League Cup 16/17 Draw

Not getting why this is different to any other cup draw? Games move for tv and do so on less than 4 weeks notice. The League Cup has always had midweek games, they dont need months of notice to sort out.

People are interested because they dont know how its going to work as the league havent made any public announcement on that yet, I get that, but not having held the draw yet is no surprise. There is absolutely no chance they are going to make a draw for next season before this one is finished. The first potential date is the League agm next week if they arent organising a tv draw.

You're spot on that this is par for the course with cups, however as you acknowledge we know next to nothing about the format or how the draw is going to be conducted. Surely that's good reason to expect the draw far in advance with the format being laid out clearly, rather than the usual draw announced two days in advance three weeks or so prior to the first games?

They would have been the 10th and 11th seeded teams, therefore not amongst the top seeds and would have faced one of the eight Premiership teams that occupied the top seeding.

Why would Utd be above Kilmarnock though?

Because United were relegated to be replaced by the champions, Rangers. Kilmarnock were relegated by the playoff team. Falkirk. Rangers finished higher than Falkirk, therefore United would be seeded above Killie.

It will be interesting to see how clubs approach the League Cup with the transfer window open it is an opportunity to try players however trialists aren't allowed in League Cup ties so guess there will be many short term contracts offered although it will restrict player movement as a player can only be registered with two clubs in one season so may lead to more young players being given a chance. Btw as Hibs are in Europe they won't be in the Group stages.

I'm still wondering if they will allow triallists. They have done in the Challenge Cup R1 for a few seasons.

Been told by club officials that there will be no trialists allowed, so essentially every SPFL team will realistically need 15/ 16 players signed who they can field by the 16th of July.

An SPFL contract has to be a minimum of until the start of the next window so you can't do "short term contracts". The minimum contract length in itself is 28 days but anyone signed once the new window opens on June 10th would have to be signed up to 1st January (though they could be signed to 1st January but mutually released much earlier of course).

I will be interested to see what the rules say about trialists given that it has been promoted as an opportunity to replace pre-season friendlies partially. As HJ said, we were allowed a couple of trialists in R1 of the Challenge Cup and with it having moved to a later date, logically, allowing them in the groups of the League Cup would make sense.

Were triallists that played in R1 allowed to play in a latter round for someone else?

No. Playing (getting on the field) as a trialist still cup tied you, even if you were not subsequently signed.

The League hasn't published rules yet so I'll wait and see on that. It's certainly not info that has been sent to clubs generally though of course it's perfectly possible your officials are involved in the process and happen to know.

Well, at least they're giving it a bit of exposure. I'm sure the First Round draw in previous years has been done behind the scenes then appeared on a website at about 11 on a Monday morning to zero fanfare.

They've been streaming live on YouTube for the last two or three years at Hampden/Sponsors Venue in Glasgow area.
