even if the fans had tickets, surely to f**k common sense would make them go "holy f**k there is 500 people waiting to get in there" i'll find another way in or give it a few minutes"

what we have to think is that wednesday had played many MANY home games that season with little or no trouble or crushing at turnstyles, and that the round had hosted 5 semi finals previously that decade after being upraded in 1981 or 1982 (cant mind the exact year)

There's a post earlier on the thread with a fan's memory. He and his mate had tickets, but when the gate opened when they were still waiting to get in, that rendered them pretty much useless.

Well said.

This could have happened to any club due to the poor stadium and the failure of police and stewards.

but it didnt, how many games were played in the 80's in run down shiteholes with half arsed police that thought of you as trouble makers first and fans last

not one disaster like this has happened elsewhere, whats the other factor here

Yes but if you have bothered reading/watching or listening to the media at all today you will read/see/hear that a lot of statements given at the time (164 from the police alone) have been doctored to help support this lie.

Anyway you are obviously trolling with the "grief merchants" quote so just f**k off now.

What? Obviously if they are going to bow to the grief merchants whims they are not going to mention the fact they to blame in any way. :1eye

At the 1981 semi between Spurs and Wolves the SAME tragedy almost ocurred at the SAME part of the ground.

30 odd Spurs fans were injured in an incident scarily similar to the 89 tragedy.

Check it out on you tube, cant post link from my phone but its on Spurs v Wolves 1981

and the reason the exit ate was opened was to relieve the crush happening from fans too impatient to get into the game, and too stupid to not add to the already dangerous problem happening at the turnstyle

what the police did after the game was nothing short of disgraceful, sickening in fact, but there should never have been a reason to open the exit gate at 2.50pm to try and save lives outside the ground

i know that incident, hence why i brought up about the ground being upgraded in 81 or 82, that incident was simply a segregation issue, the 81 incident happened inside the ground and only inside the ground

the catalyst to the hillsborough disaster began outside the ground

The ground was unable to cope with the number of fans outside. The Lepping Lane entrance is quite confined with limited space anyway which would not have helped.

The ground did not even have a valid safety certificate.

That again points to the FA and asks the question why it was chosen as the venue.

Don`t know if anybody else has been watching the debate in the House Of Commons this evening, but it seems the families of the 96 people who tragically died at Hillsborough, might finally be getting some form of justice in the release of the papers relating to the disaster. There`s been a lot of fairly emotional stuff from various MP`s over the course of the evening.

Also full marks to Richard Keys & Andy Gray on Talksport last week, some very emotional interviews from various people involved. I was only 9 at the time, but clearly remember the tannoy at Tannadice(during a reserve game against Rangers) telling us there were major problems, then getting home and watching the news bulletins. I wasn`t really aware at the time as to the details of what went on, but suffice to say I can remember the extent of the tradgedy.

You know all this was covered in Taylor's Final Report, thicko? Taylor's report indicated that Leppings Lane was unsuitable for the task at hand. It had also been remodeled since 1984, being split into more pens. This has been known for years.

Its despicable that some are using hysel to almost justify the death of these 96 inocent people.

Like iv said on here before. At the time of hysel brittish football had a huge problem with holigans. Hysel would of happened if it was chelsea, west ham, cardiff city or anyother club with a hooligan problem due to the non existent segregation. The stadium was nowhere near fit to hold such a game. To pin all the blame of hysel on liverpool fans is very short sighted. Yes a few hundred scouse hooligans were partly to blame but if there was decent segregation it wouldnt of happened. obvious but true.

Im sick of this anti liverpool bandwaggon that seems very popular these days. Most on it are misinformed or refuse to listen to the facts. There is nothing that can be done to change the opinions of these people. They want to hate liverpool, They want them to be scum and wont let fact get in the way.

Liverpool football club and its fans are the same as any other football club and its fans. All clubs attract all kinds of people from all walks of life and liverpool are no different.

I find it bizarre that scottish football fans with no link to that club are full of so much hate tawards them. How about you stop listing to the bullshite made up by twisted p***ks with a hidden agender and go and see for yourself what that club and its fans are like.

Iv been to anfield on many occasions and have never ever had a bad experence. Iv never witnessed these monster fans that are hated so much. The club is warm and welcoming. Unlike some i visit every year up here.

Red dotted by people who are so narrowminded they are incapable of gaining their own opinions and God forbid anyone who thinks differently.

Just because gates were opened doesn't mean you have the right to rush through it. If a cinema fire door was left open you don't have right to skip in and watch a movie for free.

As with a lot of these the cover ups, the main crime is the lie not the opening of the gate, if they told the truth, the focus would be on those who pushed into the stadium.

whats that got to do with sheffield wednesday fans being able to gain entry into the end without bother many many times, while liverpool fans couldnt manage it that day without causing a crush outside the ground

i know the terracing was shite, i know the terracing was split into more pens, that has f**k all to do with the liverpool fans causing a crush OUTSIDE the ground before kick off

quite correct, for some reason a lot of people are forgetting that the disaster in the stadium only happened because of the crush outside the ground

There were not enough turnstiles to cope with a crowd that size which in turn contributed to the crowd build up and crush outside the entrance.

Once the gates were opened the crowd should have been directed to the side pens (two police horses present would have been enough to deal with it according to the taylor report) but instead the fans were greeted with a sign directing them into the already crowded central pens.

Probably because it had been used previously.

Crowd safety at football games was not a particularly high priority in those days.

No pen had a capacity as there was no safety certificate.

Two stands were accessed through Leppings Lane. It was something ridiculously stupid like 25 turnstiles for 25,000 people.
