The Big Queen's Park FC Thread

Recommended Posts

The unspoken premise behind a lot of these sombre condemnations of QP on here seems to be that accepting external investment and using it to try and make your club more competitive  is something that's fine and dandy if you've already got a history/expectation of playing in the top two divisions but unforgivably entitled and presumptuous if you don't.

Yes absolutely.

And despite what Arachnophile has also said above, we may as well just hand out badges to those that come in to give us the benefit of their insight. 'I warned everyone about the Glasgow Gretna's unsustainable plans, yet their money-bags owner keeps bankrolling a vanity project with no fans. Know your place Queen's Park!'.

cheers, the choice of opponent made me think there had maybe been a "glamour" game before this one.

Hmm, I think the mixed reception to Lesser Hampden finally being "ready" may have caused them to keep things low key. Let's face it we do not have the capacity for anything vaguely resembling a "glamour game."

That having been said, our first real competitive game there will be 2 weeks tomorrow and it would be nice if the club produced a real (you know printed on paper) programme to mark the occasion. I'm sure most of the fans would buy it and loads of programme collectors too. An opportunity for some additional revenue to help delay the inevitable impending financial disaster.

£5m for Hampden is not a good deal in anyone's books. QP were indeed shafted by the SFA.

Sure, we could have said no to the deal, and died as a club.

The truth of the matter was accept the deal or go out of business. We chose the red pill.

You’re the only club on the country that the governing body has bailed out by buying their stadium. Ask Clydebank, third Lanark, airdrie etc fans if they think it’s fair?!

Loads of other clubs have had to sell their stadium to supermarket chains to stay alive or they would have folded as well.

To wade into the ongoing debate, in what way is the QP model sustainable? Beyond potential future crowd growth, player sales etc. - which every club can say the same about.

You brought 250 fans to Firhill for a local “derby” in the promotion playoffs - which indicates that there isn’t a particularly large latent fan base to tap into. So once the external funding dries up you’ll find your natural level - which is probably mid-table League 1.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t enjoy the ride, just that you should probably at least have some concerns that funding may dry up before certain longer term commitments reach a break point. Which, to be fair, at least some of you seem to.

Sorry I missed all the Scotland games at Kilbowie and Broomfield.

You have plumbed new levels of ignorance with this post.

Oh, and we built Cathkin Park :)

Wasn’t your club’s stadium upkeep paid for by the governing body for decades?

Yet you still feel you are owed something?!

The concern shown by other supporters is quite touching really… probably more concern being shown than if we’d been relegated out of League 2 into the Lowland, which is almost certainly what would have happened if we hadn’t voted to go pro.

Fair to say at that stage most of us thought our natural level would have been league 1…  a fair chunk would have been happy with that and it might well even turn out to be the case.

But if a team was starting from scratch, trying to do something different and put a long term ‘footballing’ plan in place - it would look a lot like this. So yeah, I’m going to enjoy the ride.

Well perhaps you could explain your comment and we could then get a club spokesperson to respond.

you are welcome to your opinion but as a QP fan I don't care what you think!!

Not rattled at all. Lovely.

The land Hampden stands on was valued at £24 million. It's the best bit of business that the SFA have ever done.

As for your "loads", remind us who.  Who has had to sell their ground when it wasn't to fund a new one?

They had a lease on the ground and made loads of money from that arrangement.

The SFA got a significantly better deal out of the Hampden sale than QP. They spent £2.5million. To put that in context, St Mirren’s deal with Tesco was said to be around £15million. Whilst we’re at fault for allowing the conditions to arise that allowed us to lose it on the cheap, let’s not pretend we got a good deal.

"... the plan which saw Queen's Park retain ownership but a new company, The National Stadium plc, being set up to rebuild and operate the stadium using largely Millennium Commission, European, government and Sports Council cash. The dynamic, alias abrasive, chief executive Austin Reilly took charge.

He was a director of Queen's Park FC, who are the principal beneficiaries of all this public largesse, but that was lost on most people. Some £63 million later, at least two-thirds of it public money, Hampden is undoubtedly a magnificent world-class stadium with the finest playing pitch in Europe - but it is still a mess, albeit off the field of play. The simple fact is that it cost more than was in the kitty."
