The Wrestling Thread

I'm going to just start watching wads of matches on Dailymotion and give my thoughts on here. It'll tend to be stuff I've never seen before. I'm going to try and steer clear of the WWE PPVs as I'll still be covering them. Anything from TV and earlier PPVs is fine though.

Jimmy Olsen vs. Vin Gerard, Ladder Match - CHIKARA Revelation X

Never heard of Gerard although the Olsen Twins are a good tag team from what I can remember. This happened in January of this year. Not the spectacular spotfest that you would be looking for from a Ladder Match, but this was a very good match and told a decent story. I'm actually glad the two guys had a wrestling match more than they had a ladder match. The big moves ended up meaning more. ****

Low Ki vs. Tatsuhito Takaiwa - Zero One

Unfortunately have no idea when this match was. As you would expect from these two, this is a very physical match with lots of stiff shots and they kick each other's arse big time. Both men show a lot of fighting spirit in this match as well as neither man is very easy to keep down. Might be worth seeking this one out. ****

Doug Williams vs. Kaio - ICW 21/05/2005

This is the Italian promotion called ICW. Kaio is actually coming here to team with a guy called The Red Devil down in Largs this month. Rather nice coincidence that I'm watching him here. Doug Williams is awesome, so if this isn't good I'll be worried. Well, no need to be worried. Infact, this was a really good match and Kaio certainly looked great in there. ***3/4

Kevin Steen and El Generico vs. Jay and Mark Briscoe, Ladder Match - ROH Man Up 2007

You KNOW you want to see this. This was the end of a brilliant fued between the two teams that had seen them battle in 2/3 Falls, Street Fights and even a Steel Cage Match. All of which were awesome. This was the third ROH PPV and this was the main event of that show. This match is the very meaning of the term "bat shit crazy" as all four guys take ridiculous risks and hand out some of the most vicious chair shots you have ever seen. Much like the rest of their fued, this had pure hatred in it, and some of the ladder spots, the Doomsday Device one in particular, has to be seen to be believed. Fantastic match. ****1/2

I was considering going full marks purely for the Doomsday Device spot, but nah.

Johnny Saint vs. Mike Quackenbush, World of Sport Rules Match - wXw/CHIKARA Tag Team Grand Prix 2008

It's amazing to see someone of the age of Johnny Saint still able to take it to the mat and tear it up like he did in their first match. This is a rematch. The man is 66 years old. Certainly puts the likes of Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker into perspective, doesn't it ? For anyone wondering, their first match was awesome. This is one of them matches that you don't want to see ending. The end of the match is kind of crap and takes a wee bit away from it, but this is really good. ****1/4

KENTA and Extreme Tiger vs. Teddy Hart and Jack Evans vs. Joe Lider and Nicho El Millonario, Ladder Match - AAA 31/01/2009

Feckin' hell, can I not stay in one country for a couple of matches ? We're now off to Mexico for this one. At least three of the guys in the match are from elsewhere though and if you ask me, Joe Lider doesn't exactly sound Mexican. In a rather strange twist, this match actually gets worse after the ladders come into the match. Before the ladders come in, this is a really innovative spotfest with loads of cool moves that I'd never seen before. Could have been better than it was which should surprise you when you see the rating. Really good match. ****

Dragon Kid vs. Masato Yoshino - Dragon Gate The Gate of Destiny 2008

f**k yeah, this is what I'm talking about. If you've never seen Dragon Gate before, I can't stress enough how awesome that promotion is. Something that was missing from a lot of Dragon Gate's guys was their ability to do anything other than sprint matches, but thankfully, experience has been kind to some of their main guys. Dragon Kid was always capable, but Masato Yoshino has brought more to the table to this match than I thought he was going to. The result is a good, but not great, match. It's not something I'd use to introduce people to the promotion. ***1/2

Chris Hero vs. Claudio Castagnoli - CZW Strictly CZW 2006

Weird name for a show. It's also a shit name for a show. These two guys have met many times before with mixed results. They also teamed for a while as Kings of Wrestling, and were good but incredibly over-rated. This match actually happened during their run as a team. This match was just not happening I'm afraid. Both guys seemed to be out of it most of the way. Everything felt too rehearsed and I couldn't get into the match. The stuff they were doing was fine, but it lacked. **1/2

Shingo Takagi, Dragon Kid and Iwasa vs. Don Fuiji, Magnitude Kishiwada and Mochizuki - Dragon Gate 15/02/2009

