Top four

1. Switzerland

2. Iceland

3. Denmark

4. Norway

Don't they know they're better together with larger neighbours running their affairs? What currency do they even use?

They all have their own currency (which the SNP does not want Scotland to have). Only Denmark is in the EU and it's not in the Eurozone. Switzerland, Iceland and Norway are in EFTA (rather than the EU) but are in the Single Market.

And all are independent.

Not true as true independence is impossible inside the EU. Denmark is in the EU so EU law has supremacy over the Danes' national laws.

The other three, as EFTA members, have economic and trade deals, including freedom of movement, that can be terminated by their national Parliaments. So they have democratic control over their economy, laws, courts, borders, agriculture and fisheries etc - unlike the UK and other EU Member States.

The SNP only wants separation from the UK, not real independence. Look at the Irish - are they really independent or just dependent on the EU and its bailouts?

They're really independent, and you're really a UKIP nutter.

So Tony Benn, Michael Foot, Eric Heffer and Bob Crow were all UKIP nutters? Bob Crow's No2EU party stood in the European elections. Labour's 1983 manifesto included a pledge to withdraw from the EU. It's you who is the nutter.

Wtf is this pish?

Too thick to understand basic European constitutional law?

Denmarks currency is pegged to Euro. Remember when the unionists told how disastrous that would be ?

Ireland is a financial basket case, which is why the SNP promptly stopped talking about emulating Ireland as soon as Swinney stepped back down.

Better credit rating.

Better GDP per head.

Fastest growth in the EU.

They do have higher unemployment and higher debt but on almost every other index be it economy, happiness, living standards etc they beat the UK.

The UK is a low wage economy and its only going to get worse.

The first three are spreadsheet figures, largely as a result of Ireland re-inventing itself as a tax-free home for the European accounting units of multinationals. Our living standards and happiness issues are things that we can plausibly address by spending money on them, if we drag English Labour kicking and screaming away from their wee blue pals.

Inequality increased during the last Labour government and I can't see it going any other way than up with this one. If Ireland is a basket case then so is the UK. I'm sure Ireland is actually announcing public spending increases in the next parliament but apparently we're too skint to do it.

How? They have just released tax cuts and spending increases.

outstripping the uk on most factors.

Ireland is doing just fine

The flip side of that is that there's an election coming by early 2016 at the latest and to put it mildly Fine Gael and Labour aren't doing all that well in the opinion polls at the moment. The sensible approach is to do the austerity early on in the term and ease up at the end to get reelected. I'd read more into what is happening in the RoI about 18 months from now.

Yeah? Cause we've got an election next week and no spending increases for at least six years have been announced. Ireland is in a better fiscal position than the UK and has a higher standard of living.
