Sunday 15th August 2021
South Challenge Cup Final (2019-20)
Dunipace 3-1 Broomhill (at Linlithgow)

Highlights were being filmed so no need to describe the action in detail.

Suffice to say that many like myself initially got the 2 teams confused (Broomhill now play in white so Dunipace were in their 2nd kit which happens to be bright yellow & royal blue like BSC Glasgow used)... but this was made the more understandable by the yellow & blues being on top in the way you might have expected from a team playing 2 tiers higher. Except it was the other way around.

Dunipace took an early lead, doubled it around the half-hour, then slightly lost their way in the tie and were drawn back to 2-1 with a well-taken goal not long before HT. However the Denny men were on top again after the interval, and should have gone out of sight after the Alloa outfit were reduced to 10-men. As it was a late counter-attack sealed a commanding 3-1 victory, belying all notion of the contestants respective divisions.

Strong crowd which must've been 450-500 all up - with the overwhelming majority there to support the victors. Credit also to Linlithgow for a well-run event at among the finest grounds in non-league football.

Good luck to both clubs in next season's last season's this season's competition.

Dunipace become the first ex-Junior and the first club from tier 7 - indeed below tier 5 - to lift the South Challenge Cup.

Speaking to some club officials afterwards they were saying "biggest achievement in a generation", "this is why we left the Juniors", "vindicates all the hard work joining the pyramid" etc. It's easy to focus on achievements like licensing but at the end of the day football is about trying to win stuff. Dunipace deservedly won a real biggie today - well done to them.

Hi. Do you know if game was recorded?

Tier 7 faces Tier 5.

Destiny beckons for the men of Dunipace as they seek to join with Annan, Spartans, Stirling Uni, Whitehill, East Kilbride, BSC and Civil Service as winners of the prestigious South Challenge Cup. Good travelling support apparently expected and hopefully many neutrals also make it along to Linlithgow.

Will they be dancing in the streets of Dunipace Denny come Sunday night?

Dunipace is a place.

I'm guessing they won't be too awestruck by coming up to face the mighty Clach then.. :)

Must feel they can fit in the extra games and I would fancy both if get lucky enough with draw to get to later rounds and get some more than decent prize money that they don't get in South Challenge Cup. Will be interesting to see how they do and if East of Scotland fixture secretary doesn't make it awkward for them to take part in Junior Cup. I can see a few more clubs joining if Sauchie or Dunipace get to a quarter or semi final and earn upwards of £30,000-50,000 in total through prize money / gate receipts etc. Then word gets about so other clubs want a piece of that with funding for football clubs and sponsorship getting even harder to come by now the extra few thousand pounds will be most welcome & that will start to turn heads as Round 4-5 or further is very achievable for most East Premier teams if avoid Talbot..and then start to get prize money.

Have they revamped the prize money again? As a run to the Qtrs would bring in £1k and Semis £5k. Leaving a lot of heavy lifting in "gate receipts etc" to get to those kind of numbers.

They have a bye in round 1, no King Cup this season, and an astro pitch with lights - I'm sure they'll be fine. Assume them and Sauchie will be paired on the round 2 date as happened for Third Division clubs.

No doubt clubs would love that money but it's not guaranteed - in another scenario you could get drawn against a club from the North Region - a long trip and lose in the first tie like Beith did last season, or play at home to a low crowd where you have to pay the other club's travel and 15% to the SJFA. More teams just means it becomes more difficult to get that big money...

It's not guaranteed but probably feel worth trying for at least one season to see if sums add up or not for them. Rutherglen, Arthurlie and Yoker have all made the final & a sizeable amount of money from that run in recent years and I would say Dunipace & Sauchie at least around same level if not better.

That has no basis in reality unless they win it, more chance of losing money than actually making any. Also Junior Cup doesn't receive any sort of priority in the EoS so it may disrupt their seasons if trying to fit in extra cup games.  Sauchie probably have a very good chance of winning the Premier next season, and Dunipace can certainly make an impression.

Makes no sense at all.

It obviously makes sense for Dunipace and Sauchie and they want to try it out for at least one season. There is money to be made in the Scottish Junior Cup - I dont think Irvine Meadow have ever lost money in the Junior Cup even when we have went out in early rounds in recent seasons. A few home ties or a good run in Junior Cup can certainly help increase your playing budget.

I was very pro pyramid and thought some in the Juniors were dinosaurs but clearly there are factions and some people can't see both sides  have a clear bias. For some it is just all Junior Cup - bad burn it down- when anything that can help make your club more cash should be looked at. I am sure a number of West clubs would love a wee trip to Dunipace or Sauchie although be a very tough game to get through.

Draw one or two NRJFA clubs you're losing money, that's more likely than progression to the QF.

My opinion is the Junior Cup should be scrapped/gracefully retired, and the assets of the SJFA distributed amongst members clubs which should be a few thousand each.  It's relevance diminishes with every passing season and all it seems to do is cause fixture backlog.

There's a good chance the handful of EoS clubs will have to withdraw anyway due to fixture clashes.

Camelon rejoined last season. Never played a game. There were weather postponements on what would have been the original date and the subsequent squeeze meant no date could be agreed. They were drawn at home against Stonehaven so slight chance of arranging a midweek game to avoid any EoS/SFA commitments.

You're right that clubs might be looking to make money ouf of the SJFA, but the EoS clubs that have participated recently have shown its nothing to do with a cup run.

Don't think that's correct, they got a 1st round bye and in the 2nd round were meant to host Stonehaven on 7th October like everyone else but had to forfeit as they had a league game that day...which ended up being postponed away at K&D!

Only time a Junior Cup tie has managed to be played when up against an EOS fixture is when the opponents are also SJFA members (ie in the Third Division/Conference X), so were sympathetic to the cause and agree to move. This season that will be a problem again for Camelon and one of the three SJFA clubs in the Second Division as odd numbers, assuming they get to the 2nd round.
