Funnily, I was with Rangers fans - so it was entertaining for me.

It’s the bit about “most loyal” that gets me 😂

There is such a huge spectrum around things that it is impossible to just define those with high points as the most loyal.

“Most loyal” in this case is basically just a euphemism for having the money and time off required to go to multiple away games a year.

  2. While the opening game will be a great occasion, I’m not sure having the pot 1 team in game 1 is ideal as we will more than likely lose and then be under real pressure in the 2nd match.

It’s a competitive and evenly matched group that we have a good chance at progressing from, but equally I could see us playing well in all 3 games and still being unlucky to go home on 2 points.

I’m prepared to bet my mortgage on McLean being included.  He’s never let us down, can play a few positions, and one of SC’s favourite subs to close out a match.  I suspect he’s also a positive presence around the squad.

I’d imagine there’s a couple of defenders, alongside Brown/Nisbet/Jack/Shankland who’ll end up missing out.  I’d say the midfield has been remarkably consistent across the last 12-18 months.  Only the likes of Turnbull and McCrorie have had more than one call up, but haven’t had any/real game time.

McTominay, McGregor, McGinn, Gilmour, Ferguson, McLean, and Armstrong are all dead certs.  According to Wikipedia, Anderson is the only midfielder we’ve called up in the last 12 months who didn’t make the last squad.

We’ve played/called up a fair number of defenders, mainly due to injuries, and there not being as many out-and-out strongest options like we have in midfield.  A couple will lose out just simply because we’ll run out of spaces, and injury at the wrong time, or just struggling for fitness (Souttar, Cooper, McKenna, Doig, Taylor, Hanley).

I don’t see any names coming from left field in time for June.  The only plausible (we can debate how likely, fair, sensible, or justified separately) options would be Barnes and Doak.  Otherwise, it’s only a coin toss between a couple of defenders, and our much-of-a-muchness up front.

It would be a nice problem to have if someone could suddenly make a last ditch effort, but it looks unlikely.

I think the only other left field candidate aside from the two you mentioned could be for the 3rd striker spot. If someone like Ross Stewart, Fraser Hornsby or Oli McBurnie start banging them in during the next 6 months then they could have a real chance of making the plane.

I’m not ashamed to admit that a large part of my dislike of the Welsh football team over the last decade has been a raging jealously at their relative success.

For me, it’s also the fact (for both them and Ireland) that they don’t really have much footballing pedigree at all compared to us.

Football is unquestionably our main sport whereas rugby/GAA/hurling are bigger for them respectively. We also have a much more vibrant footballing culture in general with bigger and better clubs and a domestic scene that puts theirs to shame. The Welsh national team have to play in the Cardiff city stadium because they can’t get close to selling out the principality.

It’s an absolute travesty that Wales and Ireland have been more successful than us for most of this century, and I’m glad we’re finally restoring some of the natural order.

  5. Every game against the pot 2 or 4 teams (bar Italy or if any of the weaker playoff sides get through) is essentially a toss up. We’d be slight favourites against a couple and slight underdogs against some others.

It isn’t a given, but in a tournament where 4 points will almost certainly see us get through the group it would be a disappointment to bow out in the first round in almost all draw scenarios. We aren’t likely to get a better chance to do so than next summer.

Strangely not so bothered about the Germans and would love to face them in the opener in Munich. Think they are under a lot of pressure and have struggled for some time now. Think we could given them a game.

Don't want France. Far too good and should be winning the whole thing.

For me not wanting England coms down to them being very good on the pitch when at it and because I want to enjoy the 3 match days (hopefully we might have 4 or 5 - we can but dream) and playing them on foreign soil will end up being anything but an enjoyable occasion. There will tens of thousands of fans of both in Germany and the host city on game day would be a complete shitshow. Nah, this promises to be a special tournament and there are far better options for us to face.

Yeah, I’m looking forward to a party atmosphere in Germany but I feel like sharing a city with England’s fans would be a recipe for disaster.

The euros in London were okay because of Covid and the fact they were hosting - I only saw one small group of England fans the entire time I was there. The England away mob travel in numbers and actively look for trouble so I think the atmosphere could be a lot more toxic if we were to play them abroad.

Obviously a number of countries are much of a muchness but I'm thinking along the following lines, In order of preference 1st to last in each Pot! Watched quite a lot of highlights of qualifiers so basing some of it on recent performances as well as who I think is improving and regressing!

    Pot 1

    Germany

    Belgium

    Spain

    Portugal

    England

    France

    Pot 2

    Austria

    Albania

    Switzerland

    Turkey

    Hungary

    Denmark

    Pot 4

    Path C country

    Path B country

    Path A country

    Czech Repbulic

    Romania

    Serbia

Avoiding the likes of Holland, Italy and Croatia in our Pot is good news for me. Slovakia and Slovenia likely to be in Pot 3 as well.

