It turned out a straightforward 3-0 win for the BU's, with new striker Jim Sinnet continuing his excellent start to the season with a double. Pat Carroll had earlier scored the opener. The tie was held at the home of the Highland League club, Kynoch Park. The BU's cruised to the next round on a 4-0 score line. Jimmy Anderson scored the first, Tom Balanowski grabbed a double and Bernie Godzik hit the other. A Scottish Cup 3rd round trip to Borough Briggs to play Elgin City The first half score of 3-0 to City did not reflect the play fully, with Pittman having a goal chalked off. Half-time subs Kieran Anderson and Nicky Walker were inspired decisions as the brought the BU's right back into things. On the hour Darren Gribben scored the goal of the round. Three goals in 8 minutes. Incredible! As things calmed down, Elgin regained the lead with 20 mins left but the BU's deservedly got the draw when Andy Scott scrambled home the equaliser. 4-4. The anticipation built up on the long journey to Elgin and after a couple of beverages the BU faithful were ready to enter the stadium to see the BU's take on the big boys. I wasn't the only BU fan who was a tad disappointed and surprised when the BU line up become known. It reeked of damage limitation. I hardly recognised the style of play from the BU's in that first half. No neat link up play, wingmen or attacking flair. It was all slow, measured and predictable. Sure we had a couple of half chances but the 3-0 halftime scoreline certainly didn't flatter Elgin. As the players left the park the BU fans were as deflated as the BU players. The Elgin players thought their job was done and were probably looking forward to their nights out. I couldn't even face a pie at halftime...…….. yes I was that scunnered. When the team came out second half though there was a bit more positivity when the appearance of Kieran and Nicky signalled that the team were going with a more attacking formation and perhaps we would see a consolation goal. We all know what happened after that. The BU team clicked, Elgin players suddenly weren't winning their individual battles and wham, bam, thank you mam it was 3-3. Unbelievable Jeff !! It was perhaps inevitable that after the effort put in by the BU's to clawback the 3-0 lead that Elgin would score to make it 4-3 but fear not as the BU's kept battling and the scrambled goal to make it 4-4 was fully deserved and sparked some memorable scenes. He was working for the BBC that day and as the first half wore on, I kept thinking he must have thought I was mad the way I was extolling my team to him. Five of the goals were scored by players who went on to play for Broxburn. Darren Gribben & Chris Donnelly got goals in the first half. Gribben completed his hat-trick by 65 mins and Zander Miller grabbed a brace too. The visitors side featured current BU player Fraser Keast. Bo'ness won 7-1 but the game was affected by the home team losing two players to injury early on. New signing from Clackmannan Hearts, J Hamilton netted four times Goals from Francis O'Hagan, Lowry & the trialist inside-left completed the scoring. Line-up unknown. Early and late goals from Scott Brown guided the BU's through and gave coach Eric Sinclair his first competitive win. The team featured new signing from Linlithgow, Jon Mitchell. The Bu's finished with ten men as Kevin Donnelly picked up a late 2nd yellow card. The first game at the old Victoria Park had ended 1-1 and this match was just as tight. John Martin, Brian Foster and Maltese international Simon Vella had the BU's 3 up at half-time but the real damage was still to come. Martin completed his hat-trick, Scott Murphy bagged a couple and the rout was completed by Kevin Donnelly, Kevin Thomas, Andy Shirra & a Newlands own goal. 11 - 0. This earned the club an away tie with Auchinleck! It was reported that ground and weather conditions made matters difficult. Billy McKeown made the scores even at half-time. They got their answer on 3 mins when Darren Gribben scored and despite equalising on 10 mins, that was the last time Elgin were to remain on level terms. A Will Snowdon header and Darren Gribben put the BU's two up, then Mark Peat saved a penalty. City pulled one back before the break. Gribben had one chalked off before Ross Campbell made it four. Again, Elgin clawed one back. Nicky Walker scored 15 mins from time but Elgin went for it, putting Marvin Andrews up front. He got his reward 3 mins from time and the BU faithful had to endure 5 mins of added time but they made it . 5-4! The BU's cruised to a 7-0 victory with the two David's, Muirhead and Wood scoring the first two. Gordon Herd got himself a hat-trick and Dale Ryan nabbed a couple.
