Silvio Tattiescone
17 hours ago, welshbairn said: Unless they've been seriously decimating Ukrainian troops, the myth of Wagner as a formidable fighting force must be blown by now. Is it 4 months they've been at it in Bakhmut? Wagner were never seen as a formidable fighting force though. They're lightly armed mercenaries used by Russia in places like Libya where they fight in civil wars against poorly armed rebels. When they encounter professional soldiers, they get their arses handed to them - like the Americans did in Syria for example - 40 US troops with air support and artillery were attacked by a force of 500 Wagner mercenaries and Syrian troops. The Yanks slaughtered them. They're thugs and bullies supplemented recently with the dregs from prisons but their leader is playing power politics and is setting himself up as the head of a private army. Worryingly perhaps, they announced the other day that they'd executed 10 of their new recruits who'd refused to fight in Ukraine. So you've got a private company executing Russian citizens without any recourse to legal process. This doesn't end well.
LongTimeLurker
Definitely significant if the Ukrainians are able to start regularly striking this area. Why the bridge to Crimea at Chonhar wasn't destroyed by retreating Ukrainian forces at the start of the conflict remains a mystery:
ICTChris
Reports that Zelensky has made an unannounced visit to Bakhmut, which would be almost unbelievable given that it’s the currently seeing the fiercest fighting on any front.

ICTChris
Anyone remember Dmitry Rogozin? He is a former deputy PM of Russia and when Russia invaded Ukraine he was head of the Russian space agency. He is a controversial figure due to his history of Nazism, being involved with several neo-Nazi groups in the 2000s. Since leaving Roscosmos he has been advising the Russian occupation authorities on, well, on something. Last night in Donetsk he was eating a birthday dinner in a restaurant when it was hit with a missile. According to reports Rogozin has injuries to his head and body. Also injured was Vitaly Khotsenko, Prime Minister of the ‘DPR’. https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-shelling-attack-injures-two-top-pro-russia-officials-donetsk-agencies-2022-12-22/

The collaborating officials in Russian occupied territory are dropping about one a week.

They may be having the Soviet problem of you send people to spy and report and they realize it’s better outside…

LongTimeLurker
Think we would hear about stuff like this if it was happening in Ukrainian-controlled areas: Guess the difference might be that the Ukrainians had 8 years to prepare their version of Operation Gladio.
welshbairn
Ukraine seem to have better control over soldiers giving away their positions on social media, the same could apply to civilians. I just don't think we're hearing the whole story, no numbers on estimated Ukrainian military casualties for example, but with possibly hyped up ones for Russians.

IDK about that, the Ukrainians are publishing pretty low numbers of casualties, but they aren’t being trumpeted by the press much because with press and cellphones all over, anyone who loses a relative can easily spread the word and the press hears about it. The numbers the press hears from both sides about are in roughly the same ballpark, so they don’t squeal about it, they just go for the torture chambers news…which is real, the Russians really stepped on it with golf shoes on in this case.

alta-pete
Astonished to find out my big pal Oleg was such a dud for us. Somehow had hero memories of the big Ukrainian.
