Paco
Albania need Ireland/Sweden to fail to win (possible/probable) and an unlikely set of circumstances in Group F... A Hungary win and an Iceland win, leaving Portugal as the 3rd place side on 2 points. They're virtually out. You'd expect Group E to see the other third placers heading out unless Ireland or Sweden really pull something out the bag - then it's Turkey. Iceland & Austria drawing would achieve the same result, with Austria on 2 pts & Iceland finishing 2nd on 3 pts. But yeah, it still needs a lot for Albania to go through. Paco
Iceland & Austria drawing would achieve the same result, with Austria on 2 pts & Iceland finishing 2nd on 3 pts. But yeah, it still needs a lot for Albania to go through. True. Permutations tonight are: Portugal v Hungary Hungary win - eliminates Portugal, Hungary win group. Portugal win - they are through as group winners unless Iceland beat Austria - goes down to GD if so. Hungary to finish 2nd unless Iceland beat Austria. Draw - Portugal through as 2nd or 3rd depending on the other result. Hungary group winners unless Iceland beat Austria by two goals. Iceland v Austria Iceland win - they are through as group winners unless Hungary beat Portugal, Austria out. Austria win - they are through in 2nd place unless Portugal beat Hungary, 3rd place if so. Iceland out. Draw - Iceland through in second unless Portugal beat Hungary, 3rd place if so. Austria out. Southern Ireland v Italy Ireland win - they are through in 3rd unless they win by two more goals than Sweden beat Belgium by. Draw - Ireland out. Italy win - Ireland out. Sweden v Belgium Sweden win - they are through in second unless Ireland beat Italy by two more goals. Draw - Belgium through in second, Sweden out. Belgium win - Belgium through in second, Sweden out. Albania Out unless both Sweden and Ireland fail to win, and Group F 3rd place to have a worse record than 3 points and - 2 GD - only way this can happen is Hungary beating Portugal, and Iceland beating or drawing with Austria. Turkey Through unless one of Ireland or Sweden win, combined with Portugal and Austria both winning. If all of these happen, they could still technically go through if Sweden beat Belgium by four goals, however if Sweden did this Ireland would need to fail to win. jmothecat
I've probably got this wrong but I think Northern Ireland will face France if neither Ireland nor Sweden win tomorrow, or Wales if Ireland do and Sweden lose or draw or Ireland do and Sweden do but only by three goals or fewer, or Ireland don't and Sweden draw or Ireland don't and Sweden win by one, two or three goals. Sweden winning by four or more or both Sweden and Ireland lose then Northern Ireland play France. So Northern Ireland will be hoping their fellow islanders do them a favour. Basically barring a freak result between Sweden and Belgium they will want Belgium to get a draw or a win and Ireland to get a win. Though this isn't the case if Iceland and Hungary win. jmothecat
Portugal through in third. For Northern Ireland this means a Sweden or ROI win will see them play Wales. Assuming Sweden don't win by 4 or more goals.

jmothecat
What needs to happen for Wales to play Turkey? Neither Sweden more Ireland winning, or Sweden winning by at least 4 goals.
Mr Bairn
What needs to happen for Wales to play Turkey? Italy and Belgium both to avoid defeat
Steve McQueen
I'm still not sure how these are allocated to the last 16? Is it alphabetical removing the 2 eliminated & original group?

Bully Wee Villa
Posted this in another thread but I'll stick it here too in case it helps... There are now two possible draws. Turkey will qualify as a third-place team if whoever finishes 3rd in Group F finishes with a worse record than 3 points, 2 goals for and 4 against. If tonight's third-place team betters that, they will progress and Turkey go out. If Turkey go through the draw is: Switzerland v Poland Croatia v Portugal Wales v Turkey Hungary v Runner-Up E Germany v Slovakia Italy v Spain France v Northern Ireland England v Iceland If the third-place team from Group E goes through the draw is: Switzerland v Poland Croatia v Portugal Wales v Northern Ireland Hungary v Runner-Up E Germany v Slovakia Italy v Spain France v 3rd E England v Iceland

jmothecat
So Portugal and Ireland get the last two places. Albania and Turkey the two third placed teams to miss out. Northern Ireland will play Wales.
forameus
Portugal finished bottom of the four didn't they? From a quick glance of the groups, they only qualified by two goals effectively. Dreadful stuff from them.

Dreadful stuff from them. Northern Ireland will be bottom on goals scored. Mind you, at least they won a game unlike Portugal. Infact, Portugal were the only third placed team not to win a game.
