Linlithgow are probably the last of the East teams capable of doing what Tranent (and Bo'ness to a lesser extent) have done. Jeanfield and Penicuik have potential to be promoted but don't have the type of support or backing as these teams.

Although, even as a Penicuik boy, Jeanfield are by FAR the best footballing team in the East if you want to watch as a neutral. They have (or at least did have) a few of the Scotland Futsal team in their squad so they can burst into some really silky stuff at times!

Apart from that, there's around 10 West teams that will go up and establish themselves before much changes in the east tbh

    Exactly this post!

Linlithgow are a very big club in Scottish non League terms and would be a great addition to the Lowland League - hopefully at the end of this season.

Very well run, decent crowd, great facilities etc etc and (potentially) Darvel aside, it just seems like it's their time.

Beyond that, unless an EOS club starts throwing money at it, or they open up a second promotion spot into the Lowland, I can only see West Clubs being promoted for the foreseeable future, especially now they are getting their Club licenses intact.

  2. Looking forward to taking in this derby match this weekend, especially as both having a good season.

Haven't been to Luncarty in many years - though I hear the pies and gravy are good!

Luncarty should be favourites but just hoping for an exciting game with a few goals.   (already eyeing up the corresponding fixture in late December).

  3.

Just Lochee Utd and Tayport with a license.  Blairgowrie, Carnoustie and North End have all indicated they hope to be licensed within the next few years or so.  Like above poster, can definitely see Broughty being in that mix too.

I took in the Broughty v Tayport game as a neutral today.

Whilst 2-0 was the final score, Broughty could/should easily have ran out 7-3 winners.  Entertaining and wide open game,  but in spite of a decent opening 15 minutes, Tayport were largely overran thereafter.

Some fine individual performances out there.  Broughty's number 4 coasted the game at centre half - very stylish performance, so composed.  Great timing, and excelled both in tackling and in the air.  The left back (3) was as good at defending as he was going forward.  Very much a modern day fullback.  Made great runs going forward, got decent crosses in, but his defensive work was excellent too, arguably even better.    Chased absolutely everything down, and won the ball back on numerous occasions.

Broughty will go far and will be interesting to see if they can challenge Carnoustie and the likes - game at Carnoustie this midweek will be an interesting gauge even after just 2 games.

Tayport put their teamsheet out on Twitter and I have to say their number 8 (Paterson) pulled all the strings for them in midfield.  Great ball control, terrific passing ability, but even more impressive was his instinctiveness to get into the right areas.  Mouthy wee b@stard right enough, gave the referee and his fellow teammates an earful the entire game, but I'd put that down to a passion and desire for winning.  Tayport will bounce back and likely still finish in top 6.

Best of luck to both clubs going forward.

Ready for my return to Scotland, July 23-31, looking like I'll take in a few Lowland League games - at least they play midweek unlike some others (why have lights if you don't use them - expensive waste of income) All reliant on public transport and rail strikes, fingers crossed again. See ya soon

Always good to welcome a groundhopper, a passion of mine too.

I'll be taking in the Midlands league that week - Tayport v Lochee United (27th) in midweek - the only two licensed clubs in the division, and two of the 5 best clubs in the league.  Great set up at Tayport too with very nice facilities but not been in years now.

As part of a family hol that week up in the Fife area, I'm hoping to visit nearby Tayside the following Saturday to see Lochee Harp v Letham (30th).  Seen Harp before too but they've since converted their ground into a new 3g arena so quite keen to re-visit.

Hope you have a great time wherever you end up!

  5. Just posted a similar post on the EOS site.

Counting down days as a neutral to see Darvel v Tranent in a couple of weeks.

Unusually I've not had the pleasure of seeing either team live this season.

So who should I be looking out for from a Darvel perspective - a solid centre half, an attack minded fullback, a defensive midfielder etc etc

Great time of year for the non league - just a pity there isn't a more fluid approach to promotion/relegation re spots available.

Talked one of my mates who wouldn't normally dream of going to a game that doesn't involve one half of the Old Firm into going - really hope this game delivers........I'm in absolute no doubt it will!

Like Glenconner, think I'll take in Tranent v St Cuthbert this weekend first.

The ones I can think of (no guarantee of function or adequacy):

    • Aberdeen University
    • Burghead Thistle*
    • Deveronside
    • Fraserburgh Utd
    • Hermes
    • Longside
    • Montrose Roselea

    *More training lights

Entry level licence required, ground criteria are in @Ginaro's link. HFL used to additionally ask for floodlights, but they are now required in the licencing criteria.

The 7 clubs you mention are the same ones I had with lights - a quarter of the NJ clubs had lights prior to BOD leaving for the HL.

