SweeperDee
New Album from Arctic Monkeys, 5 years after their most commercially successful and rock-centric album “AM”. Can see why people who loved their first few albums wouldn’t enjoy this straight away, but I can see the evolution quite clearly from “AM”. They can’t keep singing about getting fights in Sheffield when they’re in their 30s, can they?
smpar
Already seen a few folk complaining at the lack of “bangers.”
DigOutYourSoul
I'm just starting it for the second time. I hadn't really known what to expect. On first listen, it's kind of like the Favourite Worst Nightmare > Humbug transition. Totally different sound to AM. I like the little nod to Bowie at the beginning, and think Four out of Five and She looks like fun are good tracks that'll probably be singles. Nowhere near as bad as some people are making out, I think people we're just expecting "AM v2.0" - for which I can't blame them because it's a fantastic album.
sonsism
I really like it and wasn't much of a fan of the last 2 albums apart from a few songs. The title track reminds me a lot of David Bowie - very spacey.
accies1874
It's not really for me; it all felt a bit too samey and monotonous. While I feel that there could be some great lyrics in there, I found them quite hard to make out due to the echoey vocals and occasionally intrusive instruments, which could sometimes make the sound a bit of a mess. I can see it being listened to more as a complete album than individual songs. As I said, it's not for me, but it'll obviously find a massive audience, and I'm sure people who know more about music than me will tell me how wrong I am. It's also good to see that Twitter is reacting in its usual nuanced manner.

I don't think that necessarily means there's not any good songs, however. I've given up trying to gauge anything based on twitter reaction. SweeperDee
Alex Turner is some boy though; he can croon with the best of them, and his song writing is still top-notch. "Cigars out" is the phrase which I think describes the album quite well.

I really don't get the people saying it's an Alex Turner solo album - the band are all over this album.
GrahamJags
Not the biggest Arctic Monkeys fan in the world, but I was really interested to give this a listen, especially considering there have been no previews (other than a couple of live performances in the States this week), and the early reports of a change of direction. It's a decent album. Think it will grow on me with more listens, but I still can't get over the way Alex Turner enunciates on this one. Great vocal, but horrific delivery. Easy to see now why no tracks were released in advance because, as others have correctly pointed out, it's a proper album and is evidently more rewarding when listened to from start to end. Kind of reminds me of a cross between the first Last Shadow Puppets record, and Humbug, but infinitely better (as I'm not a fan of either of them). She Looks Like Fun is fantastic, and is probably my favourite from it on first listen. Will see how it fares after another couple of spins.
killiefan27
Just listened to it for the first time, and found it all a bit samey. It's not bad, and respect that they're doing something different, just didn't really grab me. Took until 'Four Out of Five' before you get anything resembling a chorus. That's not necessarily a problem, but the first few songs all just kind of blended into one for me. That's a first listen though, so it may be that I'll enjoy it more as the weeks go by!
SweeperDee
Wee bit of insight into the creation of the album:
GrahamJags
It actually sounds a lot like Cameron Avery’s record from last year. Just found out he’s supporting them on tour just now, as well.

Just need to look at his solo composition for the film "Submarine".
Gianfranco
I’m not that convinced on first listen, but to be fair I rarely am.
smpar
Sitting across from two bellends in the pub, one of them told his pal it’s “utter shite, don’t listen to it, it’s awful. I got 3 songs in and had to switch it off.” Think I know the issue here, mate.
well fan for life
He's always been a bit intrigued with stars and the moon. Just need to look at his solo composition for the film "Submarine". This album is very sound track like. If you dropped the vocals it would fit that purpose very well.I don’t think the album is terrible, I’m just not particularly in to lounge music.
Francesc Fabregas
I will make no comment on this album until I hear "Savage Henry"'s thoughts on it.
