Lowland League General Discussion

True, and still Caledonian Braves and GFR ended 10th and 12th last season of 18 teams, 9th and 13th the year before, 12th and 7th the year before that again. Certainly not teams used to fighting near the bottom.

There's two clubs left who are clearly not upto it and probably never will be such has been the upturn in quality.

Replace them with a couple from the West such as Pollok/Clydebank/Talbot/Beith and all of a sudden the likes of GFR, Braves and ES are looking at each other to see who's next for the drop.

When it reaches that stage it’s pretty much anyone can go up or down. Great problem to have as a league!

Hi maybe result tonight against League Leaders Hearts B might suggest the demise of Clubs like Caledonian Braves is not as predictable as might seem.

Honestly the influx of Clubs from  East has been a total success,  with Kelty and Bonnyrigg leading the charge.

No doubt this will be replicated in due course by Clubs from the West.

Would be nice if a  tad of respect and humility was shown from our West colleagues,  so far no one has made the transition.  Last to the party being noisy neighbours is not a good look.

Braves were solid in the first half and took their chance when it came along. Hearts equalised just before the break which fairly reflected how the half had gone.  Hearts had the better of the second half as Braves dug in, but missed a few good chances in the last 15 minutes or so.

TBH, outside the bottom two every team has the ability to take points off any other team in the league.

The pyramid belongs equally to all clubs participating in it. The topic of conversation should be how to have all clubs reach their appropriate level as quickly as possible so the Lowland League achieves the highest possible playing standards and spectator interest.

One more permanent relegation spot would be adequate. Then you would normally have two relegated, with a minimum of one, and a maximum of three.

With more West Of Scotland teams licensed, it would likely mean that both East and West champions would get promoted each year, with the South champion losing in the qualification.

The Lowland League is already strong, but Gretna and Edinburgh Uni either need to improve, or get relegated.

Had a wee giggle when I  read this ekok. You've been around long enough to know that respect and humility is in short supply West of the Forth. Read almost any of my 'interactions' with regards to the South Clubs status within the pyramid.

One thing is certain; when a few clubs do come from the West, this part of the forum will be fun.

Another change that should be made is ditching the champions only angle for the playoffs. Top licensed clubs from each feeder league as long as they are top three would be my suggestion on that.

Is that because the West haven’t produced a club yet? 😃

I've been an advocate of this for ages and it mirrors what they used to do in some of the lower leagues in England. The licensed west clubs shouldn't be penalised because an unlicensed club wins the league ahead of them (and could win the league for several years in a row). Same applies to the east although that seems far less likely to happen as more of the clubs are licensed and most of the top ones are.

In what way are they being 'penalised'? It's not a two-tier league: they know what they need to do at the start of the season if they want to be promoted. If they don't finish 1st, they've failed at that task (not that you suspect many clubs in the WoSL have sleepless nights over that).

Somehow I don't think that Beith's Galacticos are going to bring down the entire pyramid system.

League A & B have a top 3 of licenced clubs. League C only has 3rd place who qualify for a promotion opportunity. Why should 4 other clubs be penalised for playing in the wrong league?

Darvel were in the playoffs and lost to Tranent, so not sure what you are talking about. Beyond that, obstacles placed in the way of progression are not healthy for the quality of the Lowland League. If there had been two promotion places available last season as there should have been, an ability to replace Edinburgh University who were way off the required standard with Auchinleck Talbot when Beith ran into bizarre planning permission issues where floodlights were concerned because it wasn't clear who actually owned the land would have resulted in a stronger and more interesting Lowland league in 2023-24.

Agreed with that, but it does go both ways. The Lowland League have consistently shown disrespect to the feeder leagues. The LL's behaviour towards all 3 feeders is disgraceful, yet ekok closes his eyes to that.

I suspect the point was that Darvel didn't make it to the LL. No West club has as yet.

Auchinleck's performance so far this season doesn't say much for their standards.
