Apologies for Guardian link, couldn't find the Evening Standard one

Wimbledon plan to sell their Kingsmeadow ground in Kingston upon Thames to Chelsea for their acadamy and womens teams in order to move back to the borogh of Merton.

Wombles coming home?

I'd be interested to know what the Kingstonian fans think about this, as Wimbledon moved in to groundshare with them after the Milton Keynes fiasco, before eventually buying the ground outright. They're still sharing Kingsmeadow, as briefly mentioned in the article. Fair enough if they're happy with the financial settlement they're getting from Wimbledon, but it can't feel terribly great to have taken in a fledgling nomad club, only to see them buy your ground and eventually leave you homeless.

Entirely possible that both clubs are happy with this outcome...but I'd be interested to know nonetheless.

Obviously no-one knows what happens in a closed boardroom but AFCWTrust has kept them aware all the way through the process, they more or less have been there rent free in the time AFCW owned it and AFCW upgraded the stadium to L2 criteria,, The Ks can't afford the upkeep so even if AFCW were to gift it to them it would eventually be sold to keep the doors open so they are looking for something smaller that meets their needs better. They only get a few hundred folks at their games.

Hopefully that's the case.

Merton's only about 2 miles away from Kingston, I don't see the big deal to be honest. I went to their game against Barnet a few weeks back, was a bit surreal to see Lyle Taylor absolutely running the show.

They've had a bee in their bonnet about getting a ground back in Merton since the council made it clear they weren't interested in keeping them in the area. Combine that with the various efforts to ship them off elsewhere, and you can understand why it's such an important issue for them.

Got to be honest....much as this will attract hatred....i find the whole afc Wimbledon thing to extraordinarily sanctimonious.....i always look forward to mk dons out achieving them..

No wonder - you don't have a team you support.

Don't Wimbledon always play them in a Pre season friendly with the gate money Kingstonian receive more or less covering the cost of their rent.

If Wimbledon hadn't bought the ground when they did it would probably have houses on it now.

GLA decides to "call-in" Plough Lane plans

Earlier today the Mayor of London announced that the Greater London Authority has decided to “call-in†the planning application for a new stadium in Plough Lane.

We understand that this is because the development is seen as being of strategic importance to the area.

The GLA will now take control of the planning decision, which will probably involve a new consultation and a decision to be made later this year.

AFC Wimbledon Chief Executive Erik Samuelson said: “We are disappointed that the application has not been approved today. We will immediately set about understanding the detailed reasons for the Mayor’s decision. While this is a setback, the story is not over. We have made a very strong case for the application and we will do so again. We remain confident that we will be successful, albeit after some delay to our aspirations.â€

It's not a surprise as the plans involve developing flats on the greyhound stadium's large car park. It's not handy for local tube and rail stations so local residents will be worried about thousands of fans parking cars in their streets.

ETA - the stadium is close to Tooting, the constituency of Sadiq Khan, Labour's candidate for Mayor of London who is just ahead of the Tory candidate in the polls. This issue could turn into a political football (excuse the pun!) over the coming months. AFC Wimbledon are right to be concerned.

It's an absolute travesty that this got initial approval in the first place.

The loss of the last greyhound track with a London postcode is a cultural disaster, especially when Pascal Taggart had (has) proposals to create a a world class greyhound racing venue with a much more benign effect on the local environment.

Galliard Homes have deliberately run the place into the ground over the last decade and I find it amazing that AFC Wimbledon get so much backing when some of their behaviour over the last decade has been so hypocritical - we are the victims yet we'll screw over everyone we can to get what we want.

Link to an article giving a greyhound follower's perspective

The bit which stood out was

"The other eyecatching element is confirmation Galliards is paying AFC £14m for the privilege of building a football stadium for them!"

Probably because most folk don't know anything about it. I certainly don't.
