You think Naismith is minded to dispense with a reliable, experienced goalkeeper who just signed a new deal a few months ago, while at the same time sacrificing a slot for an outfield player in the European squad? Unless Gordon himself is desperate for a move I can't see it.
SJFCtheTeamForMe
Not convinced Saints could afford anymore than a small share of his wages as well. Certainly if he's on anything like what Clark allegedly is. Don't see it happening myself.

I think Naismith would see a friend approaching the end of his career wanting as many games as possible, and wouldn't stand in his way and force him to stay without any guarantees over game time.

Does Gordon want to end his career at St Johnstone though? He's 42 this season, at the club he loves, realistically not the future at Hearts anymore but still better than their number 1 and it's likely to be his last season at this sort of level any way. It's not even as if Hearts are stacked in the goalkeeping department. I mean, I just can't see it. Edited July 29 by Ludo*1

FWIW I just checked and you can have B team players in your European squad. Finlay Pollock played B team football for you, and European football, in 22/23. Jamie MacDonald can be in your European squad and play for the B team. Just now, Ludo*1 said: Does Gordon want to end his career at St Johnstone though? And he'll have enough belief in himself than he can displace Zander Clark and if he doesn't - then he should be retiring. I think your only grounds of reality in this is that Levein was Gordon's manager and that's the only tie. I don't even necessarily think he'll want to spend his final season as a starter if it means moving from St Johnstone. Take Adam Legzdins at us for example. Decent pedigree keeper, 37, not long left in the tank, but has now been demoted to 4th choice. He'd be absolutely brilliant for a top end Championship club (or dare I say it - better than a Josh Rae for a season!) but has zero intentions of moving on. Gordon's obviously a much higher calibre of keeper, but the situation is the much less stark for him - at a club he loves, second choice with a very real chance of wrestling the jersey back in his final season would be much preferable to a, with all due respect, a fucking slog of a relegation battle at a club he has zero emotional attachment to IMO. ETA: If you lads sign Gordon, fair fucks to you, a massive coup for you - I just don't think it's currently realistic. His attempts to wrestle number one at Hearts back was last season and he didn't manage it, so would he rather waste another year doing that or go somewhere that's offering guaranteed top flight and the "next step" as a top flight goalkeeping coach?

That's what I thought, but it doesn't change the fact we'd be sacrificing an outfield slot given Gordon and MacDonald are our only club-trained players over 21 (out of 4 slots). We also need to name 3 senior keepers in the A list because I'm sure you need 2 keepers on the bench and we've loaned out Stone and McFarlane who could have got in via the B list. So effectively by letting Gordon go we'd be replacing both him and (e.g.) Jorge Grant with Ryan Fulton.
Insert Amusing Pseudonym
I refuse to believe we'd be mental enough to go into European games with Ryan Fulton as number 2

Gordon leaves you replace him with MacDonald and nothing else changes?
Jamie_B
I think Gordon to Saints is very much wishful thinking, we probably couldn't get a better goalkeeper in at this stage unless we unearth another Mitov out of nowhere, which is obviously the better business model. Hope I'm proved wrong here.

Freeing up an additional spot for an outfield player.

Which is a shame, as I was looking forward to the marquee signing of Gordon, only for him to be immediately injured in training and out for the season while Josh Rae continues to provide prime TikTok content.
LarsGunnar Carlstrands Dog
Really not getting the idea that Craig Gordon would be a good signing. 42 at the end of the year. Had what should have been a career ending injury at his age and since he came back has been unable to replace our former. No.1 who while being a decent goalie isn’t exactly known for being able to keep form over a sustained period of time. Leave hearts with at least a few diddies we don’t need them all!
