I wonder if there will be a few stories doing the rounds about people who've had their Euro 2024 trips ruined because of accommodation issues or people just roughing in one form or another. I'd definitely be hedging my bets and expecting accommodation side cancellations.

I've booked accommodation in a town not hosting any matches specifically to avoid this.

  2. Also... https://www.nutmegmagazine.co.uk/issue-1/remembering-ralph/

For the 25th anniversary of the Premier Division win, Davie Dodds had a function in his Dundee pub and I found myself in a room full of heroes. Late in the evening, Richard Gough asked me “where’s busy?” Ralph, myself and the Californian-based Gough found ourselves in the Mardi Gras nightclub, where Ralph and I watched in unbridled delight as the following ensued:

    INT. MARDI GRAS NIGHTCLUB. NIGHT.

The nightclub is largely empty. Tatjana’s Santa Maria blasts the threadbare crowd. Ralph, myself and Gough stand at the bar. Gough’s hair, once ginger, is now golden. His face is a deep mahogany. He looks magnificent, and he knows it.

A MAN approaches, a little unsteady on his feet.

    MAN

    Are you Richard Gough?

    GOUGH

    Correct.

    MAN

What you up to these days big man?

Gough flicks back his golden hair.

    GOUGH

    Surfing.

    MAN

    (presuming he’d misheard)

    Surfing?

    GOUGH

    Surfing.

    MAN

    Surfing?

    GOUGH

    Surfing.

    MAN

    (with growing confusion)

    Surfing?

    GOUGH

    Surfing.

The man looks around the dark, empty spaces of the Mardi Gras. As Santa Maria reaches a crescendo (Santa Maria, Santa Maria, Oh, Oh, Santa Maria…) his whole life flashes before his eyes. He thinks about choices made, turnings taken, opportunities missed. He revaluates the very core of his being as everything he has ever known to be true retreats in front of him. He grips the bar, as to find some semblance of solidity in a world suddenly void of reason. He turns back to the golden-haired Gough, his body crumpled, his eyes pleading for escape from the escalating existential crisis, his voice cracked and full of pain…

    MAN

    Surfing?!

Richard Gough went to Rangers - he is dead to me.

I remember years ago seeing a picture of a bunch of the league-winning team on a night out - there must've been around eight of them and there was Richard Gough.

It kinda shocked me as I was much like you - dead to me - but he clearly remembers the time with affection.

So I'll cut him some slack given he played for us for six years and helped win us the title.

Hardly a lie is it. I took a snapshot of yesterday and neither were in the 11, Dykes not even in the squad.

I even checked the missing players on Flashscore and he didn't appear.

No need to get out your tree

Maybe Apps aren't the best way to tell about injuries?

Cook has been working his way back to fitness following a hamstring injury and was not ready to return for Saturday’s defeat at Huddersfield.

Striker Dykes, who also missed that game after picking up a knock, has had a scan and Rangers are hopeful the problem is not serious. He too could be involved against the Baggies.

Just out of interest, what level is the MLS compared to the European leagues, and in particular what level are Vancouver Whitecaps at, say in comparison to the Scottish Scottish Premiership?

Well the MLS recently signed a $2.5bn TV deal, so if it is worse, I'm guessing not for long.

I think that's pretty harsh.  He struggled with injuries but still managed 150+ games in the EPL and was at Everton for 5 seasons.  He was always quite mercurial but scored some brilliant goals (albeit maybe not quite enough of them for the talent he had on his day).

McFadden was just one of those players you see occasionally who become possessed when they pull on the national jersey.

I think their underperformance under Martinez is way overblown tbh. They were excellent in 2018 and came up against an even better team in the semis.

Imagine having Vincent Kompany, Moussa Dembele, Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard (all around their peaks) in your team and ever losing. I can't compute.

I went to Porto in between Seville and Lille and watched their game v Slovakia in a bar with a bunch of Portuguese guys who surprisingly were really downbeat and thought their team wasn't good enough to challenge England and France next year and they benefited from an easy group. They really aren't sold on Martinez either.

Understandable. The squad that Belgium had ridiculously underperformed.

I still drool looking at their 2018 World Cup squad.

Have I to admit I got it wrong again? Nobody else can manage it once but I've to do it continually?

The results and performances at those euros weren't good, I didn't think he would be about to improve things to this extent. In hindsight would I sack Clarke after the euros? No, I wouldn't. I was wrong (im not sure what else folk are looking for tbh)

50 lashes should cover it 😆

  10. Realistically this will be the last shot for a bunch of our current key players to get to a World Cup - notably Robertson and McGinn would be 32 and McGregor 33.

And we're in as good a position as we've been since 96-98 to do it.

Does anyone know the seeding setup for qualifying? Don't want no play-offs, lets top that group!

If it's based on Nations League rankings then finishing 3rd (or above) in the 24/25 Nations League group would make us pot one and finishing last pot two. If it's on FIFA ranking then we're currently 16th, but with a realistic chance of making it to 12th (currently Sweden) for pot one.

Anyway, I'm going to every Scotland game now to ensure I can get tickets for the party. I did the same for Brazil, but hey-ho 😅

Getting out the groups would be a first and would definitely put him up there as the best in terms of performance at tournament. He’d be doing that without having a Dalglish or the likes to call on either.

It would be nice for us, and make his CV look really good, if he could get us to a World Cup. That’s a bit of a tall order these days, but it would be nice.

I've already moved on to the mentality that it'll be epic failure if he doesn't. Sorry Steve - you raised the bar! 😆

In fact of the regular starters, McGregor at 30 is the oldest, so there's not really any retirements coming before the next World Cup, we've got some good youngsters and there's 16 teams to qualify instead of 13.

    Let's go! 😂

  12. Almost exactly 10 years ago we actually beat Croatia 2-0, albeit it was a dead rubber.

You could make a case for a few of those players getting into the current team, but we're clearly stronger now.

    Allan McGREGOR

    Alan HUTTON

    Charlie MULGREW

    Russell MARTIN

    Grant HANLEY

    Barry BANNAN

    Scott BROWN (C)

    James MORRISON

    Steven NAISMITH

    Robert SNODGRASS

    Ikechi ANYA

Unless I'm mistaken, as of right now we have an equal chance of every game (apart from the ones involving Germany's group).

If, if, the teams from pot 2 go into the groups as A2, B2 etc then you could gamble that way, but I'm not even sure that's how it works.