Hopefully in time some of those will look towards licensing although facilities tend to be a bit more basic in the NJ's.

Not sure, they were asking around for second hand ones about a year ago but they're definitely up now. Only about 3 years ago their chairman was claiming they couldn't even think about them as it would confuse pilots coming to land at Aberdeen Airport, so the club has obviously moved ahead a long way.

    Love it, lol.

With electricity through the roof, perhaps the airport could no longer afford landing lights, and so Dyce FC to the rescue!

Longer term as you've alluded to, the more licensed clubs the better as the play-offs certainly deserve better.

I'm not sure of Dyce's intentions but their floodlights are up now. Given their cup performances this year I think they have a shot at winning the Superleague next season. Here's hoping we have proper playoffs next year, can't be as poor as this year, that's for sure.

Great news re the floodlights - when did they go up?

  10. I see from the SPFL website that the League 2 play off final dates are the 7th and 14th May.

Are the LL v HL play off final dates therefore the 23rd and 30th Apr, or do they incorporate midweek dates?

Banks o Dee beat Linlithgow Rose away today. Unreal result.

I was at this fixture a few years back in the Scottish when Banks O Dee hosted the Rose in the Scottish and again were victorious.

Honestly not that much of a shock that's it happened again - Banks O Dee are for real (remember the Highland League clubs turned down their application a few years back under the misnomer that they weren't truly a Highland club when it was well known it was purely down to how successful they were) and for the few uninitiated who aren't aware, next year will be very interesting when BOD go toe to toe with the best the Highland league has to offer.  Watch this space!

  12. Took this game in as a neutral.

Was very impressed at how the Buffs flew out the traps and dominated most of the first half.

Whilst fully deserving their 1-0 HT lead, I have to say that their domination resulted in little (if any) clear cut chances other than the goal.

The second half however was a completely different affair.  Complete role reversal in terms of domination, however how Darvel didn't score 3 or 4, maybe more is beyond me.  A combination of outstanding saves, the woodwork, and just being plain unlucky kept the scoreline from being completely overturned.

Looks like this race could go to the end with these two, with Talbot likely to be right up there gunning for top spot.......without ruling out the likes of Clydebank and Pollok either.

And great to see Kilwinning's new abode, and the improvements they've already made - in particular the floodlights that came on for the second half.

All the best to both teams who clearly belong in the Lowland.

Finnart vs Glenvale originally penciled in for Wednesday 21st has been moved to the 19th with a change of venue to Glasgow United's Greenfield Park.

Not a huge fan of the neutral venue aspect but tempted to pop along out of intrigue.

Took in the BSC v St Peter's game earlier today (technically yesterday now).

With some 34 clubs now having lights I was thinking... how many have seats?

These have stands (18) - large or small:

Camelon, Linlithgow, LTHV, Sauchie, Tynecastle, Whitehill
    Edinburgh Utd, (Leith)
Easthouses, Glenrothes, Hawick, Heriot-Watt University, Peebles, Preston
    Edinburgh College, Fauldhouse, Syngenta, Whitburn

Hill of Beath, Newtongrange, Tranent and Armadale have put some seats into enclosures IIRC.

    Missed any?

Is it still 34, I have 35 listed but could be wrong.

I'm wondering if you've included Inverkeithing with their ground switch which is now a floodlit 3G.

Also, I came across this interesting article highlighting (near the bottom) that Armadale now have lights too.  What's unclear though is that if its just training lights only.

I support Rangers and Celtic having colt sides in the lower leagues,

This is about Scotland developing more top players.

I do not understand the anger towards colt sides.

If Celtic, Rangers or a big English side sent a youth team to play a part time side in Scotland in a  friendly no one would mind. But suddenly it happens in a competitive game and you get the nonsense of ant divisive tribalists complaining about it.

My priorities in Scottish football are
    1) The international side does well. And for that we need good Scottish players.

2). The Scottish clubs do well in Europe. This idea will allow the big sides to develop more top players.

And before some clown says that Rangers and Celtic should fill their entire first team with under 21 players, well what part time team does that?

I am fed up with clowns putting their part time teams finishing 3 or 4 places higher in the league above the needs of the Scottish national team.

I SUPPORT SCOTLAND - END OF STORY.

Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, Dundee United,. Dundee, and Motherwell should also have colt teams in the SPFL and non league system.

For years Hibernian had a team in the non league system.

Yes Hibs did have a team in the non league system, and guess what, they started at the bottom tier available to them.

OF Colts should be no different.

The irony being that if they had just started at the bottom at the beginning of this process, they’d have likely already made their way to SPFL level by now.

Bit of fairness goes a long way!

