other leagues 16/17

apologies if anyone else has started one,we had one for last season so why not this one.basically, for the other leagues outwith the so-called big ones(la liga etc)that tend to have threads of their own.

had premier sports for the copa America, because I cancelled late I had it till today and so have been catching some of the Belgian league, quite enjoyed it actually and am considering keeping the subscription up-this might at least be competitive through the season, unlike bt sports ligue1,serie a and bundesliga, all of which I expect to be won at a canter by the usual suspects.only thing that's bothering me is that whats live seems to be announced late, dunno if that's down to premier or the league themselves.

Basel effortlessly swotting teams aside over here at the moment. 6 wins in 6 games, 21 goals for and 4 against. Hard to see anyone stopping them.

FC Zurich currently top of the 2nd league, 15 points from 6 games showing their tag as pre season favourites was a fair one. Aarau and Neuchatel sit 2nd and 3rd, 5 and 6 points behind respectively. They play each other tonight, which will be their 6th match.

Montreal Impact v Toronto FC MLS Semi-Final kick-off delayed while they paint new lines for the penalty box as it wasn't wide enough.

Games had everything from dodgy haircuts to 2 fans having a 'scuffle' just before HT. Games been an enjoyable watch too. All Montreal until Toronto finally woke up at 3 down to score 2 quick goals although 2nd really shouldn't of been allowed after a blatant shove from Altidore. Hopefully Seattle vs Colorado a decent game after this.

Only saw part of the 1st half of Seattle game. Not as interesting as the one before but at least both games close for 2nd legs.

Bumping this as I don't seem able to find a French league thread but Toulouse sacked two players [one on loan at the club but sent back to PSG] today for an alleged pellet gun shooting from a car on a passer-by.

Absolutely mental thing to be doing, even for two young players [The sacked Toulouse boy is 20 and the PSG loanee is 19]

Meanwhile in New Zealand Team Wellington beat Minor Premiers Auckland City 2-1 in the Championship Final to take back to back titles. In the semi final they drew 6-6 with Waitakere United but won on penalties. Team Wellington unrelated to A-League side Wellington Phoenix whose reserve side play in the same League. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11830509  http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11825922

Not much change in Switzerland. Basel ran away with the top division and FCZ the second division. Aarau were going well until they conceded a 92nd minute equaliser to FCZ when they met in Aarau, then collapsed after that. Currently sitting 4th, which is about where they should be based on wage spend for the year.

The season in Iceland gets underway on 30/4. Potential opponents for Scottish clubs in 17/18 were decided by the 2016 season results: FH Hafnafjordur will enter the Champions' League at Qualifying Round 2. Three clubs will enter the Europa League Qualifiers at Round 1: Stjarnan, KR and Fjölnir, all from Reykjavik.

In the Faroe Islands the season has been going since the first week in March. Champions Víkingur Gota will go into the Champions' League Qualifiers while KÍ Klaksvik and NSÍ Runavik will be in the Europa League Qualifiers.

Would love it if Aberdeen drew an Icelandic side.  Had a cracking holiday there last year and a few of my mates would be going to the away leg....

A nod of respect to Arka Gdynia for beating Lech Poznan in the Polish cup final. Their first trophy since winning it in 1978. I went to one of their home matches a couple of years ago. A fun and passionate crowd in a modern ground with a top-notch supporters' bar.

Still little change. Basel won the league last weekend, away to Luzern. No one anywhere is surprised that BAsel won the league. FC Zürich haven't yet won the Challenge League title, though it still seems a matter of when rather than if, as they sit 9 points clear with 6 games remaining.

Seems that the Swiss FA share a lot in common with their Scottish counterparts in some areas. 3 teams in the Challenge League(second league here) have been refused the required licenses to play at that level. FC Wohlen, Le Mont and Chiasso will all be relegated regardless of their league placing as their stadiums have been deemed below the required standard. The FA announced the initial decision of the licensing committee early last week and very generously gave the 3 clubs mentioned 24 hours to fix their stadiums or find a suitable alternative...

FC Wil who are currently bottom of the league, will be saved relegation as a result, but will more than likely disappear completely as a result of their wealthy backers pulling out when it was obvious they were not going up this season and the club are now facing bankruptcy. FWIW, they have a rather nice wee stadium and they let us in free a couple of years ago as a gesture of goodwill while the wealthy backers were trying to schmooze everyone in the Swiss game.

So Canada is getting a new Canadian Premier League,

http://www.espnfc.us/canada/story/3122014/plans-for-new-canadian-premier-league-approved

I hope it doesn't end up going the way of the first Canadian Soccer League, The Canadian National Soccer League, The Canadian Professional Soccer League, and the current Canadian Soccer League which all end up being a cesspit of infighting and bad management.  I'm not overly optimistic about this though unless the leadership has the balls to put the various team owners in their place.

Feyenoord could have won the Dutch league at the weekend there but got pumped 3-0 off Excelsior. Means they're a point ahead of Ajax going into the last day of the season but I'd imagine Ajax might be focusing on the Europa League.

Spartak Moscow also won the Russian league for the first time in 16 years.

Feyenoord were away, so they filled De Kuip and broadcast the game. Sare yin

They should see it out this week as their home record has been almost flawless this year and Heracles have nothing to play for. And as you say, Ajax will be coming off the back of an away game in Europe on the Thursday.