This is the sort of match which has made Dragon Gate more famous around the world. Multi-man tag matches. I don't know some of the guys in this match so I have no idea what to expect from this. Unfortunately, this isn't exactly the best multi-man that Dragon Gate have ever put together. The heels simply don't have the pace to go with the sprint tag thing, but they decide to give it a bash anyways, and to be fair to them, they gave a not bad shot at keeping the pace, but it fell apart eventually. Again, this isn't the match to introduce yourselves to Dragon Gate. **3/4

Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Shinsuke Nakamura - NJPW 15/02/2009

And on the same night in NJPW, Celtic's dead ball specialist was wrestling in a main event. Okay, it's a different guy, but isn't the name similarity a good wee bit of fun ? Apparently these two guys had an awesome fued, but since I'm not a big fan of NJ, I haven't seen much of it. This is a great introduction to the style that NJ have to offer. It's very much human chess stuff and the pace isn't blistering, but the guys tell a brilliant story. Nakamura has a brilliant natural charisma about him and it makes him an amazing heel. He doesn't even have to do anything bad and the fans hate him. This is a great match. ****1/2

Shinsuke Nakamura and Hiroki Goto vs. Mitsuharu Misawa and Takashi Sugiura - NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 2009

Dome show ! This is a Pro Wrestling NOAH vs. NJPW match, which is a rare breed of match nowadays. They had a really cool series of matches earlier in the decade though and the best matches were usually the cruiser tag matches. Misawa isn't even good for a short tag team match anymore. He's pretty much killing his legacy. He should have packed the whole thing 5 years ago, but hey-ho. This match is pretty poor stuff, with nothing making sense and the guys seemingly thinking that hard hitting = good match all on it's own. *1/2

Kensuke Sasaki vs. Kenta Kobashi - NOAH Destiny 2005

This is heading into memorable territory now. This match is noted for the massive chop fest that happened in the middle of the match. Kenta Kobashi is, without question, the greatest wrestler that's still competing. Watching the chop fest again is good as repeat viewing makes you understand that they didn't just do it for that long to bore us. You can always rely on Kenta Kobashi for an epic match and Sasaki is more than capable of keeping his end of the bargain and what follows is less a wrestling match and more of a war. High drama, amazing match. ****3/4

Minoru vs. Kaz Hayashi - AJPW 2009

One more match for the night. Remember Hayashi as the Yung Dragons ? He always looked the part, but his real talent was shown when he went to AJPW and became one of their top junior wrestlers. Minoru's kicks are vicious. Without kick pads as well. f**k being on the opposite side of the ring from that man. This is some belting junior puro from these guys. Minoru is a submission guy, but he can throw out the big moves and high flying with the best of them. ****1/4

Right, the modified MOTY list.

Jack Swagger vs. Matt Hardy - WWE Royal Rumble ( *** )

Beer Money Inc. vs. LAX - TNA Impact 05/03 ( *** )

Tyler Black vs. Jimmy Jacobs - ROH on HDNet ( *** )

Nakajima vs. KENTA is on Dailymotion and I urge everyone to go and watch it. It's sensational. Make sure it's the 11/02 match though. Their NOAH match might be good too so watch that as well, but the 11/02 match is the match of the year so far in what has been a fantastic year for wrestling.

They still done that, but they had 'issues' getting the tapes over to Europe so they just shot a 'special' with Josh Mathews and Jack Korpela showing old Mania matches.

The Smackdown that'll air in the US tonight, with matches they taped on Monday night and the Axess footage will be shown here tomorrow.

Ah cool, i was wondering why when I turned on Smackdown that they were showing Hogan - Rock. That would be a pretty good Smackdown

I actually missed the third match.

Micken and BT Gunn played out a fun main event. The Suicide Dive of doom that wiped out about 20 fans was hilarious, and Micken slapping a fan was even better. As for the moment of the show, that has to go to Falcon absolutely MURDERING Tricky Dicky Divers with a Tilt-a-Whirl Inverted Piledriver.

I was wondering what I missed ! I was playing pool when I suddenly heard a mental crowd reaction followed by "Holy Shit" chants.

Micken also slapped a fan for calling him a paedo.

Nobody was safe.

Am I the only one who doesn't like

Batista

I just finished watching it there.

I don't like him either, it might freshen things up a little bit over the next few weeks.. But that's about it.

Edit-= Santina coming out to Billy & Chuck's music :)
