Much more than just a football club

Broxburn United Sports Club (BUSC) was formed in 2008 as a charitable organisation with the aim of bringing the young people of Broxburn and Uphall into a safe and social sporting structure. This involved combining other local clubs into one entity and in 2010 BUSC opened its new facilities to the community. This fantastic new building includes an eight changing room pavilion, official's rooms, social area, café/bar, physio room and a third generation synthetic pitch. It is available to local primary and secondary schools and other community groups providing a hub for community activity not previously available in the area. A real home for over 700 members which they can use seven days a week and call their own.

BUSC ensure that both the young and older generations of Broxburn and wider communities have a place to come together and learn in a community owned setting. BUSC is unique in the way it operates; it is not all about sport and in fact young people are a major focus for the club. In this respect the clubs helps with their social development, improve their employability, raise their confidence and boost motivation levels and aspirations. By using sport as a tool to engage with these young people the club has become the backbone of the community and is recognised as the main provider for youth activity locally.

Social Impact

BUSC now have 2 full time and 2 part time employees, 8 volunteer trustees/directors, and 70 coaches, many who take on other volunteering roles.

Community impact has been significant, with local police reporting a reduction of 35% in antisocial behaviour. This demonstrates the benefits that a good sports complex can provide for the community. Having a development manager in post has enabled the building of positive relationships with local partners and the community as a whole.

Some of the activities available:

Training: IT, medical and specialised supported training. School, employment centre and holiday program placements.

Walking football for over 60's. This weekly group has had such a fantastic effect on the community that other enterprises have approached to BUSC to observe and replicate the idea.

Education Programme. BUSC have delivered a five-week activity programme delivered to schoolchildren in P3 and covers five topics: Mental Health, Water, Food & Your Body, Oral Health and Physical Activity.

This is what many junior clubs aspire to, including my own. However, correct me if I'm wrong please, but this club is not the sole work of an existing junior football club, indeed Broxburn Athletic are only part of the set-up that is BUSC. The original Broxburn United junior team went out of business in 1932, according to Wikipedia.

However, it is a fine example of what is possible, if your club wishes to go down that route and amalgamate with other sporting clubs in the area.
