~~~ Posted July 19, 2014 Share Posted July 19, 2014 Just out of interest why is the opening ceremony not being held at Hampden? Probably because it wouldn't help the Hampden surface. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Northsea80 Posted July 19, 2014 Share Posted July 19, 2014 Just out of interest why is the opening ceremony not being held at Hampden? The city council needed a decent cover for the illicit funding of improvements to the surrounding area at Celtic park. This also included an athletes village and two sports facilities in the emirates arena and velodrome that Peter Lawwell already has a set of keys cut for. Why are the rugby sevens at Ibrox and not at scotstoun, home of Glasgow's pro rugby team and the international rugby 7s? Surely not some council plot to tart up Ibrox and gift The Rangers a new pitch for free? Shame there wasn't room across the street from the main stand for a pair of world class sports facilities! Still they do have those fives pitches so at least that's something? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
bennett Posted July 19, 2014 Share Posted July 19, 2014 Probably because it wouldn't help the Hampden surface. I'm sure that the Olympic stadium held the opening ceremony as well as the track and field events. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
stuthejag Posted July 19, 2014 Share Posted July 19, 2014 Celtic get most of the pie with Rangers (Rugby 7's) & Hampden getting a wee slice each. Firhill get's nothing from GCC as usual ! We couldn't even get planning permission to build on the city end of Firhill from GCC. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Northsea80 Posted July 19, 2014 Share Posted July 19, 2014 How do celtic get "most of the pie"? They get the opening ceremony. Hampden has 10 days or so of events taking place and Ibrox 2 days. There are other events at the hydro, emirates arena, velodrome, scotstoun etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
hellbhoy Posted July 19, 2014 Share Posted July 19, 2014 Just out of interest why is the opening ceremony not being held at Hampden? The Hampden main arena has been raised by quite a few metres to fit in the athletic field and Hampden now has less seating because of the raised surface. Because the new athletics field now stands on stilts it is not deemed safe enough to have all the athletes and their staff all on the raised platform at the same time as we see at opening ceremonies. The danger is the raised surface might collapse under the weight and could be embarrassing and humiliating worldwide if such a catastrophe ever happened. It's for safety reasons only. Northsea80 Posted July 20, 2014 Share Posted July 20, 2014 It's at the end of the games. The health of the athletes is immaterial at that point as the medals have all been handed out! What's the problem anyway with it being at Celtic park? Would you be that concerned if it had been at Ibrox? That place is in need of a good scrub and a lick of paint! What happened to the money that was set aside for stadium improvements/tart up? All spent on wifi? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
bennett Posted July 20, 2014 Share Posted July 20, 2014 Money doesn't grow on tree's you know and as far as i can see there is no valid reason for the opening ceremony to be held at a different stadium than the track and field events (Hampden). All very murky.... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Northsea80 Posted July 20, 2014 Share Posted July 20, 2014 It's pretty funny that people think celtic had anything to do with Celtic park being named as venue for the opening ceremony other than saying yes to it. Murky indeed! I wonder what shadowy figure had a hand in Ibrox getting the rugby sevens? A token gesture from Sir Peter Lawwell, lord of the manor of lennoxtown? Crumbs thrown down from the big table and quickly snatched up by the poor relations in Govan. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Loughal Posted July 21, 2014 Share Posted July 21, 2014 This lot has I believe run its course. We are left with the question that will never be answered, Just how much public money have Celtic secured in the build up of the games, improvements that turned a tacky front into the best in Scotland. All costing them not a penny plus what in ground rental? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Northsea80 Posted July 21, 2014 Share Posted July 21, 2014 Rangers are donating Ibrox for free I suppose? How does a glorified drive way change the front from being tacky to the best in Scotland? It's still the same 80s red brick frontage on the main stand. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