George Fraser and co could make themselves national heroes today with one easy press release:

"In light of the disgusting scenes taking place throughout Glasgow yesterday, the Lowland League no longer wishes to be associated with any club whose fans behave in such a manner while "celebrating".

Consequently the offer to Rangers and Celtic to field youth sides in the League next season has been withdrawn.

    END."

Come on George. You know it makes sense.

    So true.

For me it dates back several years when they were in tier 4 and yet still saw fit to offer Ian Black something like £8k a week to get them out a part time league.

I understand its hard to blood youngsters in a two team league when one single defeat can get you lambasted from all angles.

But with the players they had when they were in the fourth tier, they could easily have got out of that with the talented youngsters they had at their disposal.

And whilst I used to be one of his biggest supporters, and I still believe (fundamentally) that he is a decent guy, I just can't see 'Podcast George' (patented term)  taking the moral high ground............but I live in hope.....as that is certainly what he used to believe in (and stand for)  prior to his Old Firm love affair.

McLaughlin came from us back then and you also had Stevie Convery from us too. Clyde became a bit of a who’s who of junior football. Which made sense when the management and coaching staff were from the juniors.

Forgot about Stevie C.  Decent player and a good lad too - came back for one or two functions even after he'd left the club.

My plan is to see the new clubs in the WoSFL.

I accept most of them will be playing in some public park cage type thingy the first season anyway. So that's part one.

Second will to keep an eye on the fight for promotion at the top.  Monies on Talbot but i expect a few others to make it hard for them.

I liked to see Talbot go up just to see the strength of the rest without the Talbot monkey on their backs.

The rest of the decade should be interesting as the dead wood from the SFL start to come down.

Clyde v Cumbernauld Utd in a league game?

Very similar thought process for this year.  Had it not been for Covid, I'd have already seen St Cadoc's and Drumchapel etc etc.

Hope to see them this year instead along with all the newbies who have been accepted from the Paisley area, Bridgeton etc etc, as well as Campbelltown too.

Loving the prospect of all the new grounds!

What team do you plan to go and watch next season, if i may ask?

So basically my background is that I'll go see a few Hearts games, plus Clyde too as they are my local team.

But my real passion is non league footie......so most Saturdays I can be seen at a LL/WOS/EOS/SOS.....even a Highland game in order to see every team in the country.  There's often no rhyme or reason to it.

Basically whatever fixture takes my fancy, regardless of distance, I will make my way there.

    How bout you?

TBH, you tune out the supporters when you've got to do it...had one memorable altercation with an opposing player though...he'd dragged the ball a foot or more over the line and called me a cheating b*****d when I flagged....I countered by telling him that was the worst first touch he'd taken since that time with his uncle when he was ten. That one stopped play for a good half a minute :)

Slightly before my time there, but Andy McClay, Richie McCusker, Pat Keogh and the rest...if nothing else it proved that there isn't a huge gulf between the top of the non-league game - where we were at that point in time - and the lower divisions of the SPFL.

    Brilliant re running the lines.

Spot on re the names back then.  Alan Barraclough I think being another.  Mark McLaughlin too....if he came from Maryhill.

And yeah same applies......Kelty and co can definitely make huge steps into working their way up the pyramid.

    Exciting times ahead.

I started supporting the team when I lived just off Byres Rd, but I'm not from the area...I live miles away from the west end now. And aye, I've been dragged into doing the club linesman duties there many a time...there's nothing worse than someone coming into the social club ten minutes before kickoff when you're on your third pint:

"You alright for doing the line today?"

    Baws.

I'm a Kirky boy but moved out to Shuna Street for a few years.

Pretty brutal running the line at Lochburn.......that takes an inordinate amount of brave pills!

Hope I was kind if I was one of the many towering above!  😛

ps - way back in the day I went to see Clyde for years - we literally took about 7 or 8 guys from a very talented Maryhill side.  Clyde ended up in the Championship for a good few years because of that.

Speaking of rock and roll lifestyles and Campbeltown, I remember a band I was in back in the day was booked to play the town hall there - the Victoria Hall? We were unloading the gear in the lane at the side of it when two polis walked down and said hello, only to see the bass player who hadn't noticed them and was still in the van head down doing an enormous line of speed off the dashboard.

We thought he was getting lifted and the gig was off, but they just shook their heads, laughed and walked away. Bizarre.

    Haha.....only in Campbelltown eh?

See you're a Maryhill boy.....used to live near there (Ruchill) a number of years ago.......near the McD's (story of my life!) and so seen many a game at Lochburn......such a great view as you're right on top of the park.  Wouldn't like to be a linesman there mind you!

Its a shame as I've only been been to see Berwick twice but were such great trips.

Great walks the next day down below the town next to the water with the trains overhead.

Think Berwick and others have badly misjudged this whole situation.
