Have you ever seen Darren Jackson and LaToya Jackson in the same room?

Yes, at the Scottish sportswriters annual circle jerk. I was commissioned by the Sunday Post's pornography editor to cover it. Fortunately, I did get to cover LaToya.

An interesting name, LaToya. I did laugh when I discovered that there's an American artist who goes by the name LaTrina.

The character of Mr Scott in Star Trek was inspired by Archibald McMillan of Knightswood in Glasgow. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry met Mr McMillan, then 76, in 1947 while on a trip to the UK. The grandfather of nine was a boating pond attendant at Bingham's Pond near Gartnavel Hospital and had developed a rudimentary warp drive engine using his Austin 7, a box of fireworks, 20 Senior Service cigarettes and a pair of nylon stockings he'd traded for ration coupons during the war.

For many years Glaswegians could catch glimpse of a cycling giraffe called Dorothy on Glasgow Green where the animal was trained by a local animal trainer.

Dorothy was initially successfully trained to ride a tricycle, later a bicycle, but when she failed to grasp riding a unicycle owner Norrie Zimmermann had the animal put down.

The giraffe's skin was divided between the Rector of the University of Glasgow, the Lord Provost and the minister of Glasgow cathedral to be used to line robes of state, while the skinless corpse was left close the People's Palace for a period, as an act of charity on behalf of the stray dogs of Calton, until the surviving remains were stolen by gypsies in 1963.

Long faced Scots pop star BA Robertson of Bang Bang fame is the half brother of former UN Secretary General Lord George Robertson.

Ah now, Did you know that said George Robertson has the corners of his mouth sewn up as a child to stop him telling lies? His mother told him that if he continued to tell lies, more and more would be sewn up until his gub was completely shut. This is why he has such a wee mooth.

Unfortunately, he became a politician, so the whole lying thing continued
