Worst Referee at Junior level

Who is the worst referee currently refereeing at junior level? Watching Larkhall Thistle this season I haven't been impressed with Chris Gentles but after today's game away to Renfrew I think this award has to go the Chris McTiernan.

He sent off Larkhall's Hugh Kelly for a spot of handbags after he had been fouled. The Renfrew player involved in the incident had a kick out at Kelly during this but it went unpunished. It was a very soft sending off in my eyes, a word in the ear of both players and a booking each would've been more than enough. After this things went a bit crazy with the Larkhall players remonstrating with ref obviously something was said and he sent off Larkhall's Mark Canning.

Unfortunately with frustrations boiling over Canning gave the ref a wee push when he showed him the red. The ref then pushed him back and the raced over to the touchline looked for a home side committee member. He proceeded to tell this guy to phone the police because he felt threatened and had been assaulted. Play resumed for a few minutes until it was half time.

During half time I was told that the referee phoned the SJFA for advice and guidance because he didn't know what to do. The 2nd half finally resumed after a 15 minutes delay due to him waiting on a call back from the SJFA. The 2nd half was a non event obviously with 9 v 11 but the police arrived eventually just before the end of the game but left after a few minutes of speaking to some Renfrew committee members obviously realising it was a complete waste of their time.

It was a truly awful performance from the referee that spoiled a perfectly good game that was pretty even and competitive before he intervened. This same referee sent off Hugh Kelly at Vale of Clyde as well after he had called an opposing player a "fucking ride" after he had pulled Hugh's hair so this is the first time we've witnessed this refs ineptitude.

To answer your question: Craig Young, although I think he's been a specialist assistant referee for a while now.

To not answer your question: Canning will likely get a long and deserved ban. The ref may well be in trouble too.

Yeah it is embarrassing and it certainly was today that guy shouldn't be a ref certainly not at this level maybe not even boys fitba

I'm amazed that a player has apparently pushed the ref today at the Renfrew-Larkhall match yet you're focusing on the referee's supposed poor performance.

Incidentally, I've checked my Ardeer records and it appears Chris McTiernan has officiated two of our games, doing a fine job in each.

It all happened because of him and he couldn't handle the game at all leading to this fiasco. What Canning did was inexcusable but what happened before and after it was shocking on the refs part.

Still sounds to me like your blaming McTiernan for Canning pushing him. There's been an incident, Kelly is sent off. Whether rightly or wrongly, "things went a bit crazy", Canning's presumably said something, been sent off then pushed the ref. Can't see how the ref is to blame.

Whoever the c**t that reffed the clydebank shettleston game today. Also reffed the clydebank Arthurlie game. Chubby wee w****r that was absolutely fucking diabolical

Calum Haswell. Not a ref with a great reputation down Ayrshire way!

Well if you had witnessed what I did today I don't think you'd feel any different. Canning is totally in the wrong but it all happened on the back of extremely poor and weak refereeing. Non of it would've happened on another day with another ref so rightly or wrongly he does have to take his share of the blame. Below is a link to a match report giving another view point.

If a player can't behave himself and pushes a referee he had only himself to blame. It's getting a bit tiresome, this constant blaming of a referee whenever a team loses a match or suffers a sending off.

It constantly amazes me that players are allowed to make a number of mistakes in a match but as soon as a referee does the same it's unacceptable.

I suppose you could always do the course, step into the middle and show all these terrible refs how it should be done.

I think a lack of understanding of the rules on the part of everyone involved except the referees is partly to blame. We were down at Kilbirnie a few weeks ago when the linesman flagged for an offside the ref played on and a Ladeside player who ran past the offside player took the ball on and squared it for the player who was originally offside but was then no longer offside to score. We were all going tonto at the game but my son who passed his ref exams last year agreed with the ref and then tried to explain how the phases work. The point was well debated on here at the time and whilst personally I think much of their problems lies with very poor people skills there is no doubt a number of players, officials and supporters, myself included, need to gain a better understanding of the rules.

I agree, the amount of time Shettleston players got kicked and nothing happened about it was a joke!
