2016 Scottish Cup Final - Hibernian FC v Rangers

Quite a good blog on how Rangers and their pals in the media managed to deflect blame away from Hibs by their insane rants.

Pals in the media? The media swung straight into over exuberant hibees and big bad sevco mode within minutes, hence why Rangers had to release statements .

Hopefully tomorrow it won't be pissing down at Leith Links/Easter Road.

Singing in the rain m9.

I'm sure the chief will open the blue skies above like he did on Saturday and Sunday though.

The headline is misleading − from the text you can see that he's suggesting that singing 'The Billy Boys' is preferrable to getting involved in unrest on the pitch ... and he's right !

No mate both are unacceptable, that should be his message, could you imagine an English cup final with fans singing racist abuse and a Director saying, oh well ,I rather they sang that than invaded the pitch?!

He'd be hounded out his job.

I've not read the piece and don't know the full context but when faced with deciding whether an offensive song or unrest on the pitch is worse then the unrest 'wins' every time.

Of course the violence is worse, but no one has said otherwise. The issue is that an actual club official at Rangers, rather than outright condemning sectarian singing, has tried to justify it by essentially saying 'Well yes it's wrong but what about this?' which is as good as no condemnation at all. The point is that they're both wrong, you can acknowledge that one is wrong and condemn it unequivocally without comparing it to the severity of the other offence.

The actions of the Hibs fans on the day were worse than the actions of the Rangers fans and anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves, but looking at the responses of the clubs since, we've had Hibs entirely accepting that their fans were in wrong and vowing to work with the authorities to see that those in the wrong are punished. In contrast, Rangers are completely refusing to accept any culpability on the part of their support, not only failing to condemn the violence but explicitly endorsing it. They lied about the SFA and Hibs by saying they haven't condemned violence when they have, and now they're trying to deflect from sectarian singing with whataboutery rather than outright condemnation.

Hibs as a club have responded to the situation in a measured way and conducted themselves with class while Rangers have lashed out at everyone else and refused to accept any responsibility, dragging themselves through the gutter. Ultimately the transgressions of some Hibs supporters on the day were worse and therefore Hibs' punishment will be more severe, but Rangers should really be facing a disrepute charge for their statements after the fact.

Only a few months ago Spiers was hounded by Rangers fans for saying that a certain Rangers Director thought that TBB was a good song.....

Dear Stewart Robertson:

Bigoted chanting has haunted Rangers FC for decades.

Pluck up the courage: condemn it outright. Offer no excuses.
