The fish used obviously, was the skate. Lemon sole used to be used to make fishermen's wellies, but they complained about the smell.

Once the fishermen started washing their feet before putting on the wellies, the problem was solved.

When experimental archaeologists tried out his idea of tying fish to boots to slide over the ice, and found it impractical, the metal skate was born.

The fish obviously shed scales all over the ice, so this had to be swept up, which led to the invention of curling.

Wrong thread for this, but I heard that skate was nailed to a mast on long sea voyages to relieve tensions below deck, and specifically discourage buggery amongst the midshipmen, many of whom came from good families. I presume they were de-fanged first, the fish I mean.

For the fifth year in a row, Montrose harbour has been voted Harbour of the Year (Harbourmasters of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
They beat Arbroath into second place (again) causing much seeth between the feuding Angus hellholes.
The worrying part is how believable this actually is.

It was on this expedition that he came up with the idea of the covered ice rink. Historians found his written notes about a 'building with an ice floor for leisurely skating' many years later. This led to the Border Ice Rink in Kelso being built, with an ice sculpture of Scott on permanent display.
He was also surprised to find out that you can simply freeze your own water rather than collect it from the polar regions.
This is why whisky became known as scott and later scotch due to pub landlords making a fool out of him for decades afterwards.
Do you want a scott in your whisky?
Other notable scottish inventors were john logie beard who ironically invented the moustache and sir Walter rally who started off road car racing.

And James Watt who invented the hearing aid, and Alexander Wood who drew up a list measuring female desirability (which over the years has been whittled down to just two categories).

Not forgetting the great James Fleming who invented James Bond.

In 1892, Danish inventor Tomas  Porn established his own company Porn Industries specialising in farm equipment.  Today the company is still a market leader mainly thanks to the Porn 2000 combined harvester which is more than a match to its competitors. Recently the company has decided to embrace the modern age and has established a website. Unfortunately although the site has received an enormous number of visits - very few have resulted in any extra business.
