Sacramento Republic 1 Rangers 2: Ally McCoist’s men fight back to secure first win of North American tour

By Dailyrecord.co.uk

LIGHT Blues subs Darren McGregor and Ian Black find the net in California to see off Sacramento as Ibrox side produce much-improved display.

DARREN McGREGOR and Ian Black climbed from the bench to ensure Rangers had a great night out at the Funfair.

The half-time substitutes made clinical contributions to inspire a second-period fightback and secure success over Sacramento Republic.

Having crashed to a dismal 3-1 defeat in the opening match of their North American Tour to Ventura County Fusion last week, boss Ally McCoist demanded improvement in both result and display.

He got it and, although he would have expected his troops to defeat a team from the third-tier of the US game, Rangers looked fitter and more like themselves as they claimed the triumph.

McGregor’s thunderbolt header, his first touch of the game and his first-goal for the club, hauled his team back into the contest before Black won it at the death.

McCoist’s men had the opportunities to win several games, but with the likes of Kris Boyd, Kenny Miller and Lewis Macleod passing them up to let the enthusiastic home team off the hook, it needed the intervention of the subs to swing it by the shows.

It was an enjoyable contest played out in the most pleasant of places.

If the backdrop to the first tour game in Ventura was odd due to the American football pitch markings, this was just plain wild because of the surroundings.

With the California State Fair in full swing, the horse racing was being staged on the adjacent site and a full-blown fairground was rocking beside the stadium.

No sweat if you didn’t have a ticket for Bonney Field, just get on the Big Wheel for a sensational view of the action.

Or the Monorail, as it drifted past regularly taking revellers high along the side of the pitch to the water slides waltzers.

It was hard to grasp. It was like they had dropped Ibrox into the Carnival at the SECC.

Instead of pies and bovril, it was candy floss, popcorn and strawberry lemonade.

In amongst the Light Blue jerseys, and a couple of kids who cheekily wore Celtic and Hibs tops, there were famous TV and film characters dotted around the pitch, in support of the Capes 4 Heroes charity which urged locals to turn up as their favourite superhero to raise awareness for sick children.

The home players all wore capes, the captain pretended to be Superman as referee Alex Del Angel did the toss with a microphone and amusingly announced that Glasgow would kick-off.

McCoist, of course, had no time for playing around in the fun park.

After the loss in Ventura, the players had been warned that, despite being pre-season, the type of performance dished up against Fusion wasn’t acceptable.

McCoist scrapped the back three he had deployed in Ventura to go with a regular four of Ricky Foster, Bilel Mohsni, Marius Zaliukas and Lee Wallace.

Boyd and Miller started in attack and with David Templeton and Lewis Macleod wide of Lee McCulloch and Nicky Law in the middle.

The changes and the warnings had the desired effect, with Rangers much sharper against a better standard of opposition.

With the chances they had, they should have led at the interval after a first period which certainly had a competitive edge.

Tackles thundered in, with Boyd clattered and Templeton also mown down with a tackle that earned home star Chad Bond a booking.

As for the chances, the unlikely sinner before the break was Boyd.

The record goalscorer in SPL history had golden chances to gain his team the advantage.

Firstly, Foster supplied Macleod and the kid’s through pass was a cracker, sending Boyd scampering clear on goal.

However, the hitman took too long to take aim and stopper Steven Evans chased back to make a block.

Boyd then wasted an even better second chance when he failed to divert home a Law cross from bang in front of the target.

If McCoist wanted those openings to fall to anyone, it was Boyd, yet he couldn’t convert.

The team paid for it in stoppage time as they fell behind.

With Foster off with a hamstring pull, Rangers failed to clear a corner and Carlos Martinez curled a 20-yard cracker high past Cammy Bell.

The keeper, who denied Thomas Stewart earlier in the half, had no chance.

The home fans celebrated. No wonder.

The first Republic goal ensured every supporter in Section A of the ground got a free pizza.

Jealous fans in Section E now craved a Rangers yellow card so they could get their prize of a free chicken sandwich out of the local fast-food counter.

Now, as games of Family Fortunes and Jeopardy took place on the pitch at half-time, McCoist was trying to solve his own puzzles.

With Seb Faure already on for the stricken Forster, Black and McGregor took over from Templeton and Mohsni.

Black’s first act was to get the free chicken-sandwich vouchers handed out for a shirt tug.

McGregor first contribution was to bullet in an equaliser.

The centre-back came up for a Macleod corner, presented like every flag-kick, believe it or not, by Chevrolet and rose the height of the Big Wheel to thunder home a header.

It was there for the winning. Dean Shiels replaced Boyd as Law and Miller shot just wide of the target.

Macleod, who impressed in his first 90 minutes since January, also came close, but McCoist’s men didn’t look as though they were going to do it until Black struck.

Miller’s control at the far post was excellent and his centre was touched home by Black to send McCoist’s troops to Canada for matches against Victoria on Monday and Ottawa 48 hours later in high spirits.

RANGERS: Bell, Foster (Faure 42), Moshni (McGregor 46), Zaliukas, Wallace, McCulloch (Hutton 75), Law, Macleod, Templeton (Black 46), Miller, Boyd (Shiels 66).

Entertaining first half against Victoria Highlanders but when Rangers went 4-5-1 for the second half the team were awful and created very few chances to score.

Highlanders are probably the most Scottish team Rangers have ever played. They aren't a Canadian team, they are more like a Scottish team who happen to play in Canada. Bagpipes, highland dancing, a kilted mascot, Scottish stadium announcer, a very Scottish team indeed. And an impressive amount of Rangers fans at the game too, with 2000+ Rangers fans making the visit.

Highlanders got their goal from a defensive error but other than that they were limited to long ball tactics.

Aye, so what actual Scottish teams have bagpipes, highland dancing and a kilted mascot? :unsure2:
