What would you identify as the middle ground between under-achieving and over-achieving if over-achieving is qualifying for the best-16 and under-achieving is what unfolded? What would have been okay?

Not finishing rock bottom out of all 24 teams with only 3 shots on target in a fairly accommodating group. The fact you think aiming for better than that is unreasonable or unrealistic is an incredibly defeatist mentality.

Watching you attempt to rationalize the performance as anything but a huge disappointment is tiresome.

Some of us spent a lot of money to watch Scotland play and we got served up a cowardly performance across all 3 games with absolutely nothing except a deflected McTominay goal to cheer for.

I agree with the idea that there are 11 or 12 teams ahead of Scotland and a group of around 15 teams of a similar level below that which we are a part of.

Our views diverge after that. What's your basis for expecting Scotland to be the best of a group of ~15 similar teams?

    We under-achieved because we didn't over-achieve.

Fans always set the maximum, best-case scenario as the minimum. It seems like madness to me absolutely destined for perpetual disappointment.

No, we under achieved because we finished rock bottom of the overall table with the lowest xG and fewest shots on target. All this in a relatively un intimidating group with a Hungary team who were also rank rotten.

We were utter pish whereas the likes of Georgia and Slovakia went into the tournament with a better attitude and gave some teams a fright. It boggles my mind to see anyone try and defend that display.

Capable of being a top-16 team at times? Expecting that Scotland competed better than Celtic do in the Champions League? I don't have any issue with that. Equating what you wrote above to what you wrote below is where the issue is for me.

At a maximum Scotland have shown a capacity of reaching the top-16 teams in Europe. Scotland aspire to establish themselves as a top-16 team in Europe. Am I being too lenient by saying that? Are we a top-16 team punching below our level?

If not, I don't understand why anyone would set Scotland's maximum capability as their minimum expectation for the tournament.

Are Georgia, Slovakia and Slovenia top 16 teams in Europe? They all got out of their group and posed a threat to whoever they came up against.

Hungary were rubbish and we barely mustered a shot on target against them. Defending that abject showing by saying “Ach what can we do?” is a pathetic mentality that none of the aforementioned teams would entertain.

We under achieved in an embarrassing manner. End of.

I didn’t realise quite how many people are closet Robinson fans. It’s rather terrifying. I’ve been commenting on an article regarding St. Johnstone’s Cammy MacPherson, who is rightly being called out for retweeting the Robinson documentary the other day. The amount of people who have come out to support him and his “free speech” is astonishing. Lots and lots of people having a go at me, urging me to “watch the documentary and decide.” Horrific stuff.

While it is alarming, the type of people to comment on news articles and engage in Facebook arguments on public posts are more likely to be the type of fud that supports Robinson et al. They are still a minority in the real world.

There is, of course, another aspect to the "protests" that might be getting held in Scotland. I suppose it's conceivable that the "Pro-UK" shower might relish a chance to have a pop at the almost 50% of the population here that seem to favour Scottish independence.

If the Pro-UK "protestors" kick off, ironically it might result in an attitude switch that they might not like.

Edit to add - A "Pro-UK" march in Scotland, to me, has a completely different vibe to one elsewhere in the UK.

It’s interesting to note that the type of right wing “British” nationalism you get down south (which is effectively English nationalism but with union jacks) is of a different flavour to the loyalist British nationalism we get here and in NI.

I often wonder if the unique interplay between football and politics we get here has an effect on why that type of politics and these riots haven’t/won’t kick off the way they have down south.

I think that type of politics being both closely associated with the most knuckle dragging element of the support of a football club which everyone else already hates - and with the loyalist subculture that is viewed with derision to everyone who doesn’t already partake - serves to hamper the movement’s appeal to a mainstream audience here.

I wonder if Kerr McIroy could be the one that is known, to replace Alston. He's not got a new club yet.

I thought McInroy was decent but we are pretty stacked at centre mid now, no point wasting what’s left of the budget for another when we are crying out for a right back and keeper.

  7. Mitchell is fine. He’s okay but not brilliant.

I would be fairly disappointed if Ridgers does get signed as a backup because every other signing Doolan has made seems to have been with the aim of improving the first xi.

If we do go up then we’ll need to sign a number 1 next summer as a matter of priority because Mitchell is probably not good enough for the top flight.

I'm not seeing any reflection on the fact their runs in recent tournaments have had an awful lot to do with good fortune in avoiding playing the most elite sides. Indeed, England's record against the top sides is absolutely abysmal. Until this is acknowledged, their mentality is unlikely to change.

The EPL PR bubble and English media brainwashing continues to expand, it would seem.

    Glorious.

The Netherlands game is literally the only time in history they’ve won a knockout game away from Wembley against one of the traditional top nations (and I’d argue the Netherlands - particularly the current team - aren’t really on the same level as the likes of France/Brazil/Germany).

    Pep's a Catalan nationalist, isn't he?

Pep is never going to manage Spain for this reason so if he ever wants a shot at international management it might likely be England considering he already lives there and speaks the language. Hopefully Argentina give him an offer at some point to stop this from happening.

I honestly don’t remember the “well I’ll be supporting England” thing being as prominent up here before Indy ref. I think it’s completely broken some people who can’t bear to be associated with any aspect of Scottish identity since 2014.

Liquidation + the concept of independence becoming mainstream has embittered a large section of the you know what’s.

I do think this plays into it.

It bugs me with the "Come on England" stuff tacked onto the end of unrelated programmes.  They do genuinely forget that they're broadcasting to the entire UK.  It's this thoughtless reading of the UK and England as synonymous which I'd imagine every non-English resident in the UK is familiar with.

Again though, I can't help feeling I'm flailing around for things to be offended by, and to blame for why I'm so bitter and twisted.

They don’t forget - they just don’t care.

The result tonight will have me down over the next week or so but the lack of ambition for our country portrayed  by some folk in this thread makes me want to weep.

What is wrong with Scottish people that they find it acceptable to be pretty shit and not expect to ever be better?

It is the history of the Scotland

Watch the game in the Heumarkt in Cologne if you don't have a ticket. Avoid  the Fan Park, the bars here have bene buzzing for the matches, great atmosphere and far easier to get served. Plenty have TV's outside.

Cheers, will check this out. Sounds similar to the great atmosphere we’ve had at the Dusseldorf Aldstadt in the last couple of days.

  14. Is everyone without a match ticket heading through to Cologne anyway?

The Munich fan zone was an utter shambles for getting drink due to the amount of people there, so much so that it’s put us a bit off going without a ticket and we might just stay in Dusseldorf to watch instead.

In two minds as I think the atmosphere in Cologne would be brilliant, although Dusseldorf has been bouncing full of Scots in the last couple of days.

According to Eilidh Barbour on BBC Sport, Clarke has said there's two positions he's not made his mind up on for the starting XI on Friday.

    Almost certainly Hanley/Hendry and Gilmour/Christie.

    Back to the personnel

Has Tommy Conway done anything to skip the queue with his performance on Friday?

I think he might just have done enough, and I was hoping Shankland might have risen to the occasion

    He clearly didn’t

Conway looked sharper and had better movement

Id expect Adam’s to start but Conway could be a better like for like replacement if that’s what we needed

If Adams is burst after 80 minutes and we’re holding onto a narrow lead, Conway may potentially be the better option.

Shankland if we are chasing a goal.
