Dont need to go through the group stages of what? The normal Euro quali route?

If we win tomorrow, we win our nations league group and have a spot set aside for the playoffs.

The "normal" euro quali's then take place with everyone involved, in 2019.

If anyone who won their nations league group finishes in the top 2 of their normal quali group, their place is given to the next best ranked team in their league. The playoffs take place in 2020.

If we top the group we get promoted to Group B.

Germany, Iceland, Croatia and Poland will be in group B next time since they've been relegated from A.

Czech Republic, Sweden, Austria and Wales will also be group B teams as they haven't been promoted or relegated. Finland, Norway and Serbia will be in there as well, having been promoted.

So actually Group B is just waiting on our game tonight to see who will be the final nation. Full line up;

Germany

Iceland

Croatia

Poland

Czech Republic

Sweden

Austria

Wales

Finland

Norway

Serbia

Scotland/Israel

Group C will have some tough teams in it next time.

Slovakia, Turkey, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland have all been relegated.

The teams promoted from D have given us problems in the past; Georgia, Belarus, and Macedonia are all confirmed, and have all beaten Scotland before, especially fucking Georgia. They'll be joined by either Kosovo or Azerbaijan, two teams we've never played.

Group C is not somewhere we want to be next time. Full line up will be;

Slovakia

Turkey

Northern Ireland

Republic of Ireland

Hungary

Greece

Bulgaria

Romania

Montenegro

Kosovo/Azerbaijan

Georgia

Belarus

Macedonia

Albania

Scotland/Israel

We still go through the qualifiers in the normal way, but there is no prize for finishing 3rd. If we finish top 2 in the group we qualify automatically, if we don't we play the playoff we qualified for by winning* our nations league group.

*hopefully.

Got to say the NL has been a real improvement on the old friendlies system, despite the confusion about how it works.

All the other nations, and particularly the bigger ones, finally seem to be 'getting it' now, which helps raise the profile and esteem of the tournament. English pundits were raving about it on Sunday, praising the fact they had a final day decider that could see them qualify for the NL finals or be relegated - and it swung both ways on the day.

Also pleasing to see how 'mixed-up' it will be on the next cycle, with Germany etc in Division B - next to us! It makes me think that if we can do the business vs Israel tonight then we have probably capitalised on the most 'shitey' version of Division C possible (what with the likes of Slovakia, Turkey, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland in there next time).

I can't wait to get an absolute scheme booting in Division B in two years time.  We really haven't had a better chance of qualifying than we do with this current group, but we should be nicely back in Division C for Euro 2024, nae bather.

Serbia aren't guaranteed promotion yet - Romania can still finish ahead of them if they win and Serbia don't.

I'm a tit.  I was counting Serbia's result tonight, completely forgetting that that game was against Lithuania, so they can't pick up any more points.  So yeah, a win for us (and a good win for Israel) will see us top of the pile, and a match with Finland.

If Finland are lined up for the semi, do we know what teams we will potentially face in the final?

Sorry lads and lassies. My understanding ..

If Win group

Play a Semi then a Final all going well

Win final we go straight to 2020 with no furrher qualification required

Listening to radio scotland they seem to be saying the same

The semi-final and final don't happen until March 2020, after the main qualifying.  So we still need to go through the usual campaign regardless.

Right one min radio saying were 3 games away from Qualifying for a major tournament then on same breath saying who we could get. Germany. Poland in the next group. We going into a group or not. Ffs!!!

Every country in UEFA will go into a qualifying group for Euro 2020 regardless of what happens in the Nations League.

If we win tonight (ha!) and then fail to finish in the top two in our qualifying group, we contest the Nations League play-offs in March 2020: two games, win them both we qualify.

If we win tonight (ha!) and do finish top two in our qualifying group (ha!) we qualify, and someone else gets our play-off place.
