From the FIFA Laws of the Game:
"A tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent must be sanctioned as serious foul play.
Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play."
I don't think there is any debate about it. The challenge from Gomis easily falls within the above and correctly resulted in a red card. And I say this as someone who thinks Collum is a very poor referee.

I think the point some Hearts fans are making is that by that description Rangers should have been down to 7 men last week.

Collum is the same ref who let Artur Boruc away with a yellow card for kicking Craig Dargo about 6 feet in the air, while outside his box, AND stopping a clear goal scoring opportunity.

You do have to wonder sometimes if refs can really be as crap as their inconsistency implies.