I would probably rather play Spain or Belgium over Germany purely due to the fact they’re hosting.

I’d also swap Austria for Denmark in pot 2 - Austria have been looking decent under Rangnick and the Danes seem to have hugely regressed since the last WC qualifiers. Every team in pot 2 is doable, though.

Israel out on their arse (for automatic at least), which is a terrible wee shame.

They are garbage though and would be an excellent draw at the Euros if the play offs are still on for them.

I agree they are rubbish and we should be beating them but somewhat similarly to England I just cba playing them for the inevitable circus that would follow (particularly in Germany).

Belgium will almost certainly be in Pot 1, as long as they beat Azerbaijan at home. Austria will drop into Pot 2 or 3 depending on what we do tomorrow.

    These are the current projections:

Not saying we’d be massive favourites, but I’d fancy our chances of winning a one off game against any of the projected pot 2 teams.

Pot 3 on the other hand contains two teams that we’d be clear underdogs against (3 if Italy beat Ukraine in their final game and secure pot 3). We’d be favourites against Slovenia, but Serbia are probably of similar quality to the pot 2 teams and would be a toss up.

I wouldn’t necessarily be fearing Holland or Croatia like I would France/Portugal but you’d definitely rather avoid them all the same as they are still good teams.

Also if we win by 2 or more goals here we go into Pot 2 instead of Pot 3 which should mean an easier group in Germany.

Frustratingly,  it would actually be better from the perspective of getting an easier group to be in pot 3 as it’s fairly likely Holland, Croatia and Italy could all end up in pot 3.

  11. 44 minutes ago, MarkoRaj said:

Yes I believe so. No other team can get more than 18 points.

I think mathematically we could still finish in pot 4 but would require a string of unlikely results.

We could still get pot 1 if Spain lose to Georgia while we beat Norway…

AND Denmark fail to beat NI by at least 3 more goals than we beat Norway by

AND Turkey fail to beat Wales by at least 3 more goals than we beat Norway by.

These 14 are the only absolute certainties. Then your left with the folk like McKenna, Ferguson, McLean, Taylor, Armstrong, Jack who make every squad but don't start as often as the above. The only other midfielder we've called up in the last 12 months who isn't in the squad now is Elliot Anderson, so I think you can safely say this nothing will change there. Hanley probably makes the last CB spot above Cooper, if he's fit.

I think you're really looking at the 2 other options up front, and the 2 goalies as the only positions that are truly up in the air. Gordon is a stick on if he;s fight, and Clark is clearly Clarke's pick out of the 3 we have in the squad now. So Shankland, Brown, Nisbet, Stewart and the wildcard of Doak fighting for those final 2 places.

I agree with all of your 14 names there.

At least one of Hanley/Cooper/McKenna/Souttar is going to miss out (probably McKenna if he doesn’t start getting game time).

I think Taylor’s place will be under serious threat given Hickey can also play LB and he, Tierney and Robbo are all far better than Taylor. The only way I could see Taylor getting minutes without injuries is if we win the first 2 group games and want to rest people for the final one.

I think Ferguson and McLean are basically stick ons as Clarke clearly trusts the latter and Ferguson is a stand out player for a top half Serie A side. Armstrong is more versatile than Jack so will probably get the nod ahead of him.

I can’t see us only going with 2 strikers so one of Shankland/Brown/Stewart/Nisbet will be there.

With 3 keepers, that completes the squad (assuming all are fit).

    The biggest questions for me are;

1.) Do we take 5 CB’s + Tierney or go with just 4 to make space for another full back/attacker?

2.) Does Armstrong get dropped for a wild card in Barnes/Doak/Gordon if we do go with 5 CB’s and Doak kicks on or one of the other two decide to commit to Scotland?

Nice to see our Home Secretary being so rational about the protests....

"Home secretary Suella Braverman has condemned the pro-Palestine rallies held across the UK in recent weeks as “hate marches”."

Surely Suella would feel right at home in them then?

Amazing that the shouty guy is ever invited on to anything.

Absolutely everyone I’ve seen on the Israeli side of this conflict - including lots of people with real power and influence - seem to be complete fucking lunatics.

Anwar El Ghazi sacked by Mainz for posting something pro-Palestine on Instagram. Germany doing completely normal things.

Said “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” which some construe to be anti-Semitic. The rationale is that you’re saying Israel shouldn’t exist which in turn means you want all the Jews there killed/expelled.

I personally think it’s a massive stretch to assume that is what is meant by that statement and is an utterly ridiculous thing to sack someone for, but the Germans tend to be (perhaps understandably) complete shitebags when it comes to anything to do with criticism of Israel.
