  1. While I might be biased, having long banged the drum for this kid, he’s been simply brilliant in the first half against Newcastle - Tonali, Bruno and Joelinton can’t get near him.

I think the days of him warming the bench in Brighton are over.

Yeah, suck it up guys. I'll say what I like, and if it affects your confidence or your mental health then it's your fault for reading it. f**k's sake.

I wouldn't get on your high horse unless you are uniquely the embodiment of only positive opinions, which I don't think you are.

Yes. Personal responsibility is important. If you have a profile in life, people will have opinions and will express them - don't go fcuking searching those opinions out if you are going to get depressed about some random not thinking your crossing is as good as Beckhams.

Anyway, on the great scale of lambasting our own players, I reckon I'm quite low down on the scale compared to most around here - I didn't say Birighitti was shit until long after most of you had been campaigning the Home Office to get him deported.

Though, I still hate Stuart Duff.

That's all quite fair, apart from the fact that some posters are overcritical of players in advance of matches. That must knock the confidence of some players.

It possibly does. But I’d go further than giving the genial advice that they don’t read it.

I have little sympathy for any player unprofessional enough to read it.

If you have the great fortune of being good enough to play football for a living… eat the right things, go to the gym, practice in your own time, don’t go searching for the reassurance of strangers on the internet thinking you’re awesome.

It's a perfectly valid swipe at the fairly significant amount of United fans who take a perverse amount of pleasure in seeing the team and some individuals struggle, as they can take to the stands to hound players*, and to social media to vent their stuff, hoping that in a few months time they can say, "see I told you so".

I highly doubt this is unique to Dundee United, but football fans, probably due to the advent of social media**, seem to have evolved into a very intolerant bunch with bizarrely unrealistic expectations.

*in the case of Freeman, I think he's decent but the vitriol directed to him from the stands has visibly affected his confidence.

** noticed all those mad United twitter accounts were very subdued after the win Vs Ayr, but couldn't wait to take to their keyboards after / during the Dunfermline match

I don’t want to see Freeman struggle. I’d rather he developed into the best right back in Scotland.

    But he won’t.

I always thought Smith was the better player, and he of course suffered from’ haters’. McMann too.

That said, he’s still a better option than playing a CM at RB imho.

And I never shout abuse at our own players - that’s just sad.

If players want to read PnB and lose confidence because some nobody called ArabFC doesn’t think they’re awesome, all I can say is… don’t do that.

Watt is not a natural finisher, not even close.  If he’s going to be the back up and Moult is injured for any length of time then we’re fucked.

Good luck finding a 'natural finisher' that's going to sit on the bench at a Scottish Championship club for naff all money.

Unless we're counting someone like Nicky Clark as a natural finisher.

Lionel Messi has shown that league up as having even worse defending than I expected - every single one of those videos of him makes it look like he's playing against a bunch of guys dragged off the street who have never met before. I suppose that's what happens when you have a salary cap and designated player system that incentivises bringing in big ticket attacking players and then having to scrape together the remaining pennies on centre-backs.

Are we gonna pretend that Messi wouldn’t be humiliating defenders in the SPFL just as badly, or worse?

Just the one assist for Gauld last night - slacking!

I'm not sure how excited I can get about the scandalous ticket prices. Everything is now ridiculously expensive and it's just the way of the world, sadly. Relative to inflation elsewhere in the economy the price of tickets hasn't gone up by an unusual amount. Of course you can argue that the starting price was too high already (it was) and that football is a luxury which some consumers (forgive me) might choose to forego, in a way which they might not be able to when compared with other expenses (which is probably true as well). But, when my weekly food shop has gone up by £20 - £30 and my fuel costs by £10 - £15, it seems a bit overblown to be getting upset about about an extra couple of quid getting into a game of football.

Cost of a ticket against Airdrie back in 1995 was £10 (I think). Inflation would make that £20 now. So £25 isn't mad. Unpalatable perhaps.

Anderson and Doak both natural wingers, something we don't have a great abundance of at the moment (Christie, Armstrong and McGinn all spend time in wide roles for Scotland but all most comfortable playing more central roles, especially McGinn. Lewis Ferguson also more of a number 10 imo). I think they'll be fantastic options for us, especially if we are struggling to break down a low block. Anderson clearly ahead of Doak at the moment in Clarke's mind which makes sense to me given he's three years older and has 47 senior appearances to Doak's 5.

Admittedly I've only seen Anderson play a few times, but on none of these occasions was he playing as a winger - he was playing centre midfield.

Nothing like Christie either from what I've seen.

Watching the City v Newcastle game last night and admiring how good Newcastle have become in the last few months, it struck me that there are a few options there that Clarke must surely have an eye on.

Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon, Tino Livramento and Elliott Anderson are all eligible for both Scotland and England and would all improve our squad imho.

Hayden Hackney down the road in Middlesborough too.

    One down, three to go.

Yeah, I was a bit apprehensive seeing Glass starting in a position which needs a bit more defensive discipline but I thought he was excellent in building play and also around the opposition box. Best full game that I think he's had for United, albeit against a poor team. If he can sort out the defensive weaknesses, such as they are or were, then he could be a real asset.  You don't get many guys who can strike the ball as well as he does from the edge of the box.

I didn't see the game so can't comment on performance, but I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Glass may be suited to more of a central role, albeit alongside an enforcer.

I mean that's just a copy and paste from Wikipedia, but oddly with Athletic deleted and Sociedad inserted... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletic_Bilbao_signing_policy

Not only are they maybe signing Tierney, they currently have players from France, Russia, Japan, America, Portugal, Mali and Nigeria in their squad.

Think I'd be tempted to go with Denholm at right back. For all that he was bullied against both Spartans and Thistle at centre half, he does look like a very tidy player with a good range of passing. Maybe too much of an ask to throw him into midfield alongside Meekison, when Meekison is also not great defensively. Alternatively, maybe Grimshaw and Denholm in the middle with Bisland at right back?

Its reassuring that 3 games into a season we're already at the tombola stage of team selection.

If he's not good enough to come on against Bournemouth then he's not good enough to come on against England

Or... his competition at Liverpool is Mo Sarah and his completion at Scotland is Ryan Christie.
