Massive fire at high rise flats in London

Recommended Posts

Paul Nuttall's heroism in running into the blazing tower block to rescue a Muslim family will never be forgotten.

How he got back to the hospital to carry out life saving surgery,  I will never know. Maybe he drove the ambulance.

So soon after playing in the champions league final as well.

I'd imagine they're still trying to figure out how many people were inside the building when it went up. Difficult to do TBH. It's not like people swipe in and out.

I doubt but they've found everybody yet tbf. Deffo 100+ though.

Agreed, but others are expecting media sources to put names and numbers on it. They are damned if if they or don't.

Would you say to a potentially bereaved parent "can't find your kid, so we'll just file him under dead, 'cos he had no chance and we need stats for the next bulletin.

There is no question the death toll is in 3 figures.

Question is why this time the media have gone for the official line of confirmed deaths when they have never been concerned about speculating on people missing in past?

Going back to my point earlier I think people are managing this very carefully as there is  potential for some serious civil disorder.

Couple of quotes from the Met police commander on the BBC website.

Six victims of the Grenfell Tower blaze have been provisionally identified, Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said, but "there is a risk that sadly we may not be able to identify everybody".

Asked about the number of dead, Cdr Cundysaid: "I hope it is not triple figures, but I can't be drawn on the numbers."

Paul Nuttall will figure it out. He was Pythagoras teacher, before he conquered Rome in the battle of El Alamein.

The fire brigade haven't been inside the building yet. All the victims so far must have been jumpers. I still don't believe the story of the kid being caught after being thrown from the 9th floor either.

So when the LFB commissioner said that they have had firefighters all the way up to the 24th floor she was lying?

Well, the news tonight showed a drone they said was assessing the building to see if it was safe to enter, I think. I could be wrong, I honestly having been paying that much attention to the news recently.

They have. The Syrian guy identified was in his flat.

They have been right up to top floor but can't get in flats above first few floors as ceilings/floors not stable.

So why speculate?

I have to say I did wonder about that one too - with a lot of disasters a miraculous escape story seems to do the rounds, like the guy who supposedly rode debris down the collapsing World Trade Center and effectively surfed his way to safety. I guess we want to believe stuff like that happens, but it rarely turns out to be true.

I hope it is true, but if somebody managed to pull off a catch like that I suspect there will be 32 NFL teams trying to find out his name right now so they can sign him as a wide receiver.

Have they actually given out a guesstimate of how many are still missing?

Apparently they don't know as in some cases whole families with no other ties in this country may be dead. They also don't know who was visiting or if folk were out  who haven't checked in etc.

I'm calling bullshit on that at least partly. If it is social housing they will have a rough idea who should be there. Also if it was my house and I had been out somewhere that night I might have thought the Polis or someone would be interested in knowing.

Estimates I have seen are 600 odd folk live there. I assume somebody somewhere is finding out how many are safe.

Given the time of day it happened it really doesn't bare thinking about how many could be dead.

I don't tend to get massively angry about terrorist stuff because whilst it's probably preventable to some extent - the causes are massively complex , exacerbated by mentally ill young men - who if not dead already would be subject to decades in jail.

Stuff like this gets me utterly seething as its wholly preventable and the people who create the conditions that make it happen aren't diposessed, angry, confused or misled. They are incredibly wealthy people, looking to get more wealthy and even know they get caught out with something like this will get away with it.

Very much this.

The repercussions of having major civil unrest while we don't really have a government have probably been heavily emphaised to the media. And in some ways i don't blame them. However, if the number ebbs out from anguished folk or mouthy celebs, or even worse disgruntled firemen/coppers, they'll look even worse. Reckon they're hoping to keep it as is until Monday.

150 is just a ludicrous number, awful. Shameful.
