Amsterdam

Agree with the Heineken experience comments, don't even think about it. It's about 17 euros for effectively a shite walk around the place and a cold pint at the end.

On the strip at the district, there's a place that does kebab, absolutely superb. Sure it's just down from the English boozer that's on the corner. I'm shite with names so can't remember it.

Coffeeshop Popeye allegedly sell sprayed Vanilla Kush, I would avoid the place. My personal favourites are Voyagers (near the train station), Utopia  (behind the palace on Dam Square) and Kadinsky (off Damrak) or Paradox (Jordaan) for hash. 1e Hulp is also good but a fair walk from the centre.

+1 for Voyagers. Definitely the best coffeeshop in Amsterdam. They have rooms upstairs too which, whilst basic, are definitely worth the money given the price of digs over there. Four weeks and counting for my next visit to Mokum :thumsup2

You lucky sod! We're going to try and get away for a weekend in October to celebrate 15 years together.

I've never stayed at Voyagers but it's always the first shop I visit. The weed is great and the guys working there are sound.

Amsterdam has some great bars and cafe's 8-) https://flic.kr/s/aHsjpVfaHD

Yes it has. Unfortunately that link is full of bars selling Heineken, Amstel and Grolsch. Much better beers in places like Het Elfde Gebod, In De Wildemann, Café Belgique, Adensnest, Brouwerij T'Ij and the fantastic bottle shop BeirKoning.

In De Wildemann and Cafe' Belgique are both in my photos ;-) (and I think almost every Brown Cafe in my photos sold a variety of specialist beers as I had them all marked out on my map after doing some research ;-) )

My man. Kandinsky loyal.

Does anyone on here have experience of living or working in Amsterdam?

There are few pubs around the ground. Best option is to have a drink in the city centre then get the train out. It's only a 15-20 min journey

Agree with this best to have a drink in town then grab a train or metro, there are a few bars around the ground ( there is a big cafe/restaurant right outside the ArenA, its a round glass building)

Appreciate the reply. Going to be at the Ajax training ground mid afternoon on match day and wanted to see if there are places to drink prior to kick off without going back into city centre.

Coffeeshop en Muziekstudio De Graal on Albert cuypstraat is a utter gem of a place.  Way of the tourist trail so you dont get ripped off.  Best of all is the place lets you pick up guitars and drums etc and just chill and jam.  They have board games and stuff to play and unlike the tourist traps that want you to f**k off after you exhale, they dont care

Heading to Amsterdam in May with the missus for 4 days and looking for somewhere to stay. I've been a few times before with friends, but I expect this trip will be a different affair given the company. She smokes a bit, I don't any more really (but, when in Rome!), so we'll do a bit of the coffee shop thing, and have a walk round the red light district so she can see for herself, but I reckon we'll probably want to do some cultural stuff, eat/drink etc mostly.

There's a (relatively) reasonably priced hotel near Amsterdam RAI that looks the part, but I'm not familiar with the area. Does anyone have any advice on that? @stevieKTID would you be able to help a Killie brother out?

Definitely fancy the Glow mini golf place after reading this thread.

The RAI itself is a conference and events center but on the Scheldestraat there are a few bars and restaurants there's also Knijn bowling alley on the Scheldesplein which I've been to a few times.

It's well connected you can be in Centrum with the metro with 15 minutes or so there's also the tram but that takes a bit longer, you're also only a 15 minutes walk from De Pijp which is a rather cool area.

If you do head towards De Pijp and like a steak check out Loetje on Ferdinand Bolstraat and next door you have a local brewery called Troost.

Brilliant, thanks very much for that mate. The hotel is on the 'other' side of the conference centre I think:

Tommaso Albinonistraat 200, Zuideramstel, Amsterdam

If it's not any rougher than Ayrshire I'm sure we'll be fine...

I hadn't appreciated how much prices have gone through the roof since the last time I was there, but to be fair that was probably 10 or 15 years ago.

Cheers again for your advice.

Amsterdam in general is really safe just back from Glasgow and a day in Ayrshire for the Killie game took the Dutch guys I play football with they loved it despite the score.

I think there's a metro stop really close by, it's crazy flat as you probably remember so is great for walking about and yeah the prices have gone up considerably.

Feel free to fire away at me for more advice if needed 👍

I’ve stayed near RAI before. It’s quite a businessy area from what I saw but it was fine. The metro is about 15 mins while the tram was more like half an hour. The RAI station also has direct trains to Centraal and Schipol as well as some routes to other towns.
