can get by without him but it does mean McCabe dropping back or ATS coming back in for the first time in about six weeks, neither of which are ideal. Can’t say I’m confident we’ll win but we’re on a good run at the moment so I’m expecting a tough game.
  15. Possibly yeah, I think Ali McCann is a good comparison actually. He’s been out for a few months now but he was generally the middle man in a three with McCabe/McMaster sitting deep, Frizzell much further forward as the creative player and Aiken going between. I thought his ball-winning stats would be better but for me his best asset is his energy getting around the park and coincidentally or not, near enough all our good performances without him have been with an extra man in midfield. Not someone who’ll get many goals or assists though.
  16. That’s interesting, I can believe Todorov but how have Ballantyne and Aiken ended up in there? I do think a lot of it was missing his energy and mobility but up until the last few games we’d barely won a game without Aiken.
  17. Went along today to tick off another ground since the Airdrie game was off and was really impressed by Stenny. Very solid at the back (the Jamiesons and Buchanan are as good a base as you’ll get at this level), lots of energy (and big Nat) in midfield and real quality going forward with Yates, O’Reilly and an on form Aitken. As soon as Stenny scored they seemed in total control and I never thought there was going to be any other outcome than a remarkable 11th consecutive win. Still a long way to go but a league title has been a long time coming and it looks like great fun supporting the warriors at the moment.
  18. I think we must be one of the most attractive clubs in the country for loans at the moment. A manager who trusts young players, a team playing good football and a team who are successful with every game being pretty challenging too. I’m sure that will be a factor in the Megwa decision, if he was out on loan at a club which didn’t test or develop him it might be an easier decision for Hibs.
  19. https://www.mailplus.co.uk/scottish-edition/sport/football/338629/special-report-mccabes-rough-diamonds-are-shining-bright-in-the-championship?preview=1 Good article here on McCabe and more generally the progress the club have made in the last few years. Good input from @AirdrieFanTV and @CapitalDiamond
  20. Inverness 0-1 Dundee United Arbroath 0-1 Ayr Dunfermline 1-2 Airdrie Morton 2-2 Partick Thistle Raith 2-1 Queen’s Park
  21. I think it’s a bit of both with Fordyce. His lack of pace can be shown up when a quick attacker runs at him directly but his positioning is pretty good and we’re pretty organised defensively, so it’s rare he’s in that position. We spend so much time with the ball in defence and when McCabe isn’t playing Fordyce becomes the default playmaker at the back which explains his possession scores. Todorov and Gallagher have both missed a few chances but the eye test suggest our inability to score from open play is a lack of clear chances rather than spurning lots of great opportunities every week. The biggest difference from last season is our wide players, Smith and McGill both scored loads and regularly got into great positions, we don’t really have that this season.
  22. Frizzell is an interesting one, what makes him stand out? I think the general consensus among Airdrie fans is that he’s struggled to impact games at times this season, though he’s definitely picked up again recently. With Fordyce I’m guessing it’s his completed/progressive passes and aerial ability that’s got him in there?
  23. I think I’ve said it on our thread before but I think Ian Murray owes Kyle Turner a lot for keeping him in his job at Airdrie. When we lucked out and managed to sign him we were sitting mid-table in League One with a poor team going nowhere and despite putting in an Iain Davidson-esque tackle on Ryan Conroy four minutes into his debut (I can’t blame him) and essentially missing his first three games, Turner went on to drag us to the play-off final. I think he’s a played that Murray really trusts. He essentially played in midfield on his own half the time with two forwards in there beside him. We’ve been fortunate to have some very good midfielders over the last few years (Frizzell, Easton, McInroy) but I still rate Turner the most. A different kind of player but as good a Stanton replacement as you can get.
  24. Megwa played at Stranraer so is already cup-tied, so that won’t be a factor thankfully. Hopefully if they know they’re not going to play him regularly he can return for the cup game, though that might be wishful thinking. Turner and Easton together is quite the thought. Someone needs to explain to him that Consilium players are meant to sign for Airdrie though!
