fraser_smfc
I just like Glasgow... I've been there so often for Rangers games and Scotland games that I know where everything is etc and I feel comfortable there. Dundee is alien to me, I've only been there once in my life and that was for the Open Day. Aye ok son.
Guest
Anyone go to Edinburgh Napier? Would like to know how good it is. Looks pretty good as the first two years are a broader computing degree then you specialise which sounds ideal.

Abertay has the advantage of name recognition for it's gaming course, Napier doesn't, and it's real standards show them up in any case. If you want to do something like that in edinburgh, look towards HW for computing, it doesn't have the gaming quality but is far superior in terms of it's course content and teaching standards. edited to add: *don't know about the other parts of it's syllabus, the engineering mob are the only ones I have direct experience with. Ta for the advice. It's so confusing when different people say different things, I think I'll just do what I think is best.
Mushroom
Gaming is far too specialised with respect to a generalised computing degree, both in terms of the tools required to write gaming code and in their application. Gaming requires far more involvement at the GUI than most and (in many cases) requires a lot of physics modelling within it's domain as well. Theres one massive problem with wanting to dedicate your life to gaming though Seriously though, if you have an interest in graphic design and user-interaction with graphics, then go for it. But theres a guy I know who went to Abertay to do computer games and he's just the type who sits in front of his xbox live for hours on end. Also be aware that Abertay, while good for computer gaming is terrible for other things, and you will have have to cope with the people that couldn't get into Stirling to do Maths. Also re:Napier, I've not heard a good thing about them. Ever. Edited November 23, 2009 by Mushroom
Guest
Thanks for all the advice again. Almost done my UCAS, I'm definitely going to put Abertay and Glasgow Caley down and I'll decide about the others later.

I did apply through clearing though so I didn't have many choices (I think I had 2)

It is, I never found it so dull - the union isn't great and the friday nights are cheesy as f**k but they were a laugh, granted I drank a good bit of my freshers year away....... xbl
Thanks for all the advice again. Almost done my UCAS, I'm definitely going to put Abertay and Glasgow Caley down and I'll decide about the others later. No matter what you do, go and visit the places before you confirm this. I say this on here every year, but seriously, there is no point going for something with the best course, only to find you hate it. So if you put Abertay down, go and visit it, and give it a chance. Think about the uni, and what the place feels like. Don't be afraid to go to somewhere new and strange, and you might find that your original favourite is a lot shitter than you think. With reference to whether or not computing is classed as a science for admissions purposes - it maybe is, because I've just re-read the prospectus entry for my degree and it asks for two sciences+maths. My Highers were Computing, Maths, Physics, English and History... Evidently you totally misunderstood the question. Maybe thats the problem with the likes of you applied computing lot. You can whip up a nice powerpoint, and hell, you can use Outlook well, but you just arent up to basic comprehension.

That might have been mildly amusing if I hadn't already explained what an Applied Computing degree involved.
