Fiji v Micronesia at the Pacific Games

Recommended Posts

I don't think it actually counts as an official international as the Federated States of Micronesia aren't members of FIFA or the Oceanian FA.

However, with the Estonian Cup and now this, a bad month for Arbroath.

"Hey lads! Let's enter a team in the Pacific Games this year. It'll be a laugh"

"What if we get humped? We'll be a laughing stock!"

"We're only up against Vanuatu and Fiji for f**k's sake. They're not exactly Barcelona"

"Aye alright then."

After scoring 46 goals last game Vanuatu couldn't manage any this afternoon losing 0-2 to NZ in the Olympic qualifying SF. Fiji beat PNG 3-1 in the other. Final on Sunday. Fiji & PNG are also in the semis of the Pacific Games.

They don't seem to have an U23 team and just put one together for this tournament.

They don't have an active national team either, they're not FIFA or OFC members and seem to have last played at full level in 2003 when they lost 10-0, 7-0, 18-0 & 17-0 at a South Pacific Games.

NZ kicked out of Olympic Qualifying Final for playing an ineligible player. Vanuatu awarded SF 3-0 and meet Fiji in Final later today. The NZ player, Deklan Wynne, was born in South Africa and doesn't meet FIFA eligibility criteria. According to wickedpedia "FIFA statutes require a player who has changed nationality to either be born in the association's territory, have a biological father, mother or grandparents born in the territory, or to have lived in the new country for 5 years after the age of 18. As Deklan is 20, and does not qualify on any of the other conditions, he would not be eligible to play for New Zealand at any level until the age of 23.". Odd that he also represented NZ in the recent Under 20 WC and nobody protested. Although they only made it to the QF. Wouldn't have happened in Charlie Dempsey's day.
